Background: Connective tissue diseases (CTDs) are characterized by immune system dysregulation, which can profoundly impact the gastrointestinal (GI) system. While GI bleeding is a well-recognized cause of mortality and morbidity in the USA, its occurrence in patients with CTD remains documented but underexplored in terms of inpatient outcomes. Recovery and reuse of bulk waste wood are particularly challenging because of usage defects and contaminations. Here, we present a robust and efficient strategy for regenerating used wood veneers into high-performance structural materials through micro/nano interface manipulation. Our approach involves using cellulose-based interlayers to bind together two waste wood plates without an external adhesive by partially dissolving and regenerating the interlayer using a solution of ionic liquids and dimethyl sulfoxide.

Novel approaches to functional lateralization: Assessing information in activity patterns across hemispheres and more accurately identifying structural homologues.

Functional lateralization is typically measured by comparing activation levels across the right and left hemispheres of the brain. Significant additional information, however, exists within distributed multi-voxel patterns of activity - a format not detectable by traditional activation-based analysis of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data. We introduce and test two methods -one anatomical, one functional- that allow hemispheric information asymmetries to be detected.

We estimate total health, health expenditure and income impacts of permanently lifting the temperature in living areas of the home to 18 °C in cold homes in South-eastern Australia (N = 17 million).

Methods: A proportional multistate lifetable model was used to estimate health adjusted life years (HALYs), health expenditure and income earnings, over the remainder of the lifespan of the population alive in 2021 (3% discount rate).

Ultrasound-based measures in carpal tunnel syndrome: What to measure?

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the most common peripheral entrapment neuropathy and is caused by compression of the median nerve (MN) at the level of transverse carpal ligament of the volar wrist. Radiomics is an advanced semi-automated image analysis method that is utilized to identify characteristics in the MN that can detect CTS with considerable reproducibility.

Neural correlates of mindful disengagement from worry.

Uncontrollable worry is a hallmark of generalized anxiety disorder and a transdiagnostic feature of psychopathology. Mindfulness-based strategies show promise for treating worry, but it is unknown which specific strategies are most beneficial, and how these skills might operate on a neurobiological level. We recruited 40 participants with clinically significant worry to undergo functional magnetic resonance imaging while engaging in real-time, idiographic worry and instructed disengagement using two mindfulness strategies (focused attention, acceptance) and one comparison strategy (suppression).

Background: Universal provision of iron supplements or iron-containing multiple micronutrient powders (MNPs) is widely used to prevent anemia in young children in low- and middle-income countries. The BRISC (Benefits and Risks of Iron Interventions in Children) trial compared iron supplements and MNPs with placebo in children <2 y old in rural Bangladesh.

Association of Simulated COVID-19 Policy Responses for Social Restrictions and Lockdowns With Health-Adjusted Life-Years and Costs in Victoria, Australia.

Importance: Countries have varied enormously in how they have responded to the COVID-19 pandemic, ranging from elimination strategies (eg, Australia, New Zealand, Taiwan) to tight suppression (not aiming for elimination but rather to keep infection rates low [eg, South Korea]) to loose suppression (eg, Europe, United States) to virtually unmitigated (eg, Brazil, India). Weighing the best option, based on health and economic consequences due to lockdowns, is necessary.

Pyrimidine compounds have proven to be effective and efficient additives capable of protecting mild steel in acidic media. This class of organic compounds often functions as adsorption-type inhibitors of corrosion by forming a protective layer on the metallic substrate. The present study reports a computational study of forty pyrimidine compounds that have been investigated as sustainable inhibitors of mild steel corrosion in molar HCl solution.

The inhibitors were found to effectively reduce the rates of steel dissolution at the anode as well as cathodic hydrogen evolution. The order of inhibition efficiencies of studied compounds is (PDP/LPR/EIS: 98.

Acute Kidney Injury after First Dose of AstraZeneca COVID-19 Vaccine Managed in a Nigerian Hospital.

Introduction: The association of kidney disease and COVID-19 vaccination has been reported with minimal change disease being a common presentation.

Case Report: Index patient is a 54-year-old female who presented with a history of reduction in urine output within 3 weeks of receiving the Oxford-AztraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine. Her serum creatinine on admission was 1,057 µmol/L with a premorbid serum creatinine of 78 µmol/L.

Objectives: Statin-associated immune-mediated necrotizing myopathy (IMNM) and idiopathic inflammatory myositis (IIM) are myopathies with overlapping features. This study compared the manifestations of IMNM to IIM in Native Americans.

Method: Twenty-one Native American patients with inflammatory myopathy (IM) were characterized as to diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidaemia, statin exposure, myopathy diagnosis, muscle histology, autoimmune and myositis-specific autoantibodies, therapy and outcome.
