Study Design: A fused deposition modeling three-dimensional (3D)-printed model of the L4-5 vertebra for lumbar discectomy was designed. The model included separately printed dura mater, spinal cord, ligamentum flavum, intervertebral disc (from thermoplastic polyurethane), and bony structures (from polylactic acid), and the material cost approximately US$ 1 per model. A simple plumbing endoscope was used for visualization.

Comparison of mid-term clinical and radiological results of short and conventional femoral stems in total hip arthroplasty.

This study aims to answer the question: Which are superior-conventional or short femoral stems?. An Optymis stem was used as a short-femoral stem, and an Accolade II stem was used as a conventional-femoral stem. There were 95 patients in the short femoral stem group (Group 1) and 90 in the conventional stem group (Group 2).

Orbital Cerebrospinal Fluid Leak After Dog Bite: A Case Report.

A 4-year-old boy was referred to our tertiary hospital after a penetrating adnexal injury by a large-breed dog to the left orbital area. There was an increase in lacrimation, which was thought to be due to an inflammatory reaction. However, it was discovered that the lacrimation increased in the reverse-Trendelenburg position and with the Valsalva maneuver.

PsiNorm: A fast, efficient and free open-source software for interpreting, reporting and archiving neuropsychological test results.

Objective: In many clinics, calculation and interpretation of neuropsychological test results, along with reporting, data organization and archiving of the data are done manually. In this era where most of the similar processes are automated, manual application may result in excessive time consumption, unnecessary use of qualified work-force, and is also open to error. A software that automates these processes for neuropsychological tests used for dementia assessment may overcome these issues.

The debates on the sustainability of development have a long history. Although the Brundtland Report popularized "sustainable development", this slippery concept sidelined previous critiques of development and has been compatible with a wide range of conflicting agendas. A notable example of this contradiction is the uncritical promotion of capitalist growth in the pursuit of social justice and ecosystem health by the sustainable development goals.

Comparison of infants and children with urolithiasis: a large case series.

We evaluated the demographic features, etiologic risk factors, treatment strategies, and outcome of the infants and children with urolithiasis (UL). A retrospective multicenter study was conducted including 23 Pediatric Nephrology centers in Turkey. The medical records of 2513 children with UL were reviewed.

Carvacrol Enhances the Antimicrobial Potency of Berberine in Bacillus subtilis.

The essential oil carvacrol from oregano displays a wide range of biological activities among which is found the inhibition of efflux pumps. Thus, using carvacrol, the current work undertook the effort to potentiate the antimicrobial activity of berberine, a natural product with limited antimicrobial efficacy due to its efflux. Following the selection of concentrations for the combinatorial treatments, guided by checkerboard microtiter plate assay and growth experiments, ethidium bromide accumulation assay was used to find that 25 μg mL carvacrol displayed a weak efflux pump inhibitor character in Bacillus subtilis.

Ahmed glaucoma valve implantation with the tube placement in the ciliary sulcus: short-term results.

Purpose: To evaluate the clinical outcomes of pseudophakic/aphakic eyes with uncontrolled glaucoma that underwent Ahmed glaucoma valve implantation with the tube placement in the ciliary sulcus.

Methods: Medical records of the patients who underwent Ahmed glaucoma valve implantation through the ciliary sulcus, between December 2017 and June 2019, were reviewed retrospectively. Patients' age, gender, glaucoma diagnosis, visual acuity, intraocular pressure levels, and complications were recorded.

Evaluation of neonatal acute kidney injury after critical congenital heart disease surgery.

Background: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common complication of congenital heart diseases (CHDs) after cardiac surgery. This study aimed to define the frequency and critical course, risk factors and short-term outcomes of AKI in postoperative CHD neonates.

Methods: Postoperatively followed term CHD newborn infants were enrolled in the study.

TNF-α Inhibitors for the Management of Intractable Corneal Melt: Report of Three Cases and Review of the Literature.

Objective: To report three consecutive cases with noninfectious corneal melting, whose disease progression could only be halted with tumor necrosis-α (TNF-α) inhibitor infusion, with a review of the relevant literature.

Materials And Methods: Patients with toxic epidermal necrolysis, severe alkaline burn, and Sjögren syndrome had experienced severe corneal melting following penetrating keratoplasty, Boston type 1 keratoprosthesis implantation or spontaneously, respectively. Topical autologous serum eye-drops, medroxyprogesterone, and acetylcysteine formulations; frequent nonpreserved lubrication; systemic tetracyclines and vitamin-C supplements; topical and systemic steroids and steroid-sparing agents; surgical approaches including amniotic membrane transplantation, tectonic graft surgery; and tarsorraphy failed to alter the disease courses.

A method for the quantitative determination of glycerophospholipid regioisomers by UPLC-ESI-MS/MS.

