Objectives: To evaluate the image quality (IQ) of a spectral photon-counting CT (SPCCT) using filtered back projection (FBP) and hybrid iterative reconstruction (IR) algorithms (iDose), in comparison with a dual-layer CT (DLCT) system, and to choose the best image quality according to the IR level for SPCCT.

Methods: Two phantoms were scanned using a standard lung protocol (120 kVp, 40 mAs) with SPCCT and DLCT systems. Raw data were reconstructed using FBP and 9 iDose levels (i1/i2/i3/i4/i5/i6/i7/i9/i11) for SPCCT and 7 for DLCT (i1/i2/i3/i4/i5/i6/i7).

Purpose: To assess whether virtual non-contrast (VNC) images derived from contrast dual-layer dual-energy computed tomography (DL-DECT) images could replace true non-contrast (TNC) images for aortic intramural hematoma (IMH) diagnosis in acute aortic syndrome (AAS) imaging protocols by performing quantitative as well as qualitative phantom and clinical studies.

Purpose: Spectral CT using a dual layer detector offers the possibility of retrospectively introducing spectral information to conventional CT images. In theory, the dual-layer technology should not come with a dose or image quality penalty for conventional images. Recent articles have advocated the possibility of obtaining Agatston coronary calcium scoring at 100 kVp by using a single adapted elevated calcium threshold. To evaluate the influence of kilovoltage potential protocols on the Agatston score, we acquired successive scans of a calcium scoring phantom at 4 levels of kilovoltage potential (80, 100, 120, and 140 kVp, 55 mAs) and measured semiautomatically the individual and the total Agatston score of 6 inserts (of 5-mm and 3-mm diameter) containing hydroxyapatite at different concentrations (800, 400, 200 mg/cm(3)). Our results showed that Agatston scores obtained at various low-kilovoltage potential protocols can be highly overestimated in some particular cases.
