Chemical reprogramming enables the generation of human pluripotent stem (hCiPS) cells from somatic cells using small molecules, providing a promising strategy for regenerative medicine. However, the current method is time consuming, and some cell lines from different donors are resistant to chemical induction, limiting the utility of this approach. Here, we developed a fast reprogramming system capable of generating hCiPS cells in as few as 10 days.

Massive Dirac fermions, which are essential for realizing novel topological phenomena, are expected to be generated from massless Dirac fermions by breaking the related symmetry, such as time-reversal symmetry in topological insulators or crystal symmetry in topological crystalline insulators. Here, we report scanning tunneling microscopy and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy studies of α-Bi_{4}I_{4}, which reveals the realization of massive Dirac fermions in the (100) surface states without breaking the time-reversal symmetry. Combined with first-principles calculations, our experimental results indicate that the spontaneous symmetry breaking engenders two nondegenerate edge states at the opposite sides of monolayer Bi_{4}I_{4} after the structural phase transition, imparting mass to the Dirac fermions after taking the interlayer coupling into account.

Ovarian function declines significantly as females enter middle-age, but the mechanisms underlying this decline remain unclear. Here, we utilize whole-organ imaging to observe a notable decrease in ovarian blood vessel (oBV) density and angiogenesis intensity of middle-aged mice. This leads to a diminished blood supply to the ovaries, resulting in inadequate development and maturation of ovarian follicles.

In the process of long-distance pressurized pipeline water transmission, in addition to the problem of water hammer hazards that can easily occur in the pipeline, the safety of the pipeline before the pump also presents hidden dangers. When excessive water hammer pressure occurs in the whole pipeline, it can easily lead to pipeline leakage or even pipe bursting. In this work, we analyze the pressure head in the pipeline of a long-distance pumping station using modeling calculations from KY PIPE software, combined with data from an actual water transmission project, to study the effect of stopping the pump water hammer.

In this work, temperature-responsive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) and the ‌guanylthiourea (GLA) were used to modify chitosan (CS) to prepare a novel PNIPAM/GLA/CS adsorbent for Ag(I) ions. Temperature variations near the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) facilitate the adjustment of functional group distribution within the composite material, thereby influencing its adsorption performance for silver ions. The characteristics of this composite material were confirmed using a variety of techniques, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), variable-temperature ultraviolet-visible near-infrared spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS).

Domino cascade reactions, which can construct multiple bonds in one pot, are efficient methods to synthesize N-heterocycles and other useful skeletons. Herein, we report an expedient synthesis of polysubstituted benzo[][1,5]naphthyridine via Mn(III)-mediated C-C bond cleavage of cyclopropanols. These reactions were initiated by addition of β-carbonyl radicals, generated from cyclopropyl alcohols in the presence of Mn(III), to 2-(2-isocyanophenyl)acetonitriles to give quinolin-3-amines, which went through intramolecular cyclizations and dehydrogenation to give the final products.

The sluggish anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysis necessitates applied bias to facilitate electron transfer as well as bond cleavage and formation. Traditional electrocatalysis focuses on analyzing the effects of electron transfer, while the role of charge accumulation induced by the applied overpotential has not been thoroughly investigated. To explore the influence mechanism of bias-driven charge accumulation, capacitive Mn is incorporated into IrO to regulate the local electronic structure and the adsorption behavior.

Article Synopsis
  • Endothelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EndMT) is a process where endothelial cells transform into a different cell type, contributing to the dysfunction that initiates atherosclerosis, but the exact triggers in atherosclerotic environments are not well understood.
  • Research involving single-cell sequencing in mice on a high-fat diet showed that PIM1, a protein, is expressed in both endothelial cells and atherosclerotic lesions and plays a crucial role in the progression of atherosclerosis.
  • Knockdown of PIM1 in endothelial cells reduced atherosclerosis and EndMT by affecting key proteins and pathways associated with cell transformation, suggesting that targeting this pathway could be a potential therapeutic approach.