Diacyl glycerophospholipids (GPs) belong to the most abundant lipid species in living organisms and consist of a glycerol backbone with fatty acyl groups in sn-1 and sn-2 and a polar head group in the sn-3 position. Regioisomeric mixed diacyl GPs have the same fatty acyl composition but differ in their allocation to sn-1 or sn-2 of the glycerol unit. In-depth analysis of regioisomeric mixed diacyl GP species composed of fatty acyl moieties that are similar in length and degree of saturation typically requires either chemical derivatization or sophisticated analytical instrumentation, since these types of regioisomers are not well resolved under standard ultra-performance liquid chromatography (UPLC) conditions.

Membrane Active Peptides and Their Biophysical Characterization.

In the last 20 years, an increasing number of studies have been reported on membrane active peptides. These peptides exert their biological activity by interacting with the cell membrane, either to disrupt it and lead to cell lysis or to translocate through it to deliver cargos into the cell and reach their target. Membrane active peptides are attractive alternatives to currently used pharmaceuticals and the number of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) and peptides designed for drug and gene delivery in the drug pipeline is increasing.

The effect of a beta-lactamase inhibitor peptide on bacterial membrane structure and integrity: a comparative study.

Co-administration of beta-lactam antibiotics and beta-lactamase inhibitors has been a favored treatment strategy against beta-lactamase-mediated bacterial antibiotic resistance, but the emergence of beta-lactamases resistant to current inhibitors necessitates the discovery of novel non-beta-lactam inhibitors. Peptides derived from the Ala46-Tyr51 region of the beta-lactamase inhibitor protein are considered as potent inhibitors of beta-lactamase; unfortunately, peptide delivery into the cell limits their potential. The properties of cell-penetrating peptides could guide the design of beta-lactamase inhibitory peptides.

Proteomics Evidence for the Activity of the Putative Antibacterial Plant Alkaloid (-)-Roemerine: Mainstreaming Omics-Guided Drug Discovery.

Discovery of new antibacterials with novel mechanisms is important to counteract the ingenious resistance mechanisms of bacteria. In this connection, omics-guided drug discovery offers a rigorous method in the quest of new antibacterials. (-)-Roemerine is a plant alkaloid that has been reported to possess putative antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, and Salmonella typhimurium.

A novel chimeric peptide with antimicrobial activity.

Beta-lactamase-mediated bacterial drug resistance exacerbates the prognosis of infectious diseases, which are sometimes treated with co-administration of beta-lactam type antibiotics and beta-lactamase inhibitors. Antimicrobial peptides are promising broad-spectrum alternatives to conventional antibiotics in this era of evolving bacterial resistance. Peptides based on the Ala46-Tyr51 beta-hairpin loop of beta-lactamase inhibitory protein (BLIP) have been previously shown to inhibit beta-lactamase.

Etomidate is associated with longer seizure duration, lower stimulus intensity, and lower number of failed trials in electroconvulsive therapy compared with thiopental.

Objective: Induction agents used for electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) may alter seizure parameters. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effects of etomidate and thiopental on seizure-related variables.

Methods: Registries of patients who received ECT between 2010 and 2013 in a tertiary psychiatry clinic were evaluated retrospectively.

Rather than applications solely in personalized medicine, omics science thus additionally offers a better understanding of a broader range of drug targets and drug repositioning. Berberine is an isoquinoline alkaloid found in many medicinal plants.

Interplay of adaptive capabilities of Halomonas sp. AAD12 under salt stress.

In the present study, osmoadaptive mechanism of Halomonas sp. AAD12 was studied through analysis of changes in its proteome maps and osmolyte accumulation strategy to understand how this euryhaline microorganism masters osmotic stress of saline environments. Under salt stress, there were significant variations in the expression of proteins involved in osmoregulation, stress response, energy generation and transport.

Characteristics of venous insufficiency in western Turkey: VEYT-I study.

Objectives: Syndromes of venous hypertension and reduced venous clearance are important causes of morbidity and disability in patients with varicose venous disease. Published estimates of the prevalence of varicosities range from 7% to 55% in the adult population, with most studies demonstrating clinical varicose reflux in about 40% of the population where the frequency of venous insufficiency is believed to be higher in Westernized and industrialized nations, most likely due to differences in lifestyle and activity. Unfortunately, the prevalence in a Turkish population is not known.

Proteomic insight into phenolic adaptation of a moderately halophilic Halomonas sp. strain AAD12.

A gram-negative, moderately halophilic bacterium was isolated from Çamaltı Saltern area, located in the Aegean Region of Turkey. Analysis of its 16S rRNA gene sequence and physiological characteristics showed that this strain belonged to the genus Halomonas ; hence, it was designated as Halomonas sp. strain AAD12.

Calcium dobesilate and oxerutin: effectiveness of combination therapy.

Objectives: Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) is an important cause of discomfort and inability to work.
