Objectives: Describe the current legislation on electronic medical records (EMR) and telehealth in Latin American countries and analyze the treatment of confidentiality and professional secrecy.

Methods: Between March and September 2022, a survey of the regulations in force in 21 Latin American countries was conducted at two levels: the existence of legislation on EMR and telehealth, and the treatment of confidentiality and professional secrecy in EMR and telehealth. A data extraction form was prepared for each country.

Bioethics of somatic gene therapy: what do we know so far?

Objective: To provide a systematic overview of bioethical debate on somatic gene therapy as documented in the scientific literature.

Methods: We performed a systematic review of reasons, following Strech and Sofaer approach, which is a method to systematically identify and classify arguments (reasons) used in the scientific literature. We identified 217 eligible publications retrieved from PubMed, Lilacs, PhilPapers, and Google Scholar.

Accreditation of research ethics committees in Paraguay: An ethical imperative.

In the last decade, Paraguay has made progress in the development of health-related research involving human subjects. This entails the obligation of the State to ensure that research is conducted ethically: protecting the dignity, rights and welfare of the participants, scientific integrity and adherence to international ethical guidelines. Research Ethics Committees are the main instance or resource to guarantee the aforementioned obligation.

Governance frameworks for COVID-19 research ethics review and oversight in Latin America: an exploratory study.

Background: Research has been an essential part of the COVID-19 pandemic response, including in Latin American (LA) countries. However, implementing research in emergency settings poses the challenge of producing valuable knowledge rapidly while upholding research ethical standards. Research ethics committees (RECs) therefore must conduct timely and rigorous ethics reviews and oversight of COVID-19 research.

National Scientific Misconduct Policies in Argentina: Two Definitions of Research Misconduct.

In "An International Study of Research Misconduct Policies", Resnik et al. count Argentina in the list of countries without national research misconduct policies. In this paper, we clarify that Argentina has national policies of research misconduct and present the research misconduct definitions of two official science organisms: the National Scientific and Technical Research Council (CONICET) and the Ethics Committee of the Argentine Ministry of Science (MINCyT).
