High performance liquid chromatography coupled with ultra-violet, diode array detection (HPLC-UV-DAD), was used to study the degradation reactions of ultraviolet (UV) filter hexyl 2-[4-(diethylamino)-2-hydroxybenzoyl]-benzoate (DHHB). Degradation by-products were detected and identified by means of liquid chromatography coupled with diode array detection and mass spectrometry (LC-DAD-MS). Environmentally-relevant characteristics, such as water pH, chlorine levels, water temperature and dissolved organic matter (DOM) concentration, were modulated and studied in order to determine their influence on the degradation reactions.

Pharmaceuticals are invaluable tools for the prevention and treatment of human and animal diseases. Human evolution led to the increase of life expectancy, which promoted the increase of consumption of pharmaceuticals. These compounds are consistently detected in superficial waters, and whilst degradation processes are expected to mitigate their levels, they also induce the formation of potentially harmful by-products.
