Background: Epicutaneo-caval catheters (ECC) are vital in neonatal intensive care units (NICU) in enabling prolonged venous access. Despite their benefits, central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI) pose a potential risk. The ECC removal procedure may contribute to an increased risk of post removal sepsis through biofilm release.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to analyze trends in Antiseizure Medication (ASM) use and the frequency of Psychogenic Non-Epileptic Seizures (PNES) in patients with and without concurrent epileptic seizures.
  • A review of 145 patients indicated that those with just PNES had a higher likelihood of reducing or stopping ASMs compared to those with both PNES and epilepsy, especially noticeable over several years of follow-up.
  • While both groups showed initial reductions in PNES spells, the long-term outcomes revealed fluctuating patterns, with no significant difference in spell frequency reduction between the two groups at the final follow-up point.

Objectives: Although hemispheric surgeries are among the most effective procedures for drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE) in the pediatric population, there is a large variability in seizure outcomes at the group level. A recently developed HOPS score provides individualized estimation of likelihood of seizure freedom to complement clinical judgement. The objective of this study was to develop a freely accessible online calculator that accurately predicts the probability of seizure freedom for any patient at 1-, 2-, and 5-years post-hemispherectomy.

Article Synopsis
  • The study analyzed factors influencing the reduction or discontinuation of anti-seizure medications (ASMs) in patients with psychogenic non-epileptic seizures (PNES) who also had suspected epilepsy (ES).
  • Patients who experienced a reduction in PNES were more likely to stop all ASMs and had a lower incidence of documented generalized seizures compared to those without PNES reduction.
  • Key predictors of PNES reduction included higher education levels, younger age at admission, and the absence of generalized epilepsy, while a greater number of ASMs at admission and the presence of other neurological disorders were linked to ASM reduction.

Article Synopsis
  • - Recent research indicates that patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) face an increased risk of diabetes, but how IBD affects outcomes in diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) patients was previously unclear.
  • - An analysis of data from the National Inpatient Sample Database revealed no significant differences in mortality or major complications between patients with DKA alone and those with both DKA and IBD.
  • - However, the presence of IBD resulted in longer hospital stays and higher healthcare costs for DKA patients, indicating that while it doesn't worsen clinical outcomes, it does lead to increased resource use.

Psychogenic non-epileptic seizures (PNES) are the main differential diagnosis of pharmacorresistant epilepsy. Achieving the certainty in the diagnosis of PNES may be challenging, especially in the 10-22% of cases in which PNES and epilepsy co-exist. This difficulty hampers the management of these patients.

Objectives Numerous previous studies investigated the impact of medical training settings on outcomes of hospitalized patients. However, the impact of teaching hospital status on outcomes of percutaneous paracentesis, to the best of our knowledge, has never been studied before. Methods Hospitalized patients who underwent percutaneous paracentesis were identified from the National Inpatient Sample database from 2016 to 2019 across the United States (US) teaching and non-teaching hospitals.

Objective: To determine whether resveratrol (Res) can correct osteoporosis induced in a rat model of male hypogonadism.

Methods: Thirty-two rats were randomly divided into 4 groups, 8 in each group; 1) a control sham group: underwent a similar surgical procedure for induction of orchiectomy (ORCD) without ligation of any arteries or veins or removal of the testis and epididymis; 2) a control + Res-treated group (Con+Res): underwent sham surgery similar to the control, but was then treated with Res, as described below; 3) an ORCD-induced group: bilateral ORCD surgery as described above, and 4) a ORCD+Res-treated group: bilateral ORCD surgery followed by Res treatment. Res treatment began 4 weeks after ORCD and continued for 12 weeks.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the challenges in diagnosing comorbid epilepsy and psychogenic nonepileptic seizures (PNES), which affect 12-22% of patients with PNES, and aims to identify distinguishing baseline characteristics among different patient groups.
  • After analyzing 271 patients, it was found that those with PNES and definite epilepsy were more likely to have a history of febrile seizures, brain lesions, and developmental disabilities, while patients with PNES-only experienced longer seizures and had more comorbid health issues.
  • Key predictive factors for having both PNES and epilepsy included previous febrile seizures and specific seizure duration, with significant differences in demographics and health history observed between the PNES-only and comorb

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic control measures rely on the accurate and timely diagnosis of infected individuals. Real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) remains the gold-standard method for laboratory diagnosis of the disease. Delayed diagnosis due to challenges that face laboratories performing COVID-19 testing can hinder public health control measures.

In this paper, we review different designs of distributed Raman amplifiers which have been proposed to minimize the signal power profile asymmetry in mid-link optical phase conjugation systems. We demonstrate how the symmetrical signal power profiles along the fiber can be achieved using various distributed Raman amplification techniques in the single-span and more realistic multi-span circumstances. In addition, we show the theoretically predicted results of the Kerr nonlinear product reduction with different Raman techniques in mid-link optical phase conjugator systems, and then in-line/long-haul transmission performance using numerical simulations.
