Mathematical modelling for pandemic preparedness in Canada: Learning from COVID-19.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic underlined the need for pandemic planning but also brought into focus the use of mathematical modelling to support public health decisions. The types of models needed (compartment, agent-based, importation) are described. Best practices regarding biological realism (including the need for multidisciplinary expert advisors to modellers), model complexity, consideration of uncertainty and communications to decision-makers and the public are outlined.

Mental Health Expenditure in Canada.

Background: Mental ill-health-illness or conditions related to mental health, including dementia, schizophrenia, mood (affective) disorders, and mental and behaviour disorders due to psychoactive substance and alcohol use - places a significant burden on society in terms of economic, health, and social costs. Focusing on direct health care costs, estimated expenditures on treating mental health conditions accounted for up to 14% of total health expenditures across 12 OECD countries over the period of 2003 to 2010.

Aims Of The Study: The purpose of this study was to estimate the direct health care costs associated with the treatment of mental ill-health in Canada for the year 2019 using currently available guidelines.

Quantifying the economic gains associated with COVID-19 vaccination in the Canadian population: A cost-benefit analysis.

Background: Vaccination has been a key part of Canada's coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic response. Although the clinical benefits of vaccination are clear, an understanding of the population-level benefits of vaccination relative to the programmatic costs is of value. The objective of this article is to quantify the economic impact of COVID-19 vaccination in the Canadian population between December 2020 and March 2022.

COVID-19 Vaccination and Healthcare Demand.

One of the driving concerns during any epidemic is the strain on the healthcare system. As we have seen many times over the globe with the COVID-19 pandemic, hospitals and ICUs can quickly become overwhelmed by cases. While strict periods of public health mitigation have certainly helped decrease incidence and thus healthcare demand, vaccination is the only clear long-term solution.

Hospital and related resource costs associated with antimicrobial-resistant infections in Canada, 2019.

Background: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) occurs when microorganisms become resistant to treatment by standard, or first-line, antibiotic drugs. These infections create an enormous burden on society due to longer hospital stays and increased morbidity and mortality, resulting in increased medical costs and foregone resources. The objective of this paper is to estimate the hospital costs associated with two of the most significant antibiotic-resistant organisms: methicillin-resistant (MRSA) and (), for Canada, for the year 2019, as well as the value of other resource use attributed to the lost production due to disability and premature mortality.

Retailer Compliance as a Predictor of Youth Smoking Participant and Consumption.

Background: Ninety percent of smokers report having their first whole cigarette before the age of 19. Policies, such as youth access laws, are essential to prevent youth from becoming future smokers. In Canada, the Tobacco Act prohibits retailers from furnishing tobacco products to individuals under the age of 18.

The influence of school policies on smoking prevalence among students in grades 5-9, Canada, 2004-2005.

Introduction: School characteristics may account for some of the variation in smoking prevalence among schools. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between characteristics of school tobacco policies and school smoking prevalence. We also examined the relationship between these characteristics and individual smoking status.

Eliciting patients' preferences for cigarette and alcohol cessation: an application of conjoint analysis.

The strength and stability of preferences for quitting cigarettes versus alcohol in a population of dual users undergoing treatment was examined using conjoint analysis. Patients at a Veteran's Administration substance abuse treatment center ranked nine vignettes from most to least preferred at baseline and 4 weeks later. The vignettes, using a full factorial design, described health states associated with three levels of substance use.
