Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) is the most reliable and most frequently used procedure to evaluate audiological conditions in early infancy. However, several reports have demonstrated that developmental change in the central nervous system may affect the results of ABR in audiological evaluations. We examined statistically the reliability of ABR for the diagnosis of profound deafness in early childhood according to our experience over the past 12 years of follow-up in our facility.

Objective: To clarify the cause of this rare complication and recommend methods for preventing its recurrence.
Summary Of Background Data: Several cases of central retinal artery occlusion after posterior spinal surgery have been reported, but there has been no reported case of external iliac artery occlusion after posterior spinal surgery.
We report herein on the follow-up of ten consecutive patients who underwent perineal rectosigmoidectomy, and discuss the indications, surgical technique, and outcomes of this procedure. The median age of the patients was 79 years, with a range of 26 to 85 years, and eight patients had complicating medical conditions. Of five patients who underwent this procedure for a recurrent prolapse after another type of perineal procedure, four had previously undergone the Thiersch operation combined with the Gant-Miwa technique.

Two of these patients had recurrent liver cysts, which were resistant to simple laparoscopic fenestration. After the combination therapy, none of the cysts recurred during follow-up periods ranging from 11 to 33 months.

The purpose of this study was to assess the point at which the postoperative infection has occurred in order to decide upon the proper duration of prophylactic antibiotic use. Another goal of this study was to determine whether prediction for the development of postoperative infections in major surgery such as esophagectomy should be the same as that in routine gastroenterological surgery. Twenty-five patients who underwent transthoracic esophagectomy and 127 patients who underwent gastrectomy were studied.

The average age at surgery and at final follow-up was 14 (5-26) months and 15 (13-20) years, respectively. Hips with a CE angle above 20 degrees and femoral head coverage above 75 degrees at the final follow-up were classified as "satisfactory outcome".

The aim of the present study was to systematically investigate the types and frequencies of laparoscopically observed congenital anomalies of the liver.
Methods: We studied congenital anomalies observed laparoscopically in 1802 consecutive patients who underwent laparoscopy from 1981 to 1994.
Dose effect of inhibin antiserum on ovarian response and hormonal profiles were investigated. On day 12 of the estrous cycle (day 0 = estrus), 14 of 19 cows were given a single i.v.

The average follow-up period after synovectomy was 15 years, ranging from 10 to 25 years. The clinical evaluation at the time of follow-up, found that only two ankles showed recurrence of synovitis, and no patient complained of severe ankle pain disturbing the activities of daily life.

Methods: Interferon-alpha receptor mRNA was quantified by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction using liver biopsies from 40 patients, comprising 20 responders and 20 non-responders to subsequent interferon therapy.
Results: The amount of interferon-alpha receptor mRNA was significantly larger in interferon-responders (0.
A 29-year-old woman was hospitalized with a 1-month history of postprandial epigastric pain, nausea, and vomiting. An upper gastrointestinal tract X-ray series showed a marked narrowing of the pyloric region. A histological examination of duodenal mucosal biopsy samples showed granulomatous inflammation, and thus a diagnosis of intrinsic duodenal Crohn's disease was made.

IFN-alpha Rc mRNA was investigated by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) in liver biopsies and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from 40 patients with HCV-associated CLD who subsequently received IFN-alpha therapy. IFN-alpha Rc mRNA in the liver was detected in 18 of 20 (90%) responders to IFN and in 5 of 20 (25%) non-responders (P < 0.

Before IFN treatment, IL-2, TNF-beta, IFN-gamma and IL-8 mRNA were associated with severe hepatitis activity whereas IL-4 mRNA was associated with weak hepatitis activity, regardless of IFN response. IL-2, TNF-beta and IFN-gamma mRNAs were significantly greater in IFN non-responders.

In normal myelinated axons, weak synapsin I immunoreactivity was found in the axoplasmic/smooth endoplasmic domains, but not in the cytoskeletal domains comprising neurofilaments and microtubules. In non-myelinated axons without dense cytoskeletal structures, moderate immunoreactivity was distributed diffusely throughout the axoplasm.

The aim of this study was to reconfirm whether the HBV with the X gene mutation is associated with these serologically "silent" non-B, non-C (NBNC) chronic hepatitis, alcoholic liver disease (ALD) and autoimmune hepatitis (AIH). HBV DNA was amplified from serum and sequenced in 30 patients with NBNC chronic hepatitis in comparison with 20 patients with ALD and 5 patients with AIH.

We have retrospectively determined the preoperative risk factors in cervical radiculopathy after laminoplasty for cervical myelopathy using preoperative neuroradiographical findings and electrophysiological studies. Of the 67 patients who underwent laminoplasty, 10 patients (14.9%) postoperatively showed cervical radioculopathy.

To investigate whether defects in the X protein might be responsible for this difference in the level of viral replication, nucleotide sequences of X and precore gene regions in serum HBV were analyzed in 19 ASCs and 9 CAH patients. All patients had a point mutation creating a stop codon in the precore region.

To investigate the hypothesis that Th1 phenotype cytokines are associated with the increasing activity of hepatitis and Th2 phenotype cytokines with decreasing activity in the liver of chronic viral hepatitis, expressions of the mRNA of the cytokines IL-2, IFN-gamma and IL-4 in the liver of 23 patients with chronic hepatitis B were investigated by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. Patients were divided into three groups according to the phase of acute exacerbation of hepatitis as increasing (n = 9), decreasing (n = 8), and stable phase (n = 6). Both IL-2 and IFN-gamma mRNA were preferentially expressed in increasing phase than in decreasing phase (P < 0.
