The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of hydroxyapatite (HAp) coating on Guglielmi detachable coils (GDCs) in an experimental aneurysm model. A total of 12 aneurysms were experimentally made in the common carotid arteries of swine using a microsurgical technique. Embolization was done on these aneurysms using standard GDCs and GDCs coated with HAp (GDC-HAp).

gamma-Ray irradiation of chitosan flakes and introduction of hydrophobic chains onto hydroxyl groups are discussed. At 25 kGy, chain degradation without cross-linking reduces the molecular weight to one-fourth; however, structural characterization by FT-IR, 1H NMR, and 13C CP/MAS NMR indicates that the saccharide units are maintained. Introduction of hydrophobic chains is accomplished by introduction of alkylamine groups onto the chitosan carbonyl imidazole precursor.

The internal pores of the silica were filled with PNIPAAm gel to give a thermo-responsive drug reservoir. Brilliant blue FCF (BB) was also added to the hybrid gels for release.

L929 cell adhesion on various lipid films prepared by Langmuir-Blodgett methods (LB method) were studied. L929 cells adhered to every lipid film similar to tissue culture poly(styrene) (TCPS). The mRNA expression of both collagen and HSP47 in adherent cells were evaluated by the RT-PCR method.

The effects of molecular weight and molar ratio of monomeric unit/Pt on the particle sizes and size distributions were characterized by transmission electron microscopy and UV-visible spectroscopy. The flocculation behavior of the polymer-stabilized colloidal Pt nanoparticles was studied with respect to the effects of temperature, addition of inorganic salts, and composition of the mixed solvents.

The development of a dosage form that improves the absorption of peptide and protein drugs via the gastrointestinal tract is one of the greatest challenges in the pharmaceutical field. Many researchers have taken up the challenge, using approaches including mucoadhesive drug delivery, colon delivery, particulate drug delivery such as nanoparticles, microcapsules, liposomes, emulsions, micelles, and so on. The objective of this article is to provide the reader with outlines of novel nanoparticle technologies for oral peptide delivery based on polymer chemistry.

As substrates, materials of hydrophilic nature (cellulose, poly(acrylamide)-grafted poly(ethylene) (PAAm-g-PE), and lipids films) were used. The contemporary assay method for NF-kappaB was modified to fit our system.

No prominent acute injury was detected except for leukocytopenia (800 mm(-3)) and thrombocytopenia (15,000 mm(-3)). Three years later, the first, second, and third fingers presented repeated infection and started to develop contracture.

TNF-alpha induced expression of p21(WAF1)at protein and mRNA levels in a dose-dependent fashion with an association with G(1)-arrest in human colon cancer cells WiDr that carry mutated p53 at codon 273 (His(273)). However, TNF-alpha did not affect the levels of the Bax protein, which also has p53-binding sites on its promoter and causes apoptosis.

The present study focused on the apatite coating on hydrophilic polymer grafted poly(ethylene) (PE) films with various grafting densities and commonly used hydrophilic polymers, poly(acryl amide) (PAAm) and poly(acrylic acid) (PAAc) were employed. From X-ray diffraction analysis, hydroxyapatite was coated on PAAm- or PAAc- grafted PE films.

In this study, we attempted to detect altered gene expressions in the cells that had adhered to various surfaces using the differential display method. Thioglycollate-elicited peritoneal exudate cells (PEC) and mouse fibroblast (L929) cells were cultured on the polymer films. After a predetermined time, the total RNA was isolated from cells and the differential mRNA expressions were evaluated by RT-PCR method.

Exposure to IL-1 caused induction of p21(WAF1) protein in high-passage WI38 cells but not in early-passage cells. However, IL-1 did not stimulate the transcription of a CAT-reporter gene having two copies of the p53-responsive element on its promoter or the p53-binding capacity of nuclear extracts, although it increased transcriptional rate of p21(WAF1) in these high-passage cells.

The characteristics of deposited apatite were studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometry (FTIR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Apatite weight increased with alternating soaking in a calcium solution [200 mM aqueous calcium chloride solution buffered with tris(hydroxymethyl) aminomethane and HCl (pH 7.

We discovered that ANA in saline/ethanol solution and in serum was efficiently adsorbed in a polymyxin B (PMB)-immobilized beads column and eluted with ethanol. We confirmed the direct binding of PMB to ANA by using surface plasmon resonance.

The SCN and the periphery may use different entraining signals-light and some humoral factors, respectively. We show that induction of the circadian oscillation of gene expression is triggered by TPA treatment of NIH-3T3 fibroblasts, which is inhibited by a MEK inhibitor, and that prolonged activation of the MAPK cascade is sufficient to trigger circadian gene expression.

Irradiation increases the generation of reactive oxygen intermediates, including hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)). Myeloperoxidase (MPO), a heme-containing glycoprotein located in the primary granules of polymorphonuclear leukocytes and monocytes, reacts with H(2)O(2) and halide ion and produces a more potent microbicidal oxidant, hypochlorous acid (HOCl). Human HL60 promyelocytes constitutively had high levels of MPO protein and mRNA.

The affinity constant of recombinant human soluble TM (rhs-TM) and a peptide containing active site of hTM fragment (f-hTM) with thrombin were determined using the surface plasmon resonance. The interaction of f-hTM with thrombin could be analyzed by a simple model, whereas the association and the dissociation steps of rhs-TM with thrombin consisted of at least two kinds of interaction phases.

Silk fabric was modified with polymethacryloyloxyethylphosphate (pMOEP) by graft copolymerization. Ca-adsorption onto pMOEP-grafted silk fabric was significantly enhanced compared to that onto original silk fabric. SEM observation indicated that some crystallites were deposited on the pMOEP-grafted silk fabric after 1 week of immersion in simulated body fluid, whereas no change occurred on the surface of the original silk fabric.
