Background: Despite the high mortality of cardiogenic shock after acute myocardial infarction (AMI-CS), the comparative efficacy and safety of mechanical circulatory support (MCS) in patients with AMI-CS is unknown. This study aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of various MCS with initial medical therapy for AMI-CS patients.

Methods: We searched PubMed and EMBASE in July 2024.

Lactoferrin (LF) is an iron-binding glycoprotein of the transferrin family and has been suggested to have a variety of biological functions, including anticancer activity. However, the effects of LF and its mechanisms in anticancer therapies, especially in radiotherapy against cancer cells under hypoxic conditions, are not well-determined. In this study, we focused on the molecular mechanisms of LF functions in cells under hypoxic conditions.

Anticancer effect of the antirheumatic drug leflunomide on oral squamous cell carcinoma by the inhibition of tumor angiogenesis.

Objectives: Leflunomide (LEF) is a conventional synthetic disease-modifying antirheumatic drug and suppresses T-cell proliferation and activity by inhibiting pyrimidine synthesis using dihydroorotase dehydrogenase (DHODH); however, several studies have demonstrated that LEF possesses anticancer and antiangiogenic effects in some malignant tumors. Therefore, we investigated the anticancer and antiangiogenic effects of LEF on oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC).

Methods: To evaluate the inhibitory effect of LEF on OSCC, cell proliferation and wound-healing assays using human OSCC cell lines were performed.

A 48-year-old male with a history of hyperlipidemia presented to the emergency department with chest pain. Electrocardiographic abnormalities indicated an acute coronary syndrome. Urgent coronary angiography revealed nondominant right coronary artery (RCA) occlusion.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is on the rise, and over 50% of patients die from cardiac causes. Patients develop heart failure due to unelucidated reno-cardiac interactions, termed type 4 cardiorenal syndrome (CRS4). The aim of this study is to establish and characterize a reliable model of CRS4 in swine with marked cardiac diastolic dysfunction.

Key Clinical Message: Chin augmentation by hyaluronic acid filler injection rarely causes abnormal bone resorption in the mentum. Thus, when taking the history of a patient with jaw deformity, it is imperative to check the history of treatment of the mentum.

Abstract: Hyaluronic acid (HA) filler injection is a common procedure in nonsurgical cosmetic chin augmentation.

Clinical impact of cryoballoon posterior wall isolation using the cross-over technique in persistent atrial fibrillation.

Background And Aims: Successful left atrial posterior wall isolation (LAPWI) using only the cryoballoon (CB) is technically challenging for the treatment of atrial fibrillation (AF). This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of the cross-over technique, wherein an overlapped ablation is performed by placing the CB from both directions in contact with the LAPW.

Methods: This was a single-center, retrospective, observational study of 194 consecutive patients with persistent atrial fibrillation (PerAF) who underwent a first-time procedure of pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) + PWI (108 patients) or PVI-only (86 patients) using the CB.

Background: With the decreasing age threshold for patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty (THA), there is an escalating demand for enhanced polyethylene durability. Although reports assessing wear in remelted highly cross-linked polyethylene (HXLPE) through radiographic imaging exist, a consensus regarding its oxidation level is lacking. This study investigated the wear, oxidation levels, and degradation of remelted HXLPE that was retrieved at least 10 years after THA.

Antibiotic susceptibility and genome analysis of Enterococcus species isolated from inpatients in one hospital with no apparent outbreak of vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus in Japan.

To prevent nosocomial infection, it is important to screen for potential vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE) among patients. In this study, we analyzed enterococcal isolates from inpatients in one hospital without any apparent outbreak of VRE. Enterococcal isolates were collected from inpatients at Hiroshima University Hospital from April 1 to June 30, 2021 using selective medium for Enterococci.

Surgical Orthodontic Treatment for Skeletal Maxillary Protrusion in Sturge-Weber Syndrome: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Sturge-Weber syndrome (SWS) is characterized by hemangiomas, glaucoma, and central nervous system disorders. Here, we report the case of a 15-year-old boy with SWS and upper-lip hypertrophy who underwent surgical orthodontic treatment for correction of a large overjet and deep overbite. In addition to the a large overjet and deep overbite, interdental spacing was observed in both the arches.

Management of medial luxation of the shoulder joint in toy-breed dogs using an antiluxation pin placed lateral to the supraspinatus muscle tendon: 20 limbs (2017-2022).

Objective: To describe the clinical and diagnostic findings, surgical procedures, and clinical course of dogs with medial shoulder luxation (MSL) treated with a novel method using an antiluxation pin.

Animals: 18 client-owned toy-breed dogs (20 treated limbs).

Clinical Presentation: Toy-breed dogs with MSL were treated with the antiluxation pin (2017 to 2022).

Anesthetic management of a patient with Sturge-Weber syndrome in sagittal split ramus osteotomy surgery.

Sturge-Weber syndrome (SWS) is a neurocutaneous syndrome characterized by angiomas. This report presents airway management using submental intubation in sagittal split ramus osteotomy under general anesthesia and aimed to explore better anesthetic management for avoiding the rupture of angiomas in a patient with SWS.

Thoracic Vertebral Canal Stenosis and Vertebral Instability in a Young Minuet Cat.

This report describes a unique case of thoracic vertebral canal stenosis and vertebral instability in a 1 yr old Minuet cat. The cat presented with a history of chronic progressive nonambulatory paraparesis. Myelography with neutral and stress positions revealed dynamic compression at T1-4.

Objective: To evaluate the breed-characteristic features of cervical intervertebral disc disease (C-IVDD) and associated vertebral instability in small-breed dogs and to present the concept of intervertebral disc degeneration and associated instability stage, method of diagnosis, treatment and outcomes.

Animals: In total, 307 client-owned dogs with C-IVDD treated with spinal cord decompression with or without vertebral stabilization (2000-2021).

Methods: Information on age, sex, affected sites, stabilized sites, diagnostic methods for vertebral instability and outcomes were retrieved.
