Effect of Four Main Gastrectomy Procedures for Proximal Gastric Cancer on Patient Quality of Life: A Nationwide Multi-Institutional Study.

Purpose: This study aimed to examine the effects of 4 main types of gastrectomy for proximal gastric cancer on postoperative symptoms, living status, and quality of life (QOL) using the Postgastrectomy Syndrome Assessment Scale-45 (PGSAS-45).

Materials And Methods: We surveyed 1,685 patients with upper one-third gastric cancer who underwent total gastrectomy (TG; n=1,020), proximal gastrectomy (PG; n=518), TG with jejunal pouch reconstruction (TGJP; n=93), or small remnant distal gastrectomy (SRDG; n=54). The 19 main outcome measures (MOMs) of the PGSAS-45 were compared using the analysis of means (ANOM), and the general QOL score was calculated for each gastrectomy type.

[A Case of Ectopic Pheochromocytoma between the Abdominal Aorta and Inferior Vena Cava].

We report a case of ectopic pheochromocytoma which is relatively rare. A 50-year-old man was found to have an abdominal tumor on a medical examination, and contrast-enhanced computed tomography showed a retroperitoneal tumor between the abdominal aorta and the inferior vena cava. As a result of close examinations, an ectopic pheochromocytoma was suspected.

[A case of pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis after neoadjuvant chemotherapy for esophageal cancer].

We report 2 cases of stage IV gastric cancer in which the primary tumor was resected after chemotherapy combined with trastuzumab was administered. Case 1: A 57-year-old man who reported epigastric discomfort was diagnosed as having gastric cancer with Virchow's lymph node metastasis. Because his gastric cancer was human epidermal growth factor receptor( HER)-2-positive, he was treated with trastuzumab+capecitabine and CDDP( XP therapy).

Characterization of heparan sulfate on hepatocytes in regenerating rat liver.

Background/purpose: Liver regeneration occurs through interactions between the receptors on hepatocytes, including proteoglycans (PGs) and glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), and various growth factors. We investigated serial changes in GAGs, particularly heparan sulfate (HS), in proliferating hepatocytes.

Methods: We performed 70% hepatectomy in male Wistar rats, and we then isolated hepatocytes by a collagenase perfusion method after each surgery.

Anaplastic carcinoma associated with a mucinous cystic neoplasm of the pancreas during pregnancy: report of a case and a review of the literature.

Oncogenesis of anaplastic carcinoma of the pancreas is a subject of controversy, because it shows sarcomatous nature with extremely poor prognosis. We herein report an unusual case of anaplastic carcinoma occurring with a recurrent mucinous cystic neoplasm in a 38-year-old female. A 10-cm retroperitoneal cystic mass was pointed out in the first pregnancy and a probable diagnosis of mucinous cystic neoplasm was made in October 2000.
