Ahmed Glaucoma Valve Implantation in Jordan: Indications and Complications.

Aim: The main indications for Ahmed glaucoma valve (AGV) include neovascular glaucoma, congenital glaucoma, primary open angle glaucoma and patients with failed previous trabeculectomy. This article aims to investigate the complications of AGV in Jordanian glaucoma patients and to justify the main risk factors.

Methods: Retrospectively, we report 87 eyes of 83 patients who underwent AGV implantation for different indications.

Prevalence of SPOP and IDH Gene Mutations in Prostate Cancer in a Jordanian Population.

Speckle-type POZ (SPOP) is described as an essential tumor suppressor factor in gastric cancer, colorectal cancer, and prostate cancer (PCa). SPOP gene mutations were reported in primary human PCa. Isocitrate dehydrogenase-1 (IDH1) oncogene mutations were detected in gliomas, acute myeloid leukemia, some benign and malignant cartilaginous tumors, and only 1% of PCa.

Association of Race or Ethnicity With Extended-Spectrum Beta-Lactamase Production in : A Case Control Study.

Background: There are limited and conflicting data regarding the impact of race or ethnicity on the rate of gram-negative antimicrobial resistance. This study was performed to determine whether there is a difference in extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) infection or colonization in minoritized patients when compared to White patients from a diverse US Midwestern city.

Methods: A case control study was performed, with controls with non-ESBL matched 1:1 to patients with ESBL-producing based on age, sex, and ZIP code.

Unraveling the Challenges: A Compelling Case of Staph Meningitis and Graft Infection in a Bovine Brain Graft Recipient.

Meningitis due to is extremely rare, with an annual incidence of 1-3%. In this report, we present a rare case involving meningitis, an infected graft, and an infected fluid collection with two forms of in a patient who received a bovine brain graft status post-decompression and suboccipital craniectomy with C1 laminectomy and duraplasty for Chiari malformation. The treatment approach included surgical debridement and graft retention, followed by an extended course of antibiotic treatment with oxacillin and rifampin.

The risk of solid organ tumors in patients with chronic kidney disease: A narrative review of literature.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) has been correlated with certain pathological conditions such as cardiovascular diseases and other renal-related dysfunctions. Some other reports suggested an association between CKD and the development of certain solid cancers. Therefore, we aimed to generate this narrative review to present the available literature on the risk of solid cancer development in CKD patient populations.

Non-traumatic Simultaneous Bilateral Femur Neck Fracture in a Young Female Unraveling End-Stage Renal Disease: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Introduction: Spontaneous femur neck fracture is rare, especially when they occur bilaterally. Renal osteodystrophy is among the causes of these fractures that should be kept in mind. We report a case of a young female who presented with bilateral hip pain and was found to have bilateral femur neck fracture due to renal osteodystrophy.

Vitamin B (cobalamin) is a water-soluble molecule required for the proper functioning of metabolism, blood and DNA synthesis, and neurological development. Vitamin B exists in several forms: methylcobalamin (MeCbl), adenosylcobalamin (AdoCbl), hydroxycobalamin (OHCbl), and cyanocobalamin (CNCbl). This study aimed to evaluate the effect of cigarette smoke on the chemical structure of methylcobalamin and hydroxycobalamin forms of vitamin B.

Cardiovascular risk factors among Jordanian patients with rheumatoid arthritis: A cohort study.

Aim: To determine the frequency of risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD) in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in Jordan.

Method: During this study, 158 patients with RA were enlisted from the outpatient rheumatology clinic at King Hussein Hospital of the Jordanian Medical Services, from 1 June 2021, to 31 December 2021. Demographic data and disease duration were recorded.

Pyrazolyl-s-triazine with indole motif as a novel of epidermal growth factor receptor/cyclin-dependent kinase 2 dual inhibitors.

A series of pyrazolyl--triazine compounds with an indole motif was designed, synthesized, and evaluated for anticancer activity targeting dual EGFR and CDK-2 inhibitors. The compounds were tested for cytotoxicity using the MTT assay. Compounds , , and showed promising cytotoxic activity against two cancer cell lines, namely A549, MCF-7, and HDFs (non-cancerous human dermal fibroblasts).

