Context: Although the hypoglycaemic effect of has been documented, reports on its effect in an apparently healthy state are limited.

Objective: This study investigated whether or not exerts hypoglycaemic effect in a non-diabetic state. It also explored the impact of on glycolytic enzymes and GLUT 4 protein expression, as a possible mode of action.

Astrocytes have been implicated in oligodendrocyte development and myelination, however, the mechanisms by which astrocytes regulate oligodendrocytes remain unclear. Our findings suggest a new mechanism that regulates astrocyte-mediated oligodendrocyte development through ephrin-B1 signaling in astrocytes. Using a mouse model, we examined the role of astrocytic ephrin-B1 signaling in oligodendrocyte development by deleting ephrin-B1 specifically in astrocytes during the postnatal days (P)14-P28 period and used mRNA analysis, immunohistochemistry, and mouse behaviors to study its effects on oligodendrocytes and myelination.

Background: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are a common cause of acute illness among infants and young children. There are numerous methods for collecting urine in children who are not toilet trained. This review examined practice variation in the urine collection methods for diagnosing UTI in non-toilet-trained children.

Schistosomiasis and anemia, are one of the leading global public health problem among children between age 5 and 14 years in marginalized settings. In this study, we provide prevalence and intensity data for both conditions in three southwestern states of Nigeria, where such are lacking. Epidemiological assessment involving parasitological analysis of urine and blood samples was conducted among 1783 consenting school-aged children in Ondo, Osun, Ekiti States of Nigeria.

Background: Malaria vaccine, RTS, S/AS01, has demonstrated modest efficacy against malaria and holds promises for children living in areas where malaria transmission is high. This study assessed caregivers' awareness and willingness to accept the vaccine and provided vital information for policymakers, health workers, and social mobilizers on critical areas to focus on promoting the new vaccine uptake before its arrival for use in Nigeria.

Methods: The study was a community-based cross-sectional survey.

Motivation: Post-genome-wide association studies (pGWAS) analysis is designed to decipher the functional consequences of significant single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the era of GWAS. This can be translated into research insights and clinical benefits such as the effectiveness of strategies for disease screening, treatment and prevention. However, the setup of pGWAS (pGWAS) tools can be quite complicated, and it mostly requires big data.

infection (CDI) is a leading healthcare-associated infection with a high morbidity and mortality and is a financial burden. No current standalone point-of-care test (POCT) is sufficient for the identification of true CDI over a disease-free carriage of , so one is urgently required to ensure timely, appropriate treatment. Here, two types of binding proteins, Affimers and nanobodies, targeting two biomarkers, glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH) and toxin B (TcdB), are combined in NanoBiT (NanoLuc Binary Technology) split-luciferase assays.

Background: Globally, peripartum or puerperal infections account for about one tenth of maternal mortality, most of which occur in low income countries. Therefore, vaginal preparation with an antiseptic prior to a caesarean delivery could be considered an additional measure to prevent subsequent infectious morbidities.

Objectives: To evaluate vaginal preparation with 0.

Brain circuits are comprised of distinct interconnected neurons that are assembled by synaptic recognition molecules presented by defined pre- and post-synaptic neurons. This cell-cell recognition process is mediated by varying cellular adhesion molecules, including the latrophilin family of adhesion G-protein-coupled receptors. Focusing on parahippocampal circuitry, we find that latrophilin-2 (Lphn2; gene symbol ADGRL2) is specifically enriched in interconnected subregions of the medial entorhinal cortex (MEC), presubiculum (PrS), and parasubiculum (PaS).

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates the impact of cadmium exposure on heart metabolism and lipid storage in male Wistar rats, focusing on glucose and fatty acid metabolism.
  • - Results show cadmium significantly decreases insulin levels, affects specific enzyme activities (like pyruvate dehydrogenase), and increases fatty acid, cholesterol, and triglyceride levels in the heart, indicating metabolic disturbance.
  • - The findings suggest that cadmium interferes with how the heart processes glucose and fats, which may lead to decreased efficiency of the heart function in diabetic cardiomyopathy.

RAS mutations are the most common oncogenic drivers across human cancers, but there remains a paucity of clinically-validated pharmacological inhibitors of RAS, as druggable pockets have proven difficult to identify. Here, we identify two RAS-binding Affimer proteins, K3 and K6, that inhibit nucleotide exchange and downstream signaling pathways with distinct isoform and mutant profiles. Affimer K6 binds in the SI/SII pocket, whilst Affimer K3 is a non-covalent inhibitor of the SII region that reveals a conformer of wild-type RAS with a large, druggable SII/α3 pocket.

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection is an emerging infection that is of major public health concern, especially in some vulnerable groups like immunosuppressed individuals, pregnant women and HBV-coinfected individuals. HEV is transmitted faecal/oral or zoonotically depending on the HEV-genotype. This study aimed at investigating HEV infections among different at-risk populations in Osun State, Southwestern Nigeria.

Alzheimer poses lots of challenges in Low and Middle Income Countries, especially in Nigeria. Globally, the causes of Alzheimer are poorly understood. Cultural factors affect the preference of mental health treatment for treating people living with Alzheimer's disease (PLWA However, Alzheimer's and its gender differentials have been given little consideration in particular.

Article Synopsis
  • The lifetime risk of dying from breast and cervical cancer in Africa is significantly higher compared to developed countries, primarily due to a lack of awareness and low screening levels.
  • The study aimed to assess women's knowledge about these cancers and identify factors affecting their participation in screening programs in Nigeria.
  • Findings revealed that while there was some awareness of breast cancer, knowledge about cervical cancer was limited, and participation in screening was influenced by factors such as lack of information, personal beliefs, economic barriers, and inadequate facilities.

Robust technology is required to underpin rapid point-of-care and in-field diagnostics to improve timely decision making across broad sectors. An attractive strategy combines target recognition and signal generating elements into an "active" enzyme-switch that directly transduces target-binding into a signal. However, approaches that are broadly applicable to diverse targets remain elusive.

Background: The major challenge faced in Nigeria regarding the care of people living with mental illness are a stigma, caregiver burden and financial aid. This has led to high premature deaths and has also hindered the attainment of Sustainable Development Goal 3 target 4. In an attempt to find lasting solutions to increased mortality caused by mental illness, it is important to evaluate family attitudes towards people living with mental illness.

Background: Systematic studies on the association between men's sexual dysfunction (low sexual desire, ejaculation disorders, erectile dysfunctions, genital ulcers, testicular disorders, prostate cancer or sexually transmitted infections) and marital conflict are emerging. However, the coping strategies adopted by wives in such circumstances are not commonly reported in the literature. Male sexual functioning is vital to the marital relationship, lack of it can result in intolerable cohabitation or relationship breakdown, and could also cause infertility, infidelity, and arouse stigma in Nigeria.
