Objective: Delayed facial palsy (DFP) is a common and unique complication after resection of vestibular schwannoma (VS). Few studies have focused on the clinical question of whether patients with DFP can be expected to have the same long-term prognosis in terms of facial nerve function as those without DFP based on their facial nerve function immediately postoperatively. This study aimed to clarify the clinical impact of DFP on the long-term functional status of the facial nerve after VS resection.

For example, the roughness of the crystal surface affects the frictional and optical properties of materials such as ice or silica. Theoretical studies on crystal surfaces based on the symmetry principle proposed that the growing surfaces of crystal growth could be classified in the universal class of Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ), but experiments rarely observe KPZ properties.

Pediatric intraparenchymal meningioma in the basal ganglia treated with gross total resection: a case report and review of the literature.

Introduction: Intraparenchymal meningiomas in the basal ganglia are extremely rare, and to the best of our knowledge, only three case reports have been published to date. Owing to concerns regarding major vessels, gross total resection (GTR) is difficult to achieve; therefore, subtotal resection and radiation therapy are often chosen as treatment options. We present a pediatric case with an intraparenchymal meningioma in the left basal ganglia that was successfully treated with GTR.

Generalized crystal-storing histiocytosis with noncirrhotic portal hypertension: an autopsy case report.

Crystal-storing histiocytosis (CSH) is a rare disease associated with the accumulation of histiocytes containing crystalline matter within their cytoplasm. Herein, we present the case of a female patient who was diagnosed with Tolosa-Hunt syndrome at 45 years of age and idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis when she was 48 years. She developed portal hypertension (PH), but did not present with cirrhosis; as such, the cause of PH was not identified.

Calibrating Hepatitis E Virus Serological Assays Using Asymptomatic Specimens Obtained in Japan.

This study aimed to calibrate hepatitis E virus (HEV) serological assays. We optimized the previously developed in-house HEV antibody enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) by setting the cutoff with an in-house serological performance panel consisting of broad HEV antibody titers and subtracting nonspecific background values for anti-HEV IgM, IgA, and IgG. We also compared the assay's performance with that of commercial serological assay kits (four kits for IgM, one for IgA, and two for IgG).

Remitting Seronegative Symmetrical Synovitis with Pitting Edema (RS3PE) Syndrome Precedes the Development of Hepatocellular Carcinoma.

Remitting seronegative symmetrical synovitis with pitting edema (RS3PE) syndrome is characterized by bilateral synovitis and marked pitting edema of the hands and/or feet. Despite the unknown etiology of RS3PE, several reports have described the putative association of this disease with malignant tumors. We herein report the findings of a 76-year-old man with RS3PE syndrome who developed hepatocellular carcinoma 3 years after achieving clinical remission of RS3PE using corticosteroid treatment; high vascular endothelial growth factor and tumor necrosis factor-alpha levels were considered to have contributed to carcinogenesis in this patient.

A case of hepatocellular carcinoma with long-term survival by multidisciplinary treatment for cranial and skeletal muscle metastases.

We report a case in which multidisciplinary treatment was effective for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) with cranial and skeletal muscle metastases. A 55-year-old male with HCC received sorafenib for lung metastases. He was admitted to our hospital due to the skull metastasis detected by fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET).

Genomic analysis of an aggressive case with metastatic intrahepatic mucinous cholangiocarcinoma.

Immunotherapy using anti-programmed death 1 ligand 1 (PD-L1) antibodies has shown clinical efficacy against hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and is recognized as the first-line treatment for unresectable HCC. PD-L1 expression is affected by various cytokines produced by immune cells in the tumor microenvironment; however, there is limited information about the effects of cytokine interactions on PD-L1 expression. In this study, we examined how cytokines induce PD-L1 expression in HCC cells.

Repair of refractory postoperative cerebrospinal fluid leakage using a reversed dermis flap in a pediatric lipomyelomeningocele patient.

Introduction: Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak and pseudomeningocele are common complications after surgery for spinal dysraphism.

Case Report And Technique: We report a 6-month-old girl with a lumbosacral lipomyelomeningocele and accessory lower limb who developed a refractory cerebrospinal fluid leak and pseudomeningocele after lipomyelomeningocele repair and removal of the accessory limb. The pseudomeningocele was successfully repaired using a reversed dermis flap made from excess skin that covered the meningocele.
