Walrus ivory was a prized commodity in medieval Europe and was supplied by Norse intermediaries who expanded across the North Atlantic, establishing settlements in Iceland and Greenland. However, the precise sources of the traded ivory have long remained unclear, raising important questions about the sustainability of commercial walrus harvesting, the extent to which Greenland Norse were able to continue mounting their own long-range hunting expeditions, and the degree to which they relied on trading ivory with the various Arctic Indigenous peoples that they were starting to encounter. We use high-resolution genomic sourcing methods to track walrus artifacts back to specific hunting grounds, demonstrating that Greenland Norse obtained ivory from High Arctic waters, especially the North Water Polynya, and possibly from the interior Canadian Arctic.

Background: Psychotic disorders have long been considered neurodevelopmental disorders where excessive synaptic pruning and cortical volume loss are central to disease pathology. We conducted a systematic review of the literature to identify neuroimaging studies specifically examining synaptic density across the psychosis spectrum.
Methods: PRISMA guidelines on reporting were followed.
Oxidation of chromium (Cr)-bearing minerals by manganese (Mn) oxides is viewed as the dominant mechanism controlling geogenic production of Cr(VI) and its contamination of groundwater. This process may be modulated by other chemical constituents found in the natural environment, but such confounding factors have not been quantified. In this study, Mn concentrations reported to California's Safe Drinking Water Information System were used to estimate the potentially exposed population within California based on system size. We estimate that between 2011 and 2021, over 525,000 users in areas with reported Mn data are potentially exposed to Mn concentrations exceeding the WHO health-based guideline (80 μg L), and over 34,000 users are potentially exposed to Mn concentrations exceeding the U.

Here we tested manganese and arsenic retention under conditions commonly found within aquifer redox fluctuating and transition zones where both arsenic and iron phases are present in oxidized forms, but manganese persists as reduced and soluble Mn(II). Analysis of column aqueous breakthrough data and characterization of solid-phase products using X-ray photoelectron (XPS) and absorption spectroscopies (XAS) show that the addition of bicarbonate increased manganese retention but decreased arsenic retention, while the presence of manganese and arsenic together increased both arsenic and manganese retention.

Objectives: To assess whether the bisection of the fabellae by their respective femoral cortices is a useful criterion for assessing positioning of craniocaudal pelvic limb radiographs, and whether this is consistent in limbs affected or unaffected by medial patella luxation.
Methods: Computed tomography multi-planar reconstructions were used to determine the relative positions of the fabellae with respect to the femoral cortices.
Results: Only 36% of fabellae overall were bisected by the femoral cortex.
Using survey and documentary information collected as part of an evaluation of the 2012 conference, this paper reflects upon the value of the 2012 World Conference to attendees of the event. The results are discussed in the context of questions about what the purpose of conference is to the world injury prevention community and how they are organised. The evaluators challenge the community and future organisers to clarify what the purpose of these events are to better inform future evaluation activities.
