Mitochondrial dynamics is a process that balances fusion and fission events, the latter providing a mechanism for segregating dysfunctional mitochondria. Fission is controlled by the mitochondrial membrane potential (ΔΨm), optic atrophy 1 (OPA1) cleavage, and DRP1 recruitment. It is thought that this process is closely linked to the activity of the mitochondrial respiratory chain (MRC).

The vast number of tree species presents a formidable challenge to understanding these forests, including their response to environmental change, as very little is known about most tropical tree species. A focus on the common species may circumvent this challenge.

We assessed the variability, accuracy, and uncertainty of baselining methods by applying sensitivity and variable importance analysis on a range of typically-used methods and parameters for 2,794 jurisdictions worldwide. The median jurisdiction's deforestation emission baseline varied by 171% (90% range: 87%-440%) of its mean, with a median forecast error of 0.

Here, we highlight the case of a 31-yr-old man who had clinical features of primary hypertrophic osteoarthropathy (PHOAR) and harbored a homozygous variant (c.38C > A, p.Ala13Glu) in the gene, as indicated by whole-exome sequencing (WES).

One such manifestation, which has been described since the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic and is relevant for current neurological practice, is Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS). The literature describes neurotoxic mechanisms of the virus itself and the possible pathways by which it may affect the peripheral nerves in experimental studies; however, we still lack information on the mechanisms causing the immune response that gives rise to GBS in the context of SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Accordingly, we reviewed randomized comparative studies to determine the risks and benefits of VATS lobectomy. Electronic searches on PubMed with standard search terms revealed 97 comparative studies published between 1990 and 2022.

By screening European cohorts of individuals with genetically unsolved inherited optic neuropathies, we identified 61 cases harbouring variants in , among whom 50 carried dominant mutations, emphasizing for the first time the important contribution of monoallelic pathogenic variants to dominant optic atrophy. Analysis of the ophthalmological and clinical data revealed that recessive cases are affected more severely than dominant cases, while not significantly earlier.

Like most biodiversity, dipterocarps are threatened by deforestation and climate change, so it is crucial to understand the potential impacts of these threats on current and future dipterocarp distributions. We developed species distribution models (SDMs) for 19 species of dipterocarps in the Philippines, which were projected onto current and two 2070 representative concentration pathway (RCP) climate scenarios, RCP 4.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFLung cancer (LC) is the leading cause of cancer mortality in the USA; the American Cancer Society (ACS) estimates upwards of 220,000 new cases will be diagnosed this year. Recently, the Center for Medicare/Medicaid Services (CMS) agreed to cover LC screening with low-dose computed tomography (CT) for patients; however, CMS requires prior documentation of a shared decision-making (SDM) visit between the patient and the referring clinician to inform them about risks of screening. LC screening programs have begun to use YouTube for patient recruitment, education, and marketing of screening.

Despite its involvement in lipid remodeling, the function of OPA1 has never been analyzed by whole-cell lipidomics. We used a nontargeted, reversed-phase lipidomics approach, validated for cell cultures, to investigate OPA1-inactivated mouse embryonic fibroblasts ( Opa1 MEFs).

Pathogenic OPA1 variants lead to a large spectrum of disorders associated with visual impairment due to optic nerve neuropathy. The aim of this study was to investigate the metabolomic consequences of complete OPA1 disruption in Opa1 mouse embryonic fibroblasts (MEFs) compared to their Opa1 counterparts.

This study maps distribution and spatial congruence between Above-Ground Biomass (AGB) and species richness of IUCN listed conservation-dependent and endemic avian fauna in Palawan, Philippines. Grey Level Co-Occurrence Texture Matrices (GLCMs) extracted from Landsat and ALOS-PALSAR were used in conjunction with local field data to model and map local-scale field AGB using the Random Forest algorithm (r = 0.92 and RMSE = 31.

Where transitions are underway or anticipated, historical precedent and methods for systematically assessing future trends should be used to anticipate likely threats to forest conservation and design appropriate and prescient policy measures to counteract them. Myanmar is transitioning from an authoritarian, centralized state with a highly regulated economy to a more decentralized and economically liberal democracy and is working to end a long-running civil war.

In most cases, the disease is caused by mutations in OPA1, a gene encoding a mitochondrial large GTPase involved in cristae structure and mitochondrial network fusion. Using exome sequencing, we identified dominant mutations in DNM1L on chromosome 12p11.

In particular, deforestation can result from the complex interplay among the components of a system-actors, institutions, and existing policies-adapting to new opportunities. A dynamic conceptual map of system components is particularly useful for systems in which multiple actors, each with different worldviews and motivations, may be simultaneously trying to alter different facets of the system, unaware of the impacts on other components.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFOptic Atrophy 1 (OPA1) gene mutations cause diseases ranging from isolated dominant optic atrophy (DOA) to various multisystemic disorders. OPA1, a large GTPase belonging to the dynamin family, is involved in mitochondrial network dynamics. The majority of OPA1 mutations encodes truncated forms of the protein and causes DOA through haploinsufficiency, whereas missense OPA1 mutations are predicted to cause disease through deleterious dominant-negative mechanisms.

Introduction: Patients with psoriasis often use botanical therapies as part of their treatment. It is important for clinicians to be aware of the current evidence regarding these agents as they treat patients.
Methods: A systematic literature search was conducted using the PubMed, MEDLINE, and EMBASE database for randomized clinical trials assessing the use of botanical therapeutics for psoriasis.
Aim: Massive digitalization of natural history collections is now leading to a steep accumulation of publicly available species distribution data. However, taxonomic errors and geographical uncertainty of species occurrence records are now acknowledged by the scientific community - putting into question to what extent such data can be used to unveil correct patterns of biodiversity and distribution. We explore this question through quantitative and qualitative analyses of uncleaned versus manually verified datasets of species distribution records across different spatial scales.
