Background: A plain pelvic radiograph is usually conducted with the lower limbs in internal rotation. This is to correct the anteversion of the femur. However, in the fracture neck of the femur, internal rotation of the fractured limb is avoided, because it would be painful.

Distal femoral arthropometry in Nigerians and its correlation to total knee replacement implants.

Introduction: Total Knee replacement (TKR) is performed to relieve pain and restore both the mechanical axis and joint line whenever indicated. Most of prostheses being used for TKR were manufactured using dimensions from Caucasians' measurements. This study documented the dimensions of distal femora of Nigerians and correlated the dimensions with different TKR prostheses.

It remains a major reason for hospitalization among children and adolescents around the world, with resultant death or disability. Introduction: Preoperative planning is an important step before any joint replacement surgery. In developing countries standardised radiographs and planning tools might not be available but nevertheless hemiarthroplasties are performed in certain trauma cases. An equation should be devised to allow a preoperative estimation of the expected femoral head size dimensions in those situations.

Scholarly Activities Participation among Surgical Resident Doctors in Nigeria.

Background: Scholarly activity in various forms are academic deeds such as researches and research outputs in articles, oral presentations, publications and theses which are disseminated and peer- reviewed.

Objectives: This study aims to assess the level of participation of residents in scholarly activities including their attendance of national and international conferences during residency training.

Methods: This was a descriptive cross-sectional study of 81 resident doctors in General and Orthopaedic surgery, who attended the revision courses organized by their Faculties.

Femoral neck shaft angles: A radiological anthropometry study.

Background: Most of the available orthopaedic implants were designed and manufactured based on data from Western population whose skeletal dimensions are different from those of Africans.

Objectives: This study was conducted to determine the value of the neck-shaft angle (NSA) of Nigerians living in Lagos for the purpose of adequate planning, preparation, and pre-operative selection of orthopaedic implants for surgeries involving the femoral neck and stocking of orthopaedic implants in hospitals located in resource poor countries like Nigeria.

Materials And Methods: This was a retrospective study which involved measuring the NSAs of anterior-posterior views of pelvic radiographs of adult patients reported "normal study" by the radiologist.

Background: Mentorship is important in residency training as it is necessary for personal and professional development of the resident trainees.

Objectives: This study documents mentorship in orthopaedic residency training programme in Nigeria by assessing the awareness of orthopaedic residents on the role of a mentor, willingness to be mentored and their perceived reasons for the possible lack of mentors/ participation of senior colleagues in a mentorship programme.

Method: This was a descriptive cross sectional study of 37 orthopaedic residents attending a revision course of the Faculty of Orthopaedics, National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria.

Health literacy is the degree to which individuals have the capacity to obtain, process and understand basic health information and services needed to make an appropriate decisions concerning their health.
