Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is the greatest pandemic in a century. In this study, children with mild COVID-19 infections were evaluated at least 8 weeks after the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test positivity, and the frequency of hypertension (HT) in these children was investigated. These results were compared to those of the control group, which consisted of 32 healthy children in the same age range as the trial group but who did not have COVID-19.

Splenectomy is indicated in transfusion-dependent thalassemia (TDT) only in certain situations. This study aimed to present the effectiveness, complications, and long-term follow-up results of splenectomy in children with TDT. We performed a 30-year single-institution analysis of cases of splenectomy for TDT between 1987 and 2017 and their follow-up until 2021.

In this study, we report our experience with the use of external loop recorders (ELRs), in terms of diagnostic efficiency according to symptoms and symptom-rhythm correlation in pediatric patients. We evaluated ELRs applied to 178 patients between April 2017 and November 2020 at our center. The mean age of 172 patients included in the study was 13.

Objectives: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), a chronic pathology that affects many organ systems, appears after dysregulated immune response in genetically predisposed patients. Inner organ involvement has been shown in various autoimmune diseases because of its immunosensitivity. In this study, we aimed at showing sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) as a result of possible subclinical inflammation in patients with IBD during the remission period.

The newest development in sentinel lymph node imaging is portable gamma probe imaging. In this case report, results of all SLN detection methods were analyzed. The patient was imaged using a large field-of-view gamma camera with additional blue dye administration and intraoperative localization of sentinel lymph node using both gamma probe and portable gamma camera was performed.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study explored how geographical differences impact the clinical presentation and surgical outcomes of patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (pHPT) across three regions: Black Sea, Mediterranean, and Anatolia.
  • - Data from 694 patients across 23 centers indicated that the median age was 54, with 25% being asymptomatic; significant variations emerged in preoperative symptoms, serum calcium levels, and adenoma sizes depending on the region.
  • - Findings suggest that environmental factors related to different habitats influence the clinicopathological characteristics of pHPT patients, with South-East Anatolia showing all symptomatic patients, while Bulgaria had the largest adenoma sizes and highest calcium levels.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to assess the effects of preemptive and preclosure analgesia on postoperative pain intensity in patients undergoing different levels of laparoscopic surgery.

Methods: Two hundred and twenty-six patients who underwent laparoscopic gynecological surgery were enrolled in this quasi-randomized, prospective, placebo controlled study. The operations were classified as level 1 or level 2 according to the extent of the surgery.

Radio-guided localization (RGL) for identifying occult breast lesions has been widely accepted as an alternative technique to other localization methods, including those using wire guidance. An appropriate phantom model would be an invaluable tool for practitioners interested in learning the technique of RGL prior to clinical application. The aim of this study was to devise an inexpensive and reproducible training phantom model for RGL.

Objective: Fetal echocardiography (FE) is considered for fetal, maternal or hereditary reasons in pregnants with suspect of intrauterine heart disease (IUHD). However, in few studies it was reported that most of the fetuses with IUHD are in the low-risk group (suspicion of IUHD during 2nd trimester ultrasound, lack of good vision of the heart, self-referral). Our aim is to examine retrospectively the reasons for referral of pregnants, the results of FE, distribution of pregnants having fetuses with IUHD according to low- and high- risk factors and to evaluate reliability of FE.

Our objective was to determine the factors that affect (i) the rectal-axillary temperature measurement difference (RATD) for digital and mercury-in-glass thermometers and (ii) the difference between mercury-in-glass and digital thermometer readings taken by the rectal and axillary routes. Children (between the ages of 2 and 48 months) who were admitted to Hacettepe University Children Hospital and Corum Children's Hospital in 2 months period were included in this study. Two measurements were taken from each patient within 2 days at two different occasions including day/night and sleep/awake by the same physician.

Objective: This prospective randomized clinical trial was conducted to evaluate the necessity of drainage after total thyroidectomy or lobectomy for benign thyroidal disorders.

Methods: A total of 116 patients who underwent total thyroidectomy or lobectomy for benign thyroidal disorders were randomly allocated to be drained or not. Operative and postoperative outcomes including operating time, postoperative pain assessed by visual analogue scale (VAS), total amount of intramuscular analgesic administration, hospital stay, complications, necessity for re-operation and satisfaction of patients were all assessed.

Despite the demonstrated benefits of influenza vaccinations, the coverage is lower than expected among health-care personnel (HCP). In this study we surveyed the attitudes of pediatric residents regarding influenza immunization and adverse reactions. Forty-five female and 35 male pediatric residents with ages ranging from 24 to 28 years were vaccinated with an influenza vaccine on 2 days in the 3rd week of September 2005 by the same nurse.

This study evaluated the bond strength of resin composite to dentin, mediated by a self-etching adhesive, following the application of various dentin desensitizing treatments and artificial saliva storage. The buccal cervical areas of 24 extracted human third molars were ground flat to expose cervical dentin. The dentin surfaces were polished with 1200-grit SiC paper, then the teeth were randomly assigned to six groups, five desensitizing treatments and one control: Group I-VivaSens; Group II-Fluor Protector; Group III-Isodan; Group IV-Futura Bond NR; Group V-Nd:YAG laser and Group VI-Control (without application of a desensitizing agent).

Background: We aimed to investigate the potential protective effect of remote ischemic preconditioning (IPC) on delayed colonic anastomotic healing induced by remote ischemia and reperfusion (I/R) injury.

Materials And Methods: Forty male Wistar rats were randomly assigned into four groups, each consisting of 10 rats: the control group (C), the remote I/R group [I/R, 40 min of superior mesenteric artery (SMA) occlusion], the preconditioned I/R group (IPC, two cycles of 5 min temporary occlusion of SMA before an ischemic insult of 40 min), and the preconditioned group (PC, two cycles of 5 min temporary occlusion of SMA). Colonic anastomosis was performed immediately after the ischemic insult.

Infants with cystic fibrosis can develop episodes of hyponatremic, hypochloremic dehydration with metabolic alkalosis, and management is difficult. In this paper, we present a nine-month-old case with cystic fibrosis with pseudo-Bartter syndrome, who was rehydrated with two types of modified oral rehydration solution. Intravenous rehydration was impossible due to inaccessibility of route.
