Article Synopsis
  • A team of over 180 researchers from more than 40 countries is addressing the issues related to "phantom agents," which are proposed pathogenic agents that are listed without concrete evidence of their existence.
  • These phantom agents, identified only through symptoms and lacking proper isolates or genetic data, create obstacles for trade and plant certification, making effective detection and risk assessment difficult.
  • The researchers recommend removing these agents from regulatory lists and updating standards in line with modern diagnostic methods to facilitate germplasm exchange and support global agriculture.

The use of environmentally friendly materials for industrial applications has increased tremendously in the past decades due to environmental concerns associated with using synthetic materials. The present comparative investigation studied the properties of raw and chemically-treated coconut shell biomass for possible polymeric composite applications. The coconut shell biomass was treated with alkali (NaOH), bleaching and combined NaOH-bleaching solutions and investigated the surface morphology, chemical transformations, and thermal stability.

Vascular access is an essential component of the Patient Life-Plan, Access Needs for patients with end-stage kidney disease requiring kidney replacement therapy with hemodialysis. Central venous catheter use is associated with high morbidity and mortality. As such, arteriovenous access (AVA) is the preferred modality for hemodialysis.

Quarantine and certification programs exist to prevent the entry or spread of harmful pests and pathogens into agricultural systems. Their common objective is to identify pathogen-free source material through the application of validated testing methods for subsequent release for propagation. Tests must be accurate, efficient and cost-effective.

The role of education in abolishing cultural practices that encourage gender inequality needs consistent evaluation for inclusive, responsive policy development and implementation in a dynamic society. Eliminating masculine gender hegemony may result in attainment of international commitments like gender equality and poverty eradication. Reexamining the role of education in reducing gender inequality in patriarchal societies can highlight critical issues needing policy actions for attainment of sustainable development goals.

  • Lily plants, known for their colorful flowers and strong scent, displayed yellow mottling and mosaic symptoms in March 2024 during an outbreak in Hidalgo County, Texas.
  • Despite initial negative tests for potyvirus using commercial diagnostics, further investigations revealed a mechanically transmissible agent was present, as symptoms emerged on test plants inoculated with samples from affected lilies.
  • DNA analysis confirmed the presence of lily mottle virus (LMoV), identified through PCR amplification and sequencing, showing a significant identity match with known sequences of potyvirus.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to investigate outcomes of female patients with Critical Limb Ischemia (CLI) compared to males in the BEST-CLI trial, particularly focusing on disparities in diagnosis and treatment for peripheral artery disease.
  • It analyzed male and female patients undergoing open surgical bypass or endovascular therapy, assessing outcomes like major amputation, reintervention, and all-cause death, using data from cohorts 1 and 2 of the trial.
  • Results showed that females constituted only 28% of the cohort and had different clinical presentations than males, with females experiencing higher instances of rest pain and fewer adequate vein options for surgical bypass, leading to significant differences in outcomes at one year.

There has been a growing concern on the health effect of edible plants growing near/on/within the vicinity of dumpsites. This study investigated two edible vegetables: Amarathus hybridus and Talinum triangulare (Jacq) grown in the vicinity of a major informal dumpsite of electronic waste in Nigeria. The levels of polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and heavy metal concentrations in the vegetables were measured.

Background: Optimal medical therapy (OMT) for peripheral artery disease (PAD) is associated with decreased major amputation and mortality. OMT has several components, including antiplatelet and high-intensity statin therapy, blood pressure control, etc. While there are disparities in receipt of OMT among PAD patients, it is unknown if patients from disadvantaged neighborhoods, measured by the area deprivation index (ADI), are less likely to be on OMT.

One in seven adults in the United States has chronic kidney disease (CKD) and individuals with the most severe form, end stage kidney disease (ESKD), may require renal replacement therapy with hemodialysis. Despite well-established guidelines indicating that arteriovenous access is the preferred type of vascular access for hemodialysis, in 2021, 85.4% of patients initiated dialysis with a CVC.

Background: Haematological abnormalities are common among tuberculosis patients but there is dearth of information on their value as prognostic markers in Multidrug resistant tuberculosis patients. This study examined the association between complete blood count variables and drug resistant tuberculosis.

Materials And Methods: Nighty (90) consenting adults comprising 30 Drug Resistant Tuberculosis patients (DR-TB), 30 Drug susceptible tuberculosis patients (DS-TB) and 30 healthy participants were recruited in this study.

Background: Sachet water is the most common form of portable water commercially available in Nigeria.

Methodology: Using the murine sperm count and sperm abnormality assay, the germ cell toxicity of five common commercially available sachet waters in Nigeria was assessed in this study. The levels of hormones such as Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH), Luteinizing Hormone (LH) and Total Testosterone (TT); and activities of catalase (CAT), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) were evaluated.

Article Synopsis
  • In November 2019, leaf samples from 'Rio Red' grapefruit trees in Texas showing citrus leprosis-like symptoms were sent for pathogen identification, but initial high-throughput sequencing (HTS) failed to detect any virus-like agents.
  • Advanced bioinformatics tools were later used to analyze archived HTS data, revealing significant portions of the nectarine marafivirus M (NeVM) genome and a few contigs related to other virus families, indicating a potential link to the observed symptoms.
  • In September 2023, similar chlorotic blotch symptoms were observed in adjacent grapefruit blocks, leading to further testing where a significant percentage (81.25%) of the grapefruit plants tested positive for NeVM, confirming the association between

  • The study investigates implicit bias among vascular surgeons treating peripheral artery disease (PAD) and its impact on treatment decisions, particularly noting existing disparities in care between Black and White patients.* -
  • Out of 304 surveyed surgeons, 71.6% exhibited a pro-White bias, with many showcasing moderate to strong preferences, while 77.5% acknowledged the existence of bias, though those unaware tended to have stronger biases.* -
  • The results reveal significant variations in bias based on surgeon characteristics such as race/ethnicity and experience, with female surgeons more likely to recognize their biases and the potential effects on their clinical decision-making.*

Background: Studies suggest that ambulation after major lower extremity amputation (LEA) is low and mortality after LEA is high. Successful prosthetic fitting after LEA has a significant quality of life benefit; however, it is unclear if there are benefits in post-LEA mortality. Our objective was to examine a contemporary cohort of patients who underwent LEA and determine if there is an association between fitting for a prosthetic and mortality.

The growth performance and blood indices of medicated and non-medicated broiler chickens have been the subject of this research coupled with a paucity of comparative information on what can actually happen to broiler chickens if not medicated when reared under humid tropical conditions. One hundred unsexed day-old broilers were randomly and equally allotted into two treatment groups of TM (medicated) and TN (non-medicated) in a completely randomized design each treatment with five replicates having ten birds each. The birds were reared on deep litter system for 56 d which was divided into two phases of 28 d each (starter and finisher), during which data were collected with respect to daily feed intake, final body weight, body weight gained (BWG), mortality rate while blood analysis was carried out on 28th and 56th d for starter and finisher phases, respectively.
