Pomegranate is one of the most popular fruits worldwide, and it is important to maintain the overall quality and bioaccessibility of freshly squeezed pomegranate juices (PJS). The adverse effects of heat treatment on sensory properties and phytochemicals encourage the use of non-thermal processes in the juice industry. Hereby, the effects of high-pressure homogenization (HPH) (50, 100, and 150 MPa) on the physicochemical properties, antimicrobial activity, in vitro bioaccessibility, and antioxidant capacity of freshly-squeezed PJS from different genotypes were investigated.

Single-center experience of four cases with iron-refractory iron deficiency anemia (IRIDA).

Background: Iron refractory iron deficiency anemia (IRIDA) is a rare autosomal recessive type of anemia characterized by unresponsiveness to oral iron therapy and partial response to parenteral iron therapy. In this article, we report the clinical presentation of four patients with IRIDA admitted to our clinic, including their laboratory values at admission and after oral and parenteral iron treatment, and the analysis of their mutation(s) in TMPRSS6 gene.

Case: Four patients from different families, aged between 3 and 14 years, two girls and two boys, two of whom were from consanguineous marriages, who were diagnosed with iron deficiency anemia in primary health care institutions and referred to our clinic because of inadequate response to oral iron treatment were included.

Avoiding Packing When an External Fixator Is Used in Cervical Cancer Brachytherapy: The Rationale for Vaginal Gauze Packing on Rectum and Bladder.

Purpose: The aim of this study is to investigate the rational effects of packing, which has seen reduced use after the introduction of fixators that perform the stabilization function-on rectum, bladder, and A point doses when used in conjunction with fixators.

Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on inoperable-cervical-cancer patients who underwent brachytherapy with tandem and ovoid at Kocaeli University Hospital between January 2023 and May 2024. Patients received external beam radiotherapy (EBRT), followed by high-dose-rate brachytherapy with either standard or packed plans.

The effect of 5-alpha reductase inhibitors on the detection of prostate cancer with multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging and prostate biopsy.

Aim: To evaluate the effect of 5 alpha-reductase inhibitor (5-ARI) treatment on prostate cancer detection by multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI).

Methods: We retrospectively collected data on 429 patients who underwent mpMRI before prostate biopsy in the Urology Department of Giresun University Training and Research Hospital between March 2018 and December 2021. The patients were categorized as those who had never been treated with 5-ARI (n=359) and those who were treated with 5-ARI for more than six months (n=70).

Background And Objectives: Bipolar electrocautery systems in neurosurgical procedures may induce thermal damage to adjacent tissues, especially neural tissues. Therefore, it is crucial to control thermal spread from the tips of bipolar forceps into adjacent tissues. The goal of this study was to compare the thermal damage induced in unintended adjacent tissues during coagulation with 6 different bipolar forceps.

Love of life and flourishing in Turkish youth: mediating effects of optimism and hope.

The concept of love of life, which refers to a positive attitude towards one's own life, care for it and attachment to it, has recently captured the attention of researchers in the field of positive psychology. Despite its growing importance, there is a lack of research investigating the underlying mechanisms through which love of life impacts the flourishing and well-being of individuals. For the first time, the present study examined the mediating roles of optimism and hope in the association between love of life and flourishing in Turkish youth.

Objectives: IL-1α/β and TNF are closely linked to the pathology of severe COVID-19 and sepsis. The soluble forms of their receptors, functioning as decoy receptors, exhibit inhibitory effects. However, little is known about their regulation in severe bacterial and viral infections, which we aimed to investigate in this study.

Methods: A total of 24 extracted teeth were divided into 4 groups, and plaster models were digitized. Attachment templates were produced with beveled attachments on premolars and rectangular attachments on molars.

Background: There was no scientific evidence about the initial treatment of hypertonic saline solution (HSS) in acutely decompensated heart failure (ADHF).

Objectives: This study assessed the impact of using HSS along with a loop diuretic (LD) as the first diuretic treatment for ADHF, focusing on renal function, electrolyte levels, and clinical outcomes.

Methods: In this retrospective case-control study, 171 adult patients (93 females/78 males) with ADHF were included between January 1, 2022, and December 31, 2022.

Introduction: Sleep disturbances are being increasingly recognized in association with autoimmune encephalitis (AIE). We investigated the prevalence of sleep-related symptoms and polysomnographic features of patients with AIE and the long-term outcomes in these patients in a multi-center, prospective study from Turkey.

Factors Affecting Turkish Medical Students' Pursuit of a Career in Neurosurgery: A Single Center Survey Study.

Background: Statistics show that over the past 2 decades, even in high-income countries, fewer and fewer students have listed neurosurgery as their top career option. Literature on medical students' pursuit of neurosurgical careers in middle- and low-income countries are scarce. The aim of this research, conducted in Turkey with a middle-income economy, was to contribute insights relevant to medical education and neurosurgery across the world.

Combined use of frontal plane QRS-T angle and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio in the risk prediction of ischemic cardiomyopathy in STEMI.

Background: Frontal plane QRS-T angle (fQRS-T) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) are highly important parameters that well-predict unfavorable outcomes in patients with ST-elevated myocardial infarction (STEMI).There are limited data on the predictive significance of ischemic cardiomyopathy (I-CMP) from the combination of fQRS-T and PLR in STEMI, compared to using fQRS-T and PLR alone.

Aim: We aimed to evaluate the ability of the combination of fQRS-T and PLR routinely obtained on admission to identify STEMI patients at risk of I-CMP.

Background: The administration of propofol and methylene blue (MB) can be associated with the appearance of prolonged green urine discoloration, particularly in patients with heart failure (HF) concomitant with renal and liver dysfunction. Understanding the reasons behind this phenomenon is of clinical significance.

Case Summary: A 79-year-old woman with a history of HF experienced dyspnoea and persistent green urine discoloration for a week, leading to her hospitalization for acutely decompensated HF.
