Background: It has been suggested that bile CEA levels could be a sensitive index for the detection of occult liver metastases (LM) in colorectal cancer (CRC) patients. The aim of this study was to determine the potential value of biliary CEA assay in the early detection of occult LM from CRC.

Methods: From 1995 to 1999 biliary and blood CEA levels were determined in three groups of patients undergoing surgery; Group 1 (n = 35) patients with LM from CRC; Group 2 (n = 154) patients with CRC without LM; Group 3 (n = 23) was the control group.

Objectives: To examine whether urokinase-type plasminogen activator (uPA) and type 1 plasminogen inhibitor (PAI-1), DNA ploidy, and S-phase fraction (SPF) add supplementary prognostic information relative to stage and Fuhrman's grade in renal cell carcinoma.

Methods: A total of 100 patients with primary renal adenocarcinoma treated by nephrectomy were followed up for a median of 42 months. Of the 100 patients, 78 with Stage M0N0-Nx tumors were studied by multivariate analysis.

In this report we present an extension of the pooled analysis of the prognostic impact of urokinase-type plasminogen activator (uPA) and its inhibitor PAI-I in breast cancer patients. We analyzed a different endpoint, metastasis-free survival (MFS). We checked the consistency of the estimates for uPA and PAI-1 for relapse-free survival (RFS) and MFS exploring possible sources of heterogeneity.

Protein tyrosine kinases (PTKs) play a major role in the transduction of intracellular mitogenic signal. PTKs are also involved in the process of cellular transformation. A number of studies have reported increased PTK activities in cytosolic fractions from human breast carcinoma.

Background: Urokinase-type plasminogen activator (uPA) and its inhibitor (PAI-1) play essential roles in tumor invasion and metastasis. High levels of both uPA and PAI-1 are associated with poor prognosis in breast cancer patients. To confirm the prognostic value of uPA and PAI-1 in primary breast cancer, we reanalyzed individual patient data provided by members of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer-Receptor and Biomarker Group (EORTC-RBG).
