[Spinal paralysis caused by spinal metastasis of prostatic cancer].

From 1977 to 1986, in the Chiba University Hospital, 107 cases of prostatic cancer with bone metastasis were experienced. In 10 of them spinal paralysis caused by spinal metastasis of prostatic cancer was observed. Untreated five cases received endocrine therapy.

Immunohistochemical study of androgen receptor in benign hyperplastic and cancerous human prostates.

Androgen receptor was detected immunohistochemically in benign as well as malignant prostatic tissues by using a monoclonal rat anti-human androgen receptor antibody (AN 1-15). In both benign and malignant cells, the androgen receptor was exclusively localized in nuclei. In hyperplastic prostate, the androgen receptor was stained in the glandular and the stromal cells.

Histochemical examination of expression of ras p21 protein and R 1881-binding protein in human prostatic cancers.

Expression of ras p21 was examined with monoclonal antibody RASK-3 in normal, benign hyperplasic, and cancerous prostates. In patients with stage D2 disease who received endocrine therapy, the relation between ras p21 expression, response to therapy, and prognosis was studied. In these patients, R 1881-binding protein (androgen receptor and progestin-binding protein) was also examined.

Investigating the response of prostatic cancer to endocrine therapy.

The presence of androphilic protein identified histochemically with R 1881-CMO-BSA-FITC correlated with response to endocrine therapy and prognosis. Ras P21 was not a useful indicator of the subsequent course of the disease. Conventional X ray assessment of boney metastases still seems of use in monitoring overall progress of the disease.

[Localization of pancreatic insulinomas by combined radiographic methods].

Seventeen cases with a total of eighteen insulinomas were examined by ultrasonography (US), computed tomography (CT), angiography, percutaneous transhepatic portal and pancreatic venous sampling (PTPS) and intraoperative ultrasonography (IOUS). We discussed about diagnostic accuracy of insulinomas on these diagnostic modalities. Tumor localization was achieved by US in 39%, CT in 72% and angiography in 81%.

Transcriptional regulation of F plasmid gene srnB: rifampicin-promoted in vitro readthrough of a terminator in the leader region.

srnB is an F-plasmid encoded gene, otherwise silent, whose expression is induced by added rifampicin, leading to the release of cellular Mg2+ and degradation of stable RNA. In the absence of rifampicin, transcripts from the srnB gene were relatively short. S1 nuclease mapping revealed that the short mRNA species terminated within the leader, at the 3' end of a potential stem-and-loop structure.

[Morphological feature and incidence of TMJ disorders in mandibular lateral displacement cases].

In the malocclusion with mandibular lateral displacement (MLD), it is difficult to establish the functional occlusion by orthodontic means. The careful diagnosis brings us to recognize that MLD condition is the rule rather than the exception. In order to examine the characteristics of the cranio-facial morphology in the cases with MLD, the posteroanterior cephalograms were analyzed.

[The usefulness of two-dimensional transesophageal echocardiography in follow-up studies of dissecting aortic aneurysm].

Two-dimensional transesophageal echocardiography (2D-TEE) facilitates clear imaging of the thoracic aorta, and we have already reported the diagnostic value of this procedure for detecting dissecting aortic aneurysm (DAA). Recently, we performed preoperative and postoperative 2D-TEE in nine surgically treated patients with DAA (Debakey type I: 2 cases, type II: 1 case, type IIIa: 2 cases, type IIIb: 4 cases), and repeated 2D-TEE in six medically treated patients (DeBakey type IIIa: 2 cases, type IIIb: 4 cases), and the usefulness of 2D-TEE in the follow-up study of DAA was evaluated. Two types of ultrasound probe (radial scan type, and sector type with a color-Doppler system) were used in this study.

[Precancerous lesions of the colon and rectum].

Adenomatous polyp, adenomatosis coli and dysplasia in the inflammatory bowel disease are noted as precancerous lesions. 1) Adenomatous polyps are easily found by colonoscopy as protruded lesions and diagnosed by histopathological study. 2) Adenomatosis coli is easily diagnosed by barium enema and colonoscopy.

