The COVID-19 pandemic had a major impact on healthcare systems across the world. In the United Kingdom, one of the strategies used by hospitals to cope with the surge in patients infected with SARS-Cov-2 was to cancel a vast number of elective treatments planned and limit its resources for non-critical patients. This resulted in a 30% drop in the number of people joining the waiting list in 2020-2021 versus 2019-2020.

The COVID-19 global pandemic has rapidly expanded, with the UK being one of the countries with the highest number of cases and deaths in proportion to its population. Major clinical and human behavioural measures have been taken by the UK government to control the spread of the pandemic and to support the health system. The analysis demonstrated a strong correlation (R > 0.7) between increment in air pollution and an increase in the risk of COVID-19 transmission within London boroughs.
