Purpose: To assess the contribution of intense neck ultrasonography (US) follow-up in the clinical management of differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC) patients with the American Thyroid Association (ATA) low-intermediate-risk of recurrence and an excellent response after total thyroidectomy and radioiodine therapy.

Materials And Methods: Medical records of patients who underwent serial follow-up neck US examinations between 1996 and 2022 were analyzed retrospectively. The utility of serial US examinations in detecting structural recurrence was assessed in all patients and different subgroups-categorized per the initial risk of recurrence and stimulated thyroglobulin (sTg) level at 1-year response assessment.

Objective: Ablation therapy is employed in low-risk differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) cases to facilitate patient monitoring by reducing thyroglobulin (Tg) levels to measurable levels below after surgery by eliminating residual thyroid tissue. However, there is still uncertainty about the minimum activity dose required for effective ablation. Opting for low-dose [131I]-NaI for ablation offers several advantages for both patients and healthcare services.

Article Synopsis
  • Congenital melanocytic nevus is typically a harmless skin growth present at birth, but larger ones can turn malignant, leading to recommendations for removal in childhood.
  • This article discusses a unique case of a 39-year-old man with a giant nevus covering 10% of his body, who underwent a two-step surgical procedure.
  • The treatment involved removing the nevus entirely, applying a dermal matrix for support, and using a skin graft, resulting in complete healing in 35 days.

Article Synopsis
  • Nephrolithiasis, a common kidney condition that can lead to kidney failure, is influenced by oxidative stress, prompting research into agents that may alleviate this issue, such as MC extract, known for its antioxidant properties.* -
  • The study involved Wistar albino rats divided into four groups, where nephrolithiasis was induced using ethylene glycol, and the effects of preventive and therapeutic MC extract were evaluated through urine and tissue analysis.* -
  • Results showed that MC extract successfully normalized urine and tissue parameters associated with oxidative stress and tissue damage, indicating potential for clinical use in preventing kidney stone formation through further research.*

Pulmonary insufficiency is the primary cause of death in cases of major burns accompanied by inhalation damage. It is important to consider the impact on the face and neck in flame burns. Early implementation of bronchial hygiene measures and oxygenation treatment in inhalation injury can reduce mortality.

A 70-year-old man underwent right upper lobectomy for lung adenocarcinoma. During the operation, hemostatic matrix (as known Floseal) was used to prevent pulmonary laceration-associated bleeding. When F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography/computed tomography was performed for staging after surgery, intense F-FDG uptake was observed in the cicatricial fibrotic tissue in the operation area, and no significant change was observed in that area during the 4-year follow-up.

In this study, the effects of peeled oleaster flour (OF) addition (0.5% and 1%) with high-pressure homogenization (HPH) at 100 MPa on acidification kinetics, physicochemical, functional, and rheological properties of kefir made from bovine whole milk were investigated. The fermentation kinetic parameters such as and decreased by 23.

The aim of this study is to investigate the contribution of concurrent physical therapy to the preservation of hand function in patients with hand burns. This retrospective cohort study included the records of adult patients who presented with hand burns between July 1, 2020, and December 1, 2021. A total of 67 of 1578 burn patients who attended the clinic were included in this study.

Stress-related disorders predominately affect females, yet preclinical models of chronic stress exclusively use males especially in models where social stressors are studied. Here, we implemented a 21-day novel social defeat paradigm in which a female and male C57 intruder are simultaneously placed in the cage of a territorial, resident CD-1 male mouse, and the resident proceeds to attack both intruders. Mice were given access to a regular laboratory diet, high in carbohydrates, and a palatable diet, high in fat.

Aim: Oxygen is required for cell migration into the scaffold and for the survival of the overlying graft in the use of a single-layer scaffold. In the absence of diffusion from the avascular wound base, such as in areas above the bone/tendon, oxygen delivery from the lateral edges of the scaffold is important. This study compared the oxygen permeability of skin scaffolds, currently commercially available in Turkey (Nevelia®, MatriDerm®, and Pelnac®), in the lateral plane.

Background/aim: Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is a malign tumor that associated with smoking and alcohol consumption, eating habits, environmental factors, and genetic susceptibility of the individuals. The Survivin gene, also known as BIRC5, plays important roles in the regulation of the cell cycle and apoptosis. The aim of the present study is to investigate Survivin -31G/C polymorphism in OSCC development and prognosis.

This expert-opinion-based document was prepared by a group of specialists in pediatric inherited metabolic diseases and infectious diseases including administrative board members of Turkish Society for Pediatric Nutrition and Metabolism to provide guidance for the care of children with lysosomal storage disorders (LSDs) during the COVID-19 pandemic in Turkey. The experts reached consensus on key areas of focus regarding COVID-19-based risk status in relation to intersecting immune-inflammatory mechanisms and disease patterns in children with LSDs, diagnostic virus testing, particularly preventive measures and priorities during the pandemic, routine screening and diagnostic interventions for LSDs, psychological and socioeconomic impact of confinement measures and quarantines and optimal practice patterns in managing LSDs and/or COVID-19. The participating experts agreed on the intersecting characteristics of immune-inflammatory mechanisms, end-organ damage and prognostic biomarkers in LSD and COVID-19 populations, emphasizing the likelihood of enhanced clinical care when their interaction is clarified further studies addressing certain aspects related to immunity, lysosomal dysfunction and disease pathogenesis.