A cross-sectional study of the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on the physical activity of Jordanian population.

Background: Since the declaration of the COVID-19 pandemic on 11th March 2020, the public health recommendations have applied lockdowns and restrictions to limit the spread of the disease. These measures determined outdoor activities and access to many forms of exercise.

Objective: The primary objective of this study was to examine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the physical activity (PA) of the Jordanian population.

Impact of tobacco smoking in association with H2BFWT, PRM1 and PRM2 genes variants on male infertility.

Tobacco's genotoxic components can cause a wide range of gene defects in spermatozoa such as single- or double-strand DNA breaks, cross-links, DNA-adducts, higher frequencies of aneuploidy and chromosomal abnormalities. The aim in this study was to determine the correlation between sperm quality determined by standard parameters, sperm DNA maturity tested by Chromomycin A3 (CMA3) staining, sperm DNA fragmentation tested by TUNEL assay and tobacco smoking in association with the single nucleotides polymorphisms (SNP) of three nuclear protein genes in spermatozoa (H2BFWT, PRM1 and PRM2). In this study, semen samples of 167 male patients were collected and divided into 54 non-smokers and 113 smokers.

Acetic Acid Mediated for One-Pot Synthesis of Novel Pyrazolyl -Triazine Derivatives for the Targeted Therapy of Triple-Negative Breast Tumor Cells (MDA-MB-231) EGFR/PI3K/AKT/mTOR Signaling Cascades.

Here, we described the synthesis of novel pyrazole--triazine derivatives via an easy one-pot procedure for the reaction of β-dicarbonyl compounds (ethylacetoacetate, 5,5-dimethyl-1,3-cyclohexadione or 1,3-cyclohexadionone) with ,-dimethylformamide dimethylacetal, followed by addition of 2-hydrazinyl-4,6-disubstituted--triazine either in ethanol-acetic acid or neat acetic acid to afford a novel pyrazole and pyrazole-fused cycloalkanone systems. The synthetic protocol proved to be efficient, with a shorter reaction time and high chemical yield with broad substrates. The new pyrazolyl--triazine derivatives were tested against the following cell lines: MCF-7 (breast cancer); MDA-MB-231 (triple-negative breast cancer); U-87 MG (glioblastoma); A549 (non-small cell lung cancer); PANC-1 (pancreatic cancer); and human dermal fibroblasts (HDFs).

Robot-Assisted Tubal Reanastomosis after Sterilization: A Choice for Family Planning.

A variety of procedures have been used for family planning. One of these is sterilization surgery, which can be reversed by a tubal reanastomosis. In the present report, we compare Robot-assisted tubal reanastomosis sterilization with other methods of family planning and discuss factors related to the choice of the approach.

Management of Ascites Following Deceased Donor Liver Transplantation: A Case Series.

Background: Persistent ascites after orthotropic liver transplantation has numerous causes and can be challenging to manage. This study aimed to determine the outcomes associated with conservative and endovascular intervention of posttransplant ascites after deceased donor liver transplantation.

Methods: Adult (≥18 y) liver transplant recipients (between 2006 and 2019) who underwent hepatic venous pressure studies to investigate posttransplant ascites were included in this retrospective study.

Emergence of the first XAFS/XRF beamline in the Middle East: providing studies of elements and their atomic/electronic structure in pluridisciplinary research fields.

XAFS/XRF is a general-purpose absorption spectroscopy beamline at the Synchrotron-light for Experimental Science and Applications in the Middle East (SESAME), Jordan. Herein, its optical layout is presented along with its powerful capabilities in collecting absorption and fluorescence spectra within a wide energy range (4.7-30 keV).

Impact of COVID-19 pandemic on the Jordanian eating and nutritional habits.

Since the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, variable measures have been implemented to control the invasion of SARS-CoV-19 worldwide. Some of these measures included lockdowns for several months in some countries. In Jordan, various protocols have been implemented to deal with the epidemic, such as border closures, closures and local protocols for open days until we reach the partial opening in mid-2021.
