This study investigated the neuromodulatory potential of zinc against acrylamide-induced cognitive impairment. Acrylamide (AA), a toxic substance commonly found in certain foods such as potato, grains and coffee, is known to cause neurological damage and severe cognitive decline. Twenty (20) male Wistar rats were divided into four groups (n = 5) by random selection.

Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a significant health issue affecting the quality of life including male reproductive functions. Orange peel ethanolic extract (OPEE) has been established to have antioxidant properties and has been shown to alleviate diabetic complications. This study determined to establish OPEE effect and physical exercise (EX) in T2DM-induced testicular dysfunction

Materials And Methods: Thirty male Wistar rats were randomly distributed in five groups as follows: control group (received 1 ml/b.

Background: Sodium Benzoate (SB) is used in daily products such as drinks, juices, sauces, oils, ketchup, toothpaste, mouthwashes, cosmetics, dentifrices, and pharmaceutical products. However, SB has been implicated in gonadotoxicity even at a dosage within the safe limit. Zinc (Zn), on the other hand, has been shown to improve various fertility indices.

Background: Acrylamide is a toxic substance formed in some foods that require high-temperature cooking processes and has been implicated as a gonadotoxic agent. Zinc, on the other hand, is a known antioxidant with fertility-enhancing properties. Hence, this study was designed to explore the possible ameliorative effect of zinc in acrylamide-induced gonadotoxicity.

Objectives: Male infertility is a major public health issue due to increased prevalence, so there is an urgent need for a therapeutic solution. The search for a natural dietary substance that could modulate redox balance and inflammation and protect testicular function is in demand. Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) has found use in the treatment of diabetes, and cancer owing to the presence of polyphenols.

Background And Aims: Hypertension is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular complications. The effect of systemic hypertension on the right ventricle (RV) has received less attention probably due to its complex structure and location. The aim of the study was to assess the effect of systemic hypertension on the structure and function of the right ventricle using transthoracic echocardiography.

Article Synopsis
  • Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) can negatively impact testicular function, and this study aimed to examine the effects of naringin, a compound from orange peel, on T2DM-related testicular dysfunction in male Wistar rats.
  • The results showed that naringin reduced high blood sugar levels and improved sperm quality, hormones, and antioxidant capacity, while also decreasing markers of oxidative stress and inflammation.
  • The findings suggest that naringin could be a beneficial supplement for addressing male infertility caused by T2DM, even though oral orange peel extract had a more pronounced effect.

Semen analysis has been used for a long time to assess male fertility due to its limitations sperm DNA fragmentation index (DFI), which describes the sperm DNA's condition, is an appropriate criterion for assessing male fertility. This study evaluated the pattern and value of DFI of infertile men in the South West of Nigeria. This is a cross-sectional and descriptive study that recruited two hundred and eighty-seven (287) patients from two fertility centers in Lagos, Nigeria.

This study investigated the effects of 6-gingerol-rich fraction of Zingiber officinale (6-GIRIFZO) on mercury chloride (HgCl)-induced neurotoxicity in Wistar rats. Thirty -five male Wistar rats weighing between (150-200 g) were divided randomly into five groups (n = 7): group 1: control, received 0.5 mL of normal saline, group 2: received HgCl (5 mg/kg), group 3: received N-acetylcysteine (NAC) (50 mg/kg) as well as HgCl (5 mg/kg), group 4: received 6-GIRIFZO (100 mg/kg) and HgCl (5 mg/kg), group 5: had 6-GIRIFZO (200 mg/kg) and HgCl (5 mg/kg), consecutively for 14 days.

Objective: Doxorubicin (DOX) is a frontline antineoplastic drug that kills cancer cells through genotoxic mechanism; however, it induces organ toxicities. This study assayed whether morin hydrate (MOH) could abrogate DOX hepatorenal toxicity in rats.

Materials And Methods: There were 4 groups of rats: Control, MOH, DOX and MOH + DOX.

The regulation of the p53 tumor suppressor pathway is critically dependent on the activity of Murine Double Minute 2 (MDM2) and Murine Double Minute X (MDMX) proteins. In certain types of cancer cells, excessive amount of MDMX can poly-ubiquitinate p53, which can result in its degradation, leading to a subsequent reduction in the levels of this protein. Therefore, the design of small-molecule inhibitors targeting the MDMX-p53 interaction has emerged as a promising strategy for cancer therapy.

Introduction: paraoxonase 1 (PON1) is a high-density lipoprotein (HDL) associated enzyme that has anti-inflammatory, anti-atherogenic, and antioxidant functions. PON1 is noted to be a determinant of resistance to the development of atherosclerosis through hydrolysis of phospholipid and cholesteryl ester hydroperoxides. This study was designed to assess PON1 activity levels among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in Southwest Nigeria.

Introduction: Psychiatric and cognitive impairment has been observed in premenopausal women with a hormonal disorder called polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). This study aimed to explore the possibility of combining pharmacological agents: Carvedilol and Clomiphene citrate, with antiestrogenic, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties in letrozole-induced PCOS rats.

Methods: PCOS was induced in rats by the administration of letrozole (1 mg/kg) daily for 21 days.

Context: As a member of a large family of proteins that together regulate various aspects of cell growth and development, the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) is a validated target for the development of new drugs. Herein, we compiled a library of 62 compounds from the PubChem database with similar pharmacophores as osimertinib, which to our knowledge represents the only drug capable of overcoming EGFR-T790M-mutated NSCLC until date. Subsequently, we launched a docking-based virtual screening campaign against the EGFR kinase with the compiled chemical entities.

Article Synopsis
  • Advances in surgical techniques have increased the safety of thyroidectomy, but voice changes remain a significant concern, which this study addressed by evaluating patients undergoing surgery for non-malignant goiters in Nigeria.* -
  • The study involved preoperative assessments of voice and laryngeal status, with postoperative evaluations at 1 week, 1 month, and 3 months, revealing that 18.5% of patients experienced early voice changes after the operation.* -
  • While most voice changes were temporary—returning to baseline in five of the ten cases by three months—abnormal preoperative findings were linked to a higher risk of these postoperative voice changes.*
