It is technically challenging to quantitatively apply strains to tune catalysis because most heterogeneous catalysts are nanoparticles, and lattice strains can only be applied indirectly via core-shell structures or crystal defects. Herein, we report quantitative relations between macroscopic strains and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activities of dealloyed nanoporous gold (NPG) by directly applying macroscopic strains upon bulk NPG. It was found that macroscopic compressive strains lead to a decrease, while macroscopic tensile strains improve the HER activity of NPG, which is in line with the -band center model.

The aim of this study was to investigate whether virtual and real TSCT could measure the solid size of early-stage lung adenocarcinoma. The pair of original thin-CT and simulated thick-CT from the training data with TSCT images (thickness, 0.

Containing magnesium oxide nanoparticles (MgO NPs) as porogens and multilayer graphene nanosheets as UV-scattering inhibitors, the composite photoresin is formed to simple cubic microlattices with digitally designed porosity of 50%. After carbonization in vacuum at 1000 °C and chemical removal of MgO NPs, it is realized that carbon microlattices possessing hierarchical porosity are composed of the lattice architecture (≈100 µm), macropores (≈5 µm), mesopores (≈50 nm), and micropores (≈1 nm).

We evaluated the performance of VTS technique for assessment of the spine. VTS was applied to 4-mm-thick CT images of 73 patients, and the visibility of intervertebral spaces was evaluated on the 4-mm-thick and VTS images.

A hard carbon microlattice, digitally designed and fabricated by stereolithography 3D-printing and pyrolysis, offers enormous potential for high-mass-loading electrodes. In this work, sodium-ion batteries using hard carbon microlattices produced by an inexpensive 3D printer are demonstrated.

However, the intrinsic relation between the structure of amorphous carbon and Na storage remains to be debated due to the difficulty in controlling and characterizing the local atomic configurations of amorphous carbon. Here we report quantitative measurements of Na storage in a low-temperature dealloyed hard carbon with a tunable local structure from completely disordered micropores to gradually increased graphitic order domains.

In this study, we revealed the protective role of periostin, a matricellular protein that binds to several ECM proteins during muscle regeneration. In intact muscle, periostin was localized at the neuromuscular junction, muscle spindle, and myotendinous junction, which are connection sites between muscle fibers and nerves or tendons.

It has been previously reported that FAM20C is required for maintenance of healthy periodontal tissues. However, there has been no report that any extracellular matrix molecules expressed in periodontal tissues are indeed substrates of FAM20C.

Using a combination of two-photon lithography and high-temperature pyrolysis, we have created micro-sized pyrolytic carbon with a tensile strength of 1.60 ± 0.

In addition to main types of fibrosis, other types of fibrosis in incredible diseases have been reported. Among them, liver fibrosis, stroke, and rhinosinusitis are described as new cases of periostin action. To understand periostin function in a new area of fibrosis linked with inflammation, periostin can be used as a new tool to elucidate the mechanisms of unknown diseases.

Thus periostin has been expected for controlling these crucial systems in bone. The results from periostin deficient mice demonstrate that periostin acts on bone remodeling though detailed mechanisms are unknown.

Further experiments investigating the periostin structures that are relevant to diseases are essential for an in-depth understanding of their functions, which would accelerate their clinical applications by establishing new approaches for curing intractable diseases. Furthermore, this understanding would enhance our knowledge of novel functions of periostin related to stemness and response to mechanical stress .

Methods: The roles of POSTN in ragweed-induced experimental allergic conjunctivitis (RW-EAC) were evaluated using both POSTN-knockout (KO) and congenic BALB/c wild-type mice. Histological analysis was carried out to enumerate eosinophils/basophils in the conjunctival tissue.
Periostin is a matricellular protein that is secreted by fibroblasts and interacts with various cell-surface integrin molecules. Although periostin is known to support tumor development in human malignancies, little is known about its effect on lung-cancer progression. We here demonstrate that periostin is a negative prognostic factor that increases tumor proliferation through ERK signaling in non-small cell lung carcinoma.

Although biodegradable polymer scaffolds are used for shape retention, deformation after transplantation can occur. Here, we showed that periostin (PN), which is abundantly expressed in fibrous tissues, contributes to the maturation and shape retention of tissue-engineered cartilage through conformational changes in collagen molecules.

We developed a lithography-based process to create complex 3D nano-architected metals with ~100 nm resolution. We first synthesize hybrid organic-inorganic materials that contain Ni clusters to produce a metal-rich photoresist, then use two-photon lithography to sculpt 3D polymer scaffolds, and pyrolyze them to volatilize the organics, which produces a >90 wt% Ni-containing architecture.

These adjacent domains bind to extracellular matrix proteins (type I collagen, fibronectin, tenascin-C, and laminin γ2), and BMP-1 that catalyzes crosslinking of type I collagen, and proteoglycans, which play a role in cell adhesion. The binding sites on periostin have been demonstrated to contribute to the mechanical strength of connective tissues, enhancing intermolecular interactions in close proximity and their assembly into extracellular matrix architectures, where periostin plays further essential roles in physiological maintenance and pathological progression.
