Background: Periarticular injection is becoming more commonly utilized for pain relief following total knee arthroplasty. However, we are aware of no randomized controlled trial that has investigated the efficacy of periarticular injection for pain relief after simultaneous bilateral total knee arthroplasty.

Methods: We performed a randomized controlled trial of patients scheduled for simultaneous bilateral total knee arthroplasty.

Background: Although epidural analgesia has been used for postoperative pain control after total knee arthroplasty, its usefulness is being reevaluated because of possible adverse effects. Recent studies have proven the efficacy of periarticular analgesic injection and its low prevalence of adverse effects. The present study compares the clinical efficacies of epidural analgesia and periarticular injection after total knee arthroplasty.

Purpose: The reduction of periosteal compression through the use of a locking plate may minimize disturbances of bone blood supply and may improve the rate of bone union. A single-centre, assessor blinded randomized controlled trial was conducted to compare the clinical effectiveness of a locking plate and a non-locking plate.

Methods: A total of 52 patients with AO/OTA 44B lateral malleolar fractures were included in this study.

Background: Intraoperative soft tissue tension can significantly impact the range of motion following total knee arthroplasty (TKA). However, the level of impact remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between intraoperative soft tissue tension and postoperative range of motion.

Background: Delayed unions or refractures are not rare following surgical treatment for proximal fifth metatarsal metaphyseal-diaphyseal fractures. Intramedullary screw fixation with bone autografting has the potential to resolve the issue. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the result of the procedure.

Background: National arthroplasty registers are valuable tools for reporting on an updated epidemiologic survey of arthroplasties and for evaluating the performance of implants and operative procedures through the early identification of failure risk factors. More than ten registers have been launched globally, but no national register has been reported in Asia.

Methods: In February 2006, a pilot project of the Japan Arthroplasty Register (JAR) for total hip arthroplasty (THA) and total knee arthroplasty/unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (TKA/UKA) was launched by the Japanese Orthopaedic Association (JOA).

The significance of achievement of soft tissue balancing in total knee arthroplasty is well recognized. There are few reports dealing with soft tissue tension in total knee arthroplasty. It is expected that the soft tissue tension will affect post-operative results such as postoperative ROM and stability.

It is far from clear how best to define the proper strength of soft-tissue tensioning in total knee arthroplasty (TKA). We attached a torque driver to the Monogram balancer/tensor device and measured soft-tissue tension in full extension and 90 degrees flexion during TKA. In our surgical procedure, when we felt proper soft-tissue tension was being applied, the mean distraction force was noted to be 126N in extension and 121N in flexion.

This study describes a new technique to evaluate accurate linear polyethylene wear and reports the in vivo annual linear wear rate in total knee arthroplasty. Patients (n = 69) were assessed using a single standing anteroposterior radiograph with 8 reference markers around the knee, where 3-dimensional (3D) locations of markers and 3D geometry of the implant were known. By matching the 3D locations of the markers and their projected points on the radiograph, 3D/2D transformation parameters were estimated.
