Background/objective: Rheumatic diseases (RMDs) are among the leading health burdens and causes of disability globally. Interestingly, they are on the rise due to the increasingly ageing population. Inflammatory RMDs are not left behind in the rise, especially in Africa, where they were thought to be rare as there has been increasing reportage of these diseases in recent years.

At a more stringent level, the molecular docking challenge entails predicting the accurate bound association state based on the atomic coordinates of two molecules.

A scoping review of reporting gaps in FDA-approved AI medical devices.

Machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI/ML) models in healthcare may exacerbate health biases. Regulatory oversight is critical in evaluating the safety and effectiveness of AI/ML devices in clinical settings. We conducted a scoping review on the 692 FDA-approved AI/ML-enabled medical devices approved from 1995-2023 to examine transparency, safety reporting, and sociodemographic representation.

Management of bone health in idiopathic inflammatory myopathies: A two-center audit in the United Kingdom and Hong Kong.

We sought to establish the spectrum of structural valvular abnormalities as cardiovascular involvement has been identified as the most life-threatening aspect of the syndrome. This was a systematic review with a meta-analysis of studies indexed in Medline from the inception of the database to November 7, 2022.

Methods: A cross-sectional survey involving 609 family physicians from all six geopolitical zones of Nigeria was conducted in October 2022.

Introduction: Ischemic strokes and their recurrence create an immense disease burden globally. Therefore, preventing recurrent strokes by promoting medication adherence is crucial to reduce morbidity and mortality. In addition, understanding the barriers to medication adherence related to the social determinants of health (SDoH) could promote equity among persons with ischemic stroke.

Using ChatGPT in Medical Research: Current Status and Future Directions.

Objective: This review aims to evaluate the current evidence on the use of the Generative Pre-trained Transformer (ChatGPT) in medical research, including but not limited to treatment, diagnosis, or medication provision.

Methods: This review follows the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. We searched Google Scholar, Web of Science, PubMed, and Medline to identify studies published between 2022 and 2023 that aimed to utilize ChatGPT in medical research.

An international survey of current management practices for polymyalgia rheumatica by general practitioners and rheumatologists.

Objectives: To explore current management practices for PMR by general practitioners (GPs) and rheumatologists including implications for clinical trial recruitment.

Methods: An English language questionnaire was constructed by a working group of rheumatologists and GPs from six countries. The questionnaire focused on: 1: Respondent characteristics; 2: Referral practices; 3: Treatment with glucocorticoids; 4: Diagnostics; 5: Comorbidities; and 6: Barriers to research.

Near-Fatal Acute Myocardial Infarction in a Young Patient With Occlusive Coronary Artery Disease.

Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) due to obstructive coronary artery disease in young patients is an unusual event. Its clinical pattern somewhat differs from that of elderly patients, thus placing them at an increased risk of misdiagnosis, as this young population typically does not demonstrate the traditional risk factors associated with cardiovascular disease. We report the case of a 35-year-old man who presented with new-onset chest pain leading to cardiac arrest and was found to have 100% occlusion of the left anterior descending (LAD) coronary artery, which was successfully managed with the placement of a drug-eluting stent.

A survey of the use of tourniquet among orthopaedic surgeons in Nigeria.

Background: The modern arterial tourniquet is an automatic tourniquet system which contains many features that help to minimise complications and improve safety. However, the non-pneumatic tourniquet is still in use, a practice that may be commoner in resource-constrained settings. This study was conducted to investigate the types of tourniquet available and used by orthopaedic surgeons in Nigeria as well as the practical aspects and complications of their use of the tourniquet.

Microbiota regulate innate immune signaling and protective immunity against cancer.

Microbiota play critical roles in regulating colitis and colorectal cancer (CRC). However, it is unclear how the microbiota generate protective immunity against these disease states. Here, we find that loss of the innate and adaptive immune signaling molecule, TAK1, in myeloid cells (Tak1) yields complete resistance to chemical-induced colitis and CRC through microbiome alterations that drive protective immunity.

Mechanical circulatory support in paediatric population.

Extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation is a life-saving modality to support the cardiac and/or pulmonary system as a form of life support in resuscitation, post-cardiotomy, as a bridge to cardiac transplantation and in respiratory failure. Its use in the paediatric and neonatal population has proven incredibly useful. However, extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation is also associated with a greater rate of mortality and complications, particularly in those with co-morbidities.

Background: Emerging infectious diseases pose a great hazard to public health and the global economy. A novel coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, causing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), emerged from Wuhan, China, in December 2019. Since then, it has spread globally causing a global health emergency of inconceivable magnitude, with significant morbidity and mortality.

Takayasu's Arteritis Presenting Atypically in a Female Nigerian.

Takayasu's arteritis (TA) is an idiopathic form of large vessel granulomatous vasculitis that mainly affects the aorta and its major branches, most frequently in young women under 50 years. While traditionally, it is a disease found commonly in Asia continent, it has also been reported from different parts of the world, albeit with a few reports from Sub-Sahara Africa. The clinical presentations are variable and are commonly from systemic inflammation, vascular occlusive diseases and aneurysm.
