Developmental coordination disorder (DCD) is a lifelong neurological disorder impairing the coordination and planning of motor and sensory tasks. Its functional manifestation includes difficulties in various aspects of daily living, making early diagnosis and management essential. This cross-sectional, questionnaire-based study targeted healthcare providers in Saudi Arabia's Eastern Province who work with children under the age of 18.

Article Synopsis
  • Patients with breast cancer often face serious adverse events (AEs) during treatment, particularly while receiving antineoplastic therapy in outpatient settings.
  • A study involving 1168 patients found that 40% experienced at least one serious AE, leading to emergency department visits or treatment adjustments.
  • The most common AEs observed were musculoskeletal and gastrointestinal issues, and taxane-based treatments were linked to the highest incidence of AEs, highlighting a need for strategies to minimize these complications in future research.

This article documents the work conducted in implementing the IAEA non-agreement TC regional RAS6088 project "Strengthening Education and Training Programmes for Medical Physics". Necessary information on the project was collected from the project counterparts via emails for a period of one month, starting from 21st September 2023, and verified at the Final Regional Coordination Meeting in Bangkok, Thailand from 30th October 2023 to 3rd November 2023. Sixty-three participants were trained in 5 Regional Training Courses (RTCs), with 48%, 32% and 20% in radiation therapy, diagnostic radiology, and nuclear medicine, respectively.

In this study, phenol formaldehyde-montmorillonite (PF-MMT) was prepared and used for lead ion (Pb) adsorption. Batch adsorption experiments were conducted to determine the optimal conditions. The calculated adsorption equilibrium () revealed that pseudo-second-order (PSO) and Langmuir isotherm models best fit the experimental data, suggesting chemisorption as the main mechanism.

  • Post-hepatectomy liver failure (PHLF) is a significant risk after liver surgery, linked to the health of the remaining liver tissue and portal hypertension severity.
  • This study examines whether keeping the round ligament (RL) intact during minimally invasive liver surgery (MILS) can lessen portal hypertension and lower the chances of PHLF and ascites in cirrhotic patients.
  • Results show that patients who had their RL preserved had notably lower rates of severe PHLF (7.0% vs. 20.5%) and ascites (5.8% vs. 18.2%) compared to those with the ligament divided, suggesting RL preservation may be beneficial in these surgeries.

  • The study aimed to compare the effectiveness of atorvastatin vs. rosuvastatin in preventing cardiovascular events in patients with existing cardiovascular disease.* -
  • A systematic review and meta-analysis of four studies involving 7,378 patients indicated no significant difference in outcomes like cardiovascular mortality or composite events between the two statins.* -
  • The findings suggest that atorvastatin and rosuvastatin have comparable efficacy in reducing cardiovascular risks, reinforcing their similar roles in secondary prevention strategies.*

This paper introduces a novel approach for detecting the SARS-CoV-2 recombinant spike protein combining a label free electrochemical impedimetric immunosensor with the use of purified chicken IgY antibodies. The sensor employs three electrodes and is functionalized with an anti-S IgY antibody, ELISA and immunoblot assays confirmed the positive response of chicken immunized with SARS-CoV2 S antigen. The developed immunosensor is effective in detecting SARS-CoV-2 in nasopharyngeal clinical samples from suspected cases.

The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy and safety of left atrial appendage closure (LAAC) and direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). This meta-analysis was conducted as per the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) 2020 guidelines. Two investigators performed an online database search on PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus databases from inception to October 31, 2023, without any language or time restrictions.

Background: Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) depletion syndromes (MDDS) are genetically and clinically variable disorders resulting from a reduction in mtDNA content in the cells, tissues, and organ systems, leading to symptoms related to energy deficits. Deficiency of the mitochondrial succinyl-CoA ligase/synthetase enzyme secondary to pathogenic variations in the and genes is a subtype of MDDS that presents with neurological manifestations and a specific biochemical profile.

Methods: This cross-sectional series describes five patients with MDDS secondary to pathogenic variations in the and genes from two tertiary care centers in Canada and India.

Post-coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination encephalitis is rarely reported particularly in the pediatric population. Herein, we report the first case of postvaccination anti-N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) encephalitis in close temporal association with receiving COVID-19 vaccine in a pediatric patient. The patient is a 13-year-old female who received the first dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine and presented with subacute neurological and psychiatric symptoms and eventually confirmed the diagnosis of anti-NMDA autoimmune encephalitis.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on chronic limb-threatening ischemia in diabetic patients, highlighting the need for effective management strategies and introducing a new revascularization index (RI) to predict treatment outcomes.
  • A review of electronic medical records from 187 patients showed a significant major limb amputation rate of 19.3%, with the RI effectively predicting the need for further revascularization and major amputations.
  • The RI proved to be a useful tool for assessing risks; an RI of less than 1.21 indicates a higher likelihood of major amputation, while an RI below 1.3 signals increased risk for secondary revascularization.

Boronic acids/esters have recently emerged in the field of medicinal and pharmaceutical research due to their exceptional oxophilicity, low toxicity, and unique structure. They are known as potent enzyme inhibitors, cancer therapy capture agents, and can mimic certain types of antibodies to fight infections. They have been designed and developed into drugs, and this approach has emerged in the last 20 years.

Minimally invasive liver resection (MILR) is being widely utilized owing to recent advancements in laparoscopic and robot-assisted surgery. There are two main types of liver resection: anatomical (minimally invasive anatomical liver resection (MIALR)) and nonanatomical. MIALR is defined as a minimally invasive liver resection along the respective portal territory.

Objective: COVID-19 has an increased burden on the delivery of services because the measures taken by the governments forced hospitals to cancel most of their elective procedures and led to the shutting down of outpatient clinics. This study aimed to evaluate the impact COVID-19 pandemic on the volume of radiology exams based on patient service locations and imaging modality in the North of Jordan.

Methods: The imaging case volumes that were performed at the King Abdullah University Hospital (KAUH), Jordan, from 1 January 2020 to 8 May 2020, were retrospectively collected and compared to those from 1 January 2019 to 28 May 2019, to determine the impact of the pandemic of COVID-19 on the volume of radiological examinations.

BACKGROUND Most thyroid nodules are fortunately benign; however, up to 15% of thyroid nodules turn out to be malignant. Follicular thyroid cancer is the second most common type of thyroid malignancy, originating from the follicular cells lined by cuboidal epithelium, with a peak incidence between the ages of 40 and 60 years. The feature that differentiates follicular carcinoma from adenoma is the presence of capsular invasion.

The diagnosis of COVID-19 is considered a significant step in the management of the disease that is causing a major worldwide public health challenge from the time of its emergence in December 2019. Since it has been established that SARS-CoV-2 spreads rapidly, timely detection of the positive cases and isolation of such individuals and their contacts helps in containing viral transmission. In this paper, we review the in vitro technology platforms for testing and diagnosing COVID-19 patients: molecular tests, rapid antigen tests, and serology tests.