[Fast neutron radiotherapy of prostate cancer].

Between 1976 and 1987, sixty eight patients suffering from prostate cancer were treated with fast neutron radiotherapy at the NIRS hospital in Chiba, Japan. Tumor doses of TDF 100 were administered to the prostate gland, the regional lymphnodes, and the true pelvis, using the two opposing fields by fast neutron alone or with a boost. The overall local or regional tumor recurrence rate was found to be 10% and local control seemed to correlate with the histological differentiation of the cancer tissue, though there was no definite correlation with hormone treatment.

[Angiographic findings of gallbladder cancer].

The patients with gallbladder cancer often accompany with chronic cholecystitis. This fact leads angiographic diagnosis difficult. So the angiographic findings of the chronic cholecystitis are first analyzed precisely and subtracting the angiographic findings of the gallbladder cancer from these gives us the pure (true) angiographic findings of the gallbladder cancer.

Progression and selection in heterogeneous tumor composed of androgen-responsive Shionogi carcinoma 115 and its autonomous subline (Chiba subline 2).

Shionogi Carcinoma 115 (SC 115) is an androgen-dependent mouse tumor, and Chiba subline 2 (CS 2) is its androgen-independent subline which differs from SC 115 in cell size, amount of androgen receptors, and karyotype. To shed light on the mechanism of clonal selection of androgen-independent tumors, mixed tumors with SC 115 and CS 2 were prepared, and growth of these tumors was examined in vivo and in vitro. When the mixed tumor was transplanted in mice, CS 2 showed a predominant growth over SC 115.

[Incidence of temporomandibular joint disorders in patients with malocclusion].

In order to examine the relationship between the incidence of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders and the occlusal problems, epidemiological surveys regarding the signs of TMJ disorders (joint noise, pain and disturbance of mandibular movement) were carried out to 149 untreated patients (54 males and 95 females) with malocclusion. Characteristics of progestin binder in hypertrophic human prostate.

The human prostate contains a protein which binds with progesterone in a high affinity and low capacity fashion. Characteristics of the progestin-binding protein in the prostate have been disputable; whether it is progesterone receptor or not. Therefore, the characteristics of the progestin binder in the benign hypertrophic human prostate was examined in the present study.

[Comparison of 3 assay kits of prostate specific antigen in serum of prostatic cancer].

The serum prostate specific antigen (PA) of the patients with prostatic cancer were determined with 3 assay kits, the Diagnostic Products Cooperation (DPC) kit, the Eiken kit and the Dainippon Pharmaceutical Co. (MARKIT F) kit. The first 2 assay kits involve radioimmunoassay and the latter EIA.

[Prostatic acid phosphatase (PAP), gamma-seminoprotein (gamma-Sm) and prostate specific antigen (PA) in prostatic cancer].

The levels of prostatic acid phosphatase (PAP), gamma-seminoprotein (gamma-Sm) and prostate specific antigen (PA) were determined in the serum of 200 untreated patients 28 patients with reactivated prostatic cancer and 179 patients with benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH) from 1979 to 1987. PAP and gamma-Sm were determined using an Eiken and Chugai kit, respectively and PA was assayed using an Eiken or Travenol kit. The sensitivity of PAP, gamma-Sm and PA respectively in the untreated prostatic cancer cases was 0, 0% and 67%, for Stage A1, 25, 17 and 100% for Stage A2, 23, 50 and 60% for Stage B, 62, 81 and 94% in Stage C, 58, 67 and 90% for Stage D1, 86, 88 and 100% for Stage D2.

[Prostatic carcinoma. I: Androgen dependency of prostatic carcinoma].

Endocrine therapy, which consists of orchiectomy followed by administration of large doses of estrogen, then a reduced amount of estrogen, has been applied as the main treatment for stage D2 prostatic cancer. Alternatively, anti-androgen is used for elderly patients or those with cardiovascular disorders. Survival rate with endocrine therapy at 5 and 10 years was 35% and 16%, respectively.
