In general, periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) is regarded as one of the most common complications of total joint arthroplasty (TJA) and may lead to surgical failure, revision surgery, amputation or death. Nowadays, PJI has become a global health concern, which brings a great burden to public healthcare. In addition, there are still obstacles to achieve high success rates in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of PJI.

Background: Many studies have been published on the relationship between different parameters with marginal bone loss around implants. The results of these studies vary, but some variables such as smoking or certain systemic conditions are more likely to predispose or exacerbate the resorption around implants. The aim of this study was to determine the rates of implants with radiographically detected marginal bone loss and to determine whether there is a relationship between the severity of destruction and certain risk factors like location of implant, restoration type, systemic condition, age, sex or smoking habits.

Background: The prevalence of obesity is increasing worldwide and it is known to be associated with many postoperative complications, including infection. Patients' body fat distribution may vary and body mass index (BMI) does not provide sufficient information about adipose tissue thickness of the lower extremities. The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between thigh diameters and early postoperative prosthesis-related joint infections (PJI) in patients who underwent arthroplasty.

Article Synopsis
  • Osteoarthritis of the knee primarily affects the medial compartment, leading to surgical treatments like high tibial osteotomy (HTO) and unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) for those unresponsive to conservative methods.
  • This study compared the effects of HTO and UKA on knee function and patellofemoral changes in 79 patients under 60, evaluating various knee metrics pre- and post-surgery.
  • Results indicated no adverse patellofemoral changes from either procedure, with significant differences in specific measurements, suggesting both surgical options are viable for younger patients with medial compartment osteoarthritis.

In patients with varus knee osteoarthritis, compensatory changes occur in the foot and ankle joints to compensate for the varus deformity of the knee. The aim of the study was to investigate the changes in the ankle of patients whose knee alignment was corrected with total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and to explore the clinical implications of these findings. : In this retrospective observational study, we analyzed 204 knees of 179 patients who had regular follow-ups out of 431 patients who underwent TKA for varus knee osteoarthritis between January 2019 and July 2021.

This study aims to assess the neurodevelopmental progress of high-risk infants 2 years post implementation of the Neurodevelopmental Follow-Up Unit (NFU) program at our hospital and explore implementation challenges for insights. Infants were assessed using the Hammersmith Infant Neurological Examination (HINE), The Alberta Infant Motor Scale (AIMS), and Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development, Third Edition (BSID-III). A multidisciplinary team provided comprehensive parent education covering neurologic cues, postural advice, and developmental instructions in accordance with the children's assessment findings.

Total knee arthroplasty is a consistently successful, cost-efficient, and highly effective surgical procedure for treating severe knee osteoarthritis. The success and longevity of total knee arthroplasty depend significantly on the fixation method used to secure the prosthetic components. This comprehensive review examines the primary fixation methods (cemented, cementless, and hybrid fixation), analysing their biomechanics, clinical outcomes, advantages, and disadvantages, focusing on recent advances and trends in total knee arthroplasty fixation.

The medial unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (mUKA) has been recognized as an excellent treatment for medial knee osteoarthritis. The posterior tibial slope (PTS) is measured radiographically with the intramedullary axis (IMA) to the tibial baseplate on the sagittal plane radiograph. However, in most computer-navigated or robotic mUKAs, the PTS is set from a transmalleolar axis (TMA).

Acetabular revision arthroplasty, a demanding field of reconstructive hip surgery, calls for innovative strategies to deal with challenging bone defects and implant failure seen in revision cases. Conventional implant solutions might fall short of adequately addressing severe bone loss and ensuring stable fixation, highlighting the necessity of customized strategies. Personalized megaimplants, distinguished by their tailor-made design and large-scale construction, present a viable option to overcome these challenges.

Periprosthetic joint infections (PJIs) are important factors in decreasing the success of hip and knee arthroplasties. It is a necessity to explore the epidemiological data and develop applications for rational antibiotic use, to address future infection control concerns. We aimed to investigate the microorganisms that were responsible and the related antibiograms in 121 patients with PJI, who were managed by two-stage revision surgery.

Background: Surgeons still face difficulties when performing aseptic acetabular revision on patients with extensive defects. Advances in three-dimensional printing technology (3DP) have afforded to the surgeons to create a patient-specific implant matching the morphology and topography of the defect.

Objective: The aim of the current research was to determine the survivorship in the treatment of acetabular bone defects with pelvic discontinuity (PD).

Delineating the complex network of interactions between antigen-specific T cells and antigen presenting cells (APCs) is crucial for effective precision therapies against cancer, chronic infections, and autoimmunity. However, the existing arsenal for examining antigen-specific T cell interactions is restricted to a select few antigen-T cell receptor pairs, with limited in situ utility. This lack of versatility is largely due to the disruptive effects of reagents on the immune synapse, which hinder real-time monitoring of antigen-specific interactions.

Backround: Periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) is a very important complication that occurs after total joint replacement. Diagnosing PJI is at least as difficult as this disease. There is no biomarker that alone can diagnose PJI.

Different anatomical variants have been reported for the proximal and distal femur. Given this context, the goal of our study was to answer the following question: Can we also identify different anatomical variants of the proximal humerus? Two hundred anteroposterior (AP) radiographs of the proximal humerus with an equal gender distribution and equal laterality per gender were reviewed. The metaphyseal diameter of the proximal humerus at the level of the anatomical neck (X) and the intramedullary diameter at 10 cm from the apex of the greater tuberosity (Y) were measured.

Microalgae are promising platforms for biofuel production. Transcription factors (TFs) are emerging as key regulators of lipid metabolism for biofuel production in microalgae. We previously identified a novel TF MYB1, which mediates lipid accumulation in the green microalga under nitrogen depletion.

The accuracy of preoperative synovial fluid microbe detection in periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) is widely reported. However, the reliability of this diagnostic modality amongst the different joints is not yet described. We aimed to compare the concordance rate between preoperative synovial fluid and intraoperative tissue cultures in shoulder, knee and hip PJIs.

Introduction: Dental implants are frequently preferred method for oral rehabilitation all over the world. The incidence of various complications such as incorrect prosthesis, peri-implant mucositis, and peri-implantitis is high; premature loss of implants is encountered due to osteointegration process not being completed for some unexplained reasons. However, there is no study in the literature examining the nonfunctional period of implants.
