The reported incidence of adenomyosis based on unselected hysterectomies varies so widely that conclusions regarding the influence of any factor on that incidence are difficult to reach, although the relation of adenomyosis uteri to endometrial carcinoma has been the subject of only a few studies. In a 5-year period at the General Hospital of Athens, 646 hysterectomies were performed. All data were retrieved from the surgical pathology laboratory files concerning adenomyosis uteri with either simultaneous endometrial carcinoma or endometrial hyperplasia.

The effectiveness of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), dimethyl sulphoxide (DMSO) and allopurinol in prevention of peritoneal adhesion formation induced by complete vascular obstruction and reperfusion of an ileal segment was investigated in rats. The ischaemic period was 30 min. Group A (n = 20) were controls, group B (n = 15) received SOD 15,000 U/kg i.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined the impact of oxygen-derived free radicals on stomach damage caused by haemorrhagic shock and the protective effects of scavengers like allopurinol and ranitidine.
  • Forty-five rabbits were subjected to a 30-minute haemorrhagic shock followed by blood reinfusion, and their gastric health was evaluated post-treatment.
  • Results showed that while all control animals had gastric lesions, those pre-treated with scavengers had significantly smaller lesions, highlighting the protective role of oxygen radical antagonists.
