Herein, the integration of SnO nanoparticles with two Zn(II) porphyrins─Zn(II) 5,10,15,20-tetraphenylporphyrin (ZnTPP) and its perfluorinated counterpart, Zn(II) 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(pentafluorophenyl)porphyrin (ZnTPPF)─was investigated for the sensing of gaseous acetone at 120 °C, adopting three Zn-porphyrin/SnO weight ratios (1:4, 1:32, and 1:64). For the first time, we were able to provide evidence of the correlation between the materials' conductivity and these nanocomposites' sensing performances, obtaining optimal results with a 1:32 ratio for ZnTPPF/SnO and showcasing a remarkable detection limit of 200 ppb together with a boosted sensing signal with respect to bare SnO. To delve deeper, the combination of experimental data with density functional theory calculations unveiled an electron-donating behavior of both porphyrins when interacting with tin dioxide semiconductor, especially for the nonfluorinated one.

Following some previous work by some of us on the second order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of Zn(II) -tetraphenylporphyrin (ZnP), fullerene, and ferrocene (Fc) diads and triads, in the present research, we explore the NLO response of some new hybrids with two-dimensional graphene nanoplates (GNP) instead of a zero-dimensional fullerene moiety as the acceptor unit. The experimental data, collected by Electric Field Induced Second Harmonic generation (EFISH) technique in CHCl solution with a 1907 nm incident wavelength, combined with Coupled-Perturbed (CP) and Finite Field (FF) Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations, show a strongly enhanced contribution of the cubic electronic term γ(-2ω; ω, ω, 0), due to the extended π-conjugation of the carbonaceous acceptor moiety.

Germline inactivating mutations of the SLC25A1 gene contribute to various human developmental disorders, including combined D/L-2-hydroxyglutaric aciduria (D/L-2HGA), a severe systemic syndrome characterized by the accumulation of both enantiomers of 2-hydroxyglutaric acid (2HG). The mechanisms by which SLC25A1 deficiency leads to this disease and the role of 2HG are unclear and no therapies exist. We now show that mice lacking both Slc25a1 alleles display a spectrum of alterations that resemble human D/L-2HGA.

Study Question: Is the presence of DNA in the blastocoel fluid (BF) of expanded blastocysts, assessed by whole genome amplification (WGA), associated with the clinical outcome at the first transfer?

Summary Answer: At the first transfer, blastocysts with negative BF-WGA have more chance to implant and to develop to term than those with positive BF-WGA results, both in preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidies (PGT-A) cycles (where only euploid blastocysts resulting from the chromosomal analysis of trophectoderm (TE) biopsies were transferred) and in IVF/ICSI conventional cycles.

What Is Known Already: Retrospective studies conducted in patients undergoing PGT-A have shown that the incidence of negative BF-WGA was significantly higher in TE-euploid blastocysts than in TE-aneuploid blastocysts. In addition, after the transfer of TE-euploid blastocysts, the ongoing clinical pregnancy rate was significantly higher in the group with negative BF-WGA compared with those with positive BF-WGA.

The PI3K/AKT and p53 pathways are key regulators of cancer cell survival and death, respectively. Contrary to their generally accepted roles, several lines of evidence, including ours in medulloblastoma, the most common childhood brain cancer, highlight non-canonical functions for both proteins and show a complex context-dependent dynamic behavior in determining cell fate. Interestingly, p53-mediated cell survival and AKT-mediated cell death can dominate in certain conditions, and these interchangeable physiological functions may potentially be manipulated for better clinical outcomes.

Opening the blood brain barrier (BBB) under imaging guidance may be useful for the treatment of many brain disorders. Rapidly applied magnetic fields have the potential to generate electric fields in brain tissue that, if properly timed, may enable safe and effective BBB opening. By tuning magnetic pulses generated by a novel electropermanent magnet (EPM) array, we demonstrate the opening of tight junctions in a BBB model culture in vitro, and show that induced monophasic electrical pulses are more effective than biphasic ones.
