Incorporating the perspectives of participants and research coordinators on home spirometry into clinical trial design: The example of the OUTREACH study.

Background: We undertook a human-centered design approach to design the OUTREACH study of home spirometry as a CF clinical trial endpoint. We conducted a qualitative needs assessment to elicit the perspectives of people with CF (PwCF) and research coordinators (RCs) about home spirometry in the research setting and co-produced written and video home spirometry instructions in partnership with representatives from these stakeholder groups.

Methods: We conducted 7 focus groups of PwCF (N = 27), caregivers of children with CF (N = 6), or RCs (N = 24) to elicit current experiences, barriers and facilitators of home spirometry across 6 target areas, followed by discussion and prioritization.

Recurrent Cutaneous Squamous Cell Carcinoma with Direct Invasion of the Pleura: A Case Report.

Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) is the second most common skin cancer in the United States, second only to basal cell carcinoma. While majority of patients have a favorable outcome after surgical resection, a subset of patients carry a higher risk of local recurrence, distant metastasis, and mortality. In this article, we present an unusual case of a 54-year-old male who had trunk cSCC at the site of burn wound that recurred after surgical resection and radiotherapy.

Pentraxin-3 in hemodialysis patients: Relationship to comorbidities.

Hemodialysis (HD), despite being the most common treatment modality for endstage renal disease (ESRD), still carries a mortality rate higher than 20-50%/year resulting from various comorbidities. The aim of this study was to measure the plasma level of pentraxin-3 (PTX-3) in patients on maintenance HD and to assess its relationships to comorbidities such as malnutrition and associated comorbid diseases. This case-control study included 50 HD patients, 30 ESRD patients, and 30 healthy controls.

Effect of intrauterine growth pattern on serum visfatin concentrations in full-term infants at birth and at 6 months of life.

Objective: Visfatin is a hormone discovered in fat cells and is directly related to diabetes. We aimed to investigate the relationship between intrauterine growth pattern and serum visfatin concentrations in full-term infants at birth and at 6 months of life.

Methods: Cord blood visfatin concentrations were assessed in 90 full-term neonates enrolled into; Group I: 30 appropriate for gestational age (AGA) neonates to healthy mothers, Group II: 30 intra-uterine growth restricted (IUGR) neonates, 19 were born to mothers with pre-eclampsia, Group III: 30 large for gestational age (LGA) neonates, 16 were infants of diabetic mothers (IDMs).

Central muco epidermoid carcinomas (CMC) are rare tumours, representing about 2 to 3% of all mucoepidermoid carcinomas. Usually affecting the mandible, they appear as uni- or multilocular radiolucent lesions. We report a case of CMC in a 52-year-old Middle Eastern woman who presented with pain, limitation of jaw movement and tingling sensation of the tongue, related to a radiolucent lesion in the angle of the mandible.

Background And Objectives: The epidemiology, clinical characteristics, and natural course of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in Saudi Arabia are still largely unknown. Hence, we decided to conduct a large retrospective, cohort study to determine these features of the disease.

Biomphalaria alexandrina snails play an indispensable role in transmission of schistosomiasis. Infection rates in field populations of snails are routinely determined by cercarial shedding neglecting prepatent snail infections, because of lack of a suitable method for diagnosis. The present study aimed at separation and quantification of oxalic, malic, acetic, pyruvic, and fumaric acids using ion-suppression reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) to test the potentiality of these acids to be used as diagnostic and therapeutic biomarkers.

Fibrolamellar hepatocellular carcinoma: an immunohistochemical comparison with conventional hepatocellular carcinoma.

The fibrolamellar variant of hepatocellular carcinoma (FLC) differs from conventional hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in some clinical and pathological features. The authors investigated possible differences in reactivity between FLCs and HCCs using glypican-3 (GPC3), an oncofetal protein, and survivin, an antiapoptotic protein. They also compared staining of FLC and HCC with antibodies to cytokeratins 7 (CK7) and 19 (CK19) and CD34.

Calcifying nested stromal-epithelial tumors of the liver: a clinicopathologic, immunohistochemical, and molecular genetic study of 9 cases with a long-term follow-up.

There is a rare primary liver tumor that has been reported as "ossifying stromal-epithelial tumor" (3 cases), "desmoplastic nested spindle cell tumor" (4 cases), and "nested stromal-epithelial tumor" (6 cases). Herein we report 9 cases of this tumor, including 3 previously reported, from the files of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology. All tumors were discovered incidentally in patients between 2 and 33 years of age.

Expression of estrogen and progesterone receptors and inhibin-alpha in hepatobiliary cystadenoma: an immunohistochemical study.

To further characterize the immunohistochemical features of hepatobiliary cystadenoma with mesenchymal stroma, a battery of stains was performed on nine typical cases. All nine tumors had been resected from female patients who ranged in age from 30 to 59 years. Freshly cut sections were stained with antibodies to estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR), alpha-smooth muscle actin (SMA), inhibin-alpha, and cytokeratins (CK) 7, 8, 18, and 19.

Focal nodular hyperplasia (FNH) of the liver can be a difficult diagnosis to establish in limited diagnostic samples such as a needle-core tissue biopsy, especially for pathologists with limited experience with the lesion. To characterize the features that can be used to make the diagnosis, we reviewed and analyzed the clinicopathologic features of 100 consecutive cases submitted for consultation in which we were confident of the diagnosis of FNH in needle biopsy material. A diagnosis of FNH was correctly made by the contributing pathologist in 24 of the 100 referred cases.

This study investigates local alterations in T-cell and macrophage subsets that occur in cervical epithelial neoplasia (CIN), in the presence and absence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Ectocervical biopsies from 10 women with CIN who were infected with HIV, and 10 women with CIN but no HIV infection were studied by immunocytochemistry. Significantly increased proportions of activated CD8+ T cells were seen in all CIN biopsies, and these proportions were further increased in the presence of HIV infection.
