Introduction: Hospital badges have multiple important purposes, but their essential role remains the clear identification of the bearer, including their professional status. The modernisation of medical careers in the National Health Service has changed terminology dramatically, resulting in a plethora of new job titles emerging among both doctors and nurses.

Objective: To determine whether the new or old terminology allowed clearer identification of medical doctors by patients and nurses.

We present the case of a 73-year-old woman who presented with lethargy and a nonproductive cough. Computerised tomography of her abdomen revealed a 38-mm mass in the lower pole of her left kidney. She underwent a partial nephrectomy, with final histopathological analysis confirming the presence of a concomitant oncocytoma and papillary cell carcinoma.

Introduction: We describe a case of spontaneous, non traumatic rupture of a single artificial testis in a patient who had undergone bilateral, staged radical orchidectomy followed by prosthesis insertion. The consequences and radiological appearances of implant rupture are discussed. We believe it is the longest time interval recorded between prosthesis insertion and rupture.

Preliminary metabolic assessment of patients with renal stones includes measurement of urine metabolites. This paper reports on the degree of intra-individual variation in some key urine metabolites. Over 80 medically untreated patients under initial metabolic investigation were audited from whom 24-h urine results were available as three separate urine pairs collected at intervals not less than 1 month apart.
