Breast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has the highest sensitivity for breast cancer detection compared to other breast imaging modalities such as mammography and ultrasound. As a functional modality, it captures the increased angiogenic activity of breast cancer through gadolinium-based contrast enhancement. Normal breast tissue also enhances, albeit in distinct patterns termed background parenchymal enhancement (BPE).

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) has shown promise as an intervention for pain. An unexplored research question is whether the delivery of rTMS prior to pain onset might protect against a future episode of prolonged pain. The present study aimed to determine whether (1) 5 consecutive days of rTMS delivered prior to experimentally induced prolonged jaw pain has a prophylactic effect on future pain intensity and (2) whether these effects were accompanied by increases in corticomotor excitability (CME) and/or sensorimotor peak alpha frequency (PAF).

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to validate a biomarker signature for chronic pain management, using measures called peak alpha frequency (PAF) and corticomotor excitability (CME), in a model induced by nerve growth factor injections in the jaw muscle.
  • - A total of 150 participants experienced pain for up to 4 weeks post-injection, with EEG and TMS used to assess PAF and CME; machine learning models were developed to predict pain sensitivity based on these measures.
  • - The analysis showed that logistic regression was extremely effective, achieving perfect classification in training and strong performance in testing, indicating the PAF/CME biomarker signature has great promise for clinical applications in pain assessment.

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) manipulates the ubiquitin-proteasome system and regulators of Bcl-2 family to enable the persistence of the virus and survival of the host cells through the expression of viral proteins in distinct latency patterns. We postulate that the combination of bortezomib (proteasome inhibitor) and venetoclax (Bcl-2 inhibitor) [bort/venetoclax] will cause synergistic killing of post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder (PTLD) through targeting the pro-survival function of latent viral proteins such as latent membrane protein-1 (LMP-1) and EBV nuclear antigen-3C (EBNA-3C). Bort/venetoclax could synergistically kill spontaneous lymphoblastoid cell lines (sLCLs) derived from patients with PTLD and EBV-associated hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis by inducing DNA damage response, apoptosis and G1-S cell cycle arrest in a ROS-dependent manner.

Purpose: Antibodies to select Epstein-Barr virus proteins can diagnose early-stage nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). We have previously shown that IgA against Epstein-Barr virus nuclear antigen 1 (EBNA1) can predict incident NPC in high- and intermediate-risk cohorts 4 years before diagnosis. Here, we tested EBNA1 variants, with mutants, to define the sequence requirements for an NPC risk assay.

Rapid mapping is a transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) mapping method which can significantly reduce data collection time compared to traditional approaches. However, its validity and reliability has only been established for upper-limb muscles during resting-state activity. Here, we determined the validity and reliability of rapid mapping for non-upper limb muscles that require active contraction during TMS: the masseter and quadriceps muscles.

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) has shown promise as an intervention for pain. An unexplored research question is whether the delivery of rTMS might protect against a future episode of prolonged pain. The present study aimed to determine i) whether 5 consecutive days of rTMS delivered prior to experimentally-induced prolonged jaw pain could reduce future pain intensity and ii) whether any effects of rTMS on pain were mediated by changes in corticomotor excitability (CME) and/or sensorimotor peak alpha frequency (PAF).

Genetic variants in Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) have been strongly associated with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) in South China. However, different results regarding the most significant viral variants, with polymorphisms in EBER2 and BALF2 loci, have been reported in separate studies. In this study, we newly sequenced 100 EBV genomes derived from 61 NPC cases and 39 population controls.

Peak alpha frequency (PAF), the dominant oscillatory frequency within the alpha range (8-12 Hz), is associated with cognitive function and several neurological conditions, including chronic pain. Manipulating PAF could offer valuable insight into the relationship between PAF and various functions and conditions, potentially providing new treatment avenues. This systematic review aimed to comprehensively synthesise effects of non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) on PAF speed.

Unlabelled: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), a cancer that is etiologically associated with the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), is endemic in Southern China and Southeast Asia. The scarcity of representative NPC cell lines owing to the frequent loss of EBV episomes following prolonged propagation and compromised authenticity of previous models underscores the critical need for new EBV-positive NPC models. Herein, we describe the establishment of a new EBV-positive NPC cell line, designated NPC268 from a primary non-keratinizing, differentiated NPC tissue.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) has been used to examine inhibitory and facilitatory circuits during experimental pain and in chronic pain populations. However, current applications of TMS to pain have been restricted to measurements of motor evoked potentials (MEPs) from peripheral muscles. Here, TMS was combined with electroencephalography (EEG) to determine whether experimental pain could induce alterations in cortical inhibitory/facilitatory activity observed in TMS-evoked potentials (TEPs).

Article Synopsis
  • The robust meta-analytical-predictive (rMAP) prior is an effective method for utilizing external data, but it requires pre-defining a mixture coefficient, which can be difficult during study design.
  • The new empirical Bayes robust MAP (EB-rMAP) prior improves upon this by adaptively incorporating external data based on actual study needs while balancing model simplicity and flexibility.
  • Simulation results show that the EB-rMAP prior is effective at handling prior-data conflicts and maintaining statistical power, and it has been successfully tested on data from 10 oncology clinical trials.

Background: Many pain biomarkers fail to move from discovery to clinical application, attributed to poor reliability and an inability to accurately classify at-risk individuals. Preliminary evidence has shown that high pain sensitivity is associated with slow peak alpha frequency (PAF), and depression of corticomotor excitability (CME), potentially due to impairments in ascending sensory and descending motor pathway signalling respectively NEW METHOD: The present study evaluated the reliability of PAF and CME responses during sustained pain. Specifically, we determined whether, over several days of pain, a) PAF remains stable and b) individuals show two stable and distinct CME responses: facilitation and depression.
