Retinopathy is a group of retinal disabilities that causes severe visual impairments or complete blindness. Due to the capability of optical coherence tomography to reveal early retinal abnormalities, many researchers have utilized it to develop autonomous retinal screening systems. However, to the best of our knowledge, most of these systems rely only on mathematical features, which might not be helpful to clinicians since they do not encompass the clinical manifestations of screening the underlying diseases.

Introduction: Contrast nephropathy (CN) is characterized by oxidative stress, vasoconstriction, tubular toxicity, and hypoxia of the renal medulla. We aimed to test the therapeutic effects of an α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) agonist, GTS-21, in an experimental CN model.

Methods: Male Sprague-Dawley rats (n = 40) were divided into 4 groups: saline-treated control, GTS-21-treated control, contrast, and GTS-21-treated contrast groups.

Liver transplant is an important treatment option for end-stage liver disease, and living related donation is an option to shorten or eliminate the waiting period for the patients, especially when shortage of organs is of concern. It is crucial to provide optimal safety for the donors and to thoroughly examine them preoperatively in order to decrease perioperative and postoperative complications. Here, we report the case of a living donor who had undergone a left liver lobectomy and on postoperative day 2 presented with a radiologically severe pulmonary embolism, despite the absence of any risk factor for venous thromboembolism or pulmonary embolism.

Background: Adipokines play an important role in the regulation of inflammatory responses toward infections, including COVID-19. This study aimed to investigate the role of chemerin, adiponectin, and leptin in prognosis and post-COVID lung sequelae in hospitalized patients with COVID-19.

Methods: Serum levels of the three adipokines were measured upon admission of polymerase chain reaction-confirmed patients with COVID-19 who were followed up for 6 months for the clinical outcome and lung sequelae formation.

Purpose: To evaluate the serum fibrinogen/albumin ratios in patients with acute and chronic central serous chorioretinopathy, and healthy control samples.

Methods: Serum fibrinogen/albumin ratios were assessed in patients with acute (Group-1, 30 eyes) and chronic (Group-2, 30 eyes) central serous chorioretinopathy, and compared with healthy control (Group-3, 30 eyes) samples.

Results: Fibrinogen/albumin ratios were significantly higher in Group-1 (104.

Article Synopsis
  • Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is a highly aggressive brain tumor with a low average survival rate of just 14.6 months, driven by the presence of glioma stem cells which contribute to treatment resistance.
  • The research utilized gene expression data to identify and analyze differentially expressed genes (DEGs) related to GBM, leading to the identification of five hub genes (GUCA1A, RFC2, GNG11, MMP19, NRG1) that are linked to tumor progression and prognosis.
  • Key findings were supported by protein-protein interaction (PPI) and pathway analysis, revealing the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling pathway as significant,

Introduction: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), causing a global pandemic starting from December 2019, showed a course that resulted in serious mortality in the world. In order to understand SARSCoV-2 better, here we aimed to compare the similar and different characteristics of Influenza viruses occurring in the same season with SARS-CoV-2.

Materials And Methods: A total of 144 patients (31 patients with COVID-19, 62 patients with H1N1 influenza, and 51 patients with influenza B) were included in the study.

Horner's syndrome is one of the rare complications after anterior approach intervertebral disc herniation surgery. Here, we described a 35-year-old male patient with Horner's syndrome accompanied by brachial plexus injury at the upper trunk level and vertebral artery occlusion after anterior ipsilateral approach cervical discectomy and cervical disc prosthesis operation. We are not aware of a similar case of these complications after this operation in the literature.

Article Synopsis
  • On May 21, 2019, Advanced LIGO and Virgo detected a significant gravitational-wave signal known as GW190521, indicating a high probability event with a low chance of false alarms.
  • The signal suggests it resulted from the merger of two black holes, one around 85 solar masses and the other about 66 solar masses, with the primary black hole likely being an intermediate mass black hole.
  • The source of the merger is estimated to be about 5.3 billion light-years away, and the rate of similar black hole mergers is estimated to be about 0.13 mergers per billion cubic parsecs per year.
