Human neonates are predisposed to an increased risk of mortality from infection due to fundamental differences in the framework of innate and adaptive immune responses relative to those in the adult population. As one key difference in neonates, an increase in the immunosuppressive cytokine, IL-27, is responsible for poor outcomes in a murine neonatal model of bacterial sepsis. In our model, the absence of IL-27 signaling during infection is associated with improved maintenance of body mass, increased bacterial clearance with reduced systemic inflammation, and decreased mortality rates that correlate to preservation of glucose homeostasis and insulin production.

Type-I and -III interferons play a central role in immune rejection of pathogens and tumors, thus promoting immunogenicity and suppressing tumor recurrence. Double strand RNA is an important ligand that stimulates tumor immunity via interferon responses. Differentiation of embryonic stem cells to pluripotent epithelial cells activates the interferon response during development, raising the question of whether epithelial vs.

Background: There is a trend toward matching in a different region than previous training for the independent plastic surgery match cycles from 2019 to 2021, which differs from the trend to match within the same region for integrated plastic surgery programs. Notably, residency interviews transitioned from in-person to virtual in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic. Therefore, we compared in-person versus virtual interview match trends from 2019 to 2023.

Systemic administration of interleukin (IL)-12 induces potent anti-tumor immune responses in preclinical cancer models through the systemic activation of effector immune cells and release of proinflammatory cytokines. IL-12-loaded PLGA nanospheres (IL12ns) are hypothesized to improve therapeutic efficacy and thwart unwanted side effects observed in previous human clinical trials. Through the investigation of peripheral blood and local tissue immune responses in healthy BALB/c mice, the immune-protective pharmacodynamics of IL12ns were suggested.

GM-CSF has been employed as an adjuvant to cancer immunotherapy with mixed results based on dosage. We previously showed that GM-CSF regulated tumor angiogenesis by stimulating soluble vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) receptor-1 from monocytes/macrophages in a dose-dependent manner that neutralized free VEGF, and intratumoral injections of high-dose GM-CSF ablated blood vessels and worsened hypoxia in orthotopic polyoma middle T Ag (PyMT) triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). In this study, we assessed both immunoregulatory and oxygen-regulatory components of low-dose versus high-dose GM-CSF to compare effects on tumor oxygen, vasculature, and antitumor immunity.

Unlabelled: Immediate expander/implant-based breast reconstruction after mastectomy has become more sought after by patients. Although many patients choose this technique due to good aesthetic outcomes, lack of donor site morbidity, and shorter procedure times, it is not without complications. The most reported complications include seroma, infection, hematoma, mastectomy flap necrosis, wound dehiscence, and implant exposure, with an overall complication rate as high as 45%.

In response to external stimuli during immune responses, monocytes can have multifaceted roles such as pathogen clearance and tissue repair. However, aberrant control of monocyte activation can result in chronic inflammation and subsequent tissue damage. Granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) induces monocyte differentiation into a heterogenous population of monocyte-derived dendritic cells (moDCs) and macrophages.

Acute pulmonary edema is a rare but severe complication of hyperbaric oxygen therapy. While patients with known cardiovascular problems may be able to withstand this therapy, rapid decompensation can still occur. Here, we present a case of a patient with known low ejection fraction and severe mitral regurgitation who developed acute pulmonary edema during the first hyperbaric treatment for a foot ulcer.

Human newborns exhibit increased vulnerability and risk of mortality from infection that is consistent with key differences in the innate and adaptive immune responses relative to those in adult cells. We have previously shown an increase in the immune suppressive cytokine, IL-27, in neonatal cells and tissues from mice and humans. In a murine model of neonatal sepsis, mice deficient in IL-27 signaling exhibit reduced mortality, increased weight gain, and better control of bacteria with reduced systemic inflammation.

Articular cartilage has a limited capacity to self-heal once damaged. Tissue-specific stem cells are a solution for cartilage regeneration; however, expansion resulting in cell senescence remains a challenge as a large quantity of high-quality tissue-specific stem cells are needed for cartilage regeneration. Our previous report demonstrated that decellularized extracellular matrix (dECM) deposited by human synovium-derived stem cells (SDSCs), adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs), urine-derived stem cells (UDSCs), or dermal fibroblasts (DFs) provided an solution to rejuvenate human SDSCs in proliferation and chondrogenic potential, particularly for dECM deposited by UDSCs.

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a common feature in obesity, comprising a cluster of abnormalities including abdominal fat accumulation, hyperglycemia, hyperinsulinemia, dyslipidemia, and hypertension, leading to diabetes and cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Intake of carbohydrates (CHO), particularly a sugary diet that rapidly increases blood glucose, triglycerides, and blood pressure levels is the predominant determining factor of MetS. Complex CHO, on the other hand, are a stable source of energy taking a longer time to digest.

Multiple myeloma (MM) is a hematological cancer with inevitable drug resistance. MM cells interacting with bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) undergo substantial changes in the transcriptome and develop de novo multi-drug resistance. As a critical component in transcriptional regulation, how the chromatin landscape is transformed in MM cells exposed to BMSCs and contributes to the transcriptional response to BMSCs remains elusive.

Aggressive and recurrent gynecological cancers are associated with worse prognosis and a lack of effective therapeutic response. Ovarian cancer (OC) patients are often diagnosed in advanced stages, when drug resistance, angiogenesis, relapse, and metastasis impact survival outcomes. Currently, surgical debulking, radiotherapy, and/or chemotherapy remain the mainstream treatment modalities; however, patients suffer unwanted side effects and drug resistance in the absence of targeted therapies.

Although radiotherapy and most cancer drugs target the proliferation of cancer cells, it is metastasis, the complex process by which cancer cells spread from the primary tumor to other tissues and organs of the body where they form new tumors, that leads to over 90% of all cancer deaths. Thus, there is an urgent need for anti-metastasis strategies alongside chemotherapy and radiotherapy. An important step in the metastatic cascade is migration.
