Extramedullary Paravertebral Mass: An Unusual Presentation of Hairy Cell Leukaemia.

Background: Hairy cell leukaemia (HCL) is an uncommon, indolent, B-cell, lymphoproliferative disorder typically involving peripheral blood, spleen and bone marrow. It is commonly presenting with pancytopenia, monocytopenia and massive splenomegaly, while accounting for 2% of lymphoid leukaemias. Cases of extranodal lesions caused by HCL are rare, although these have been reported.

Inflammation and Venous Thromboembolism in Hospitalized Patients with COVID-19.

Background: A link between inflammation and venous thromboembolism (VTE) in COVID-19 disease has been suggested pathophysiologically and clinically. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between inflammation and disease outcomes in adult hospitalized COVID-19 patients with VTE.

Methods: This was a retrospective observational study, including quantitative and qualitative data collected from COVID-19 patients hospitalized at the Infectious Diseases Unit (IDU) of the University Hospital of Ioannina, from 1 March 2020 to 31 May 2022.

Introduction: During the COVID-19 pandemic, diabetes mellitus (DM) and obesity were associated with high rates of morbidity and mortality. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between markers of inflammation, disease severity, insulin resistance, hyperglycemia, and outcomes in COVID-19 patients with and without diabetes and obesity.

The posterior interhemispheric transparieto-occipital fissure approach to the atrium of the lateral ventricle: a fiber microdissection study with case series.

The surgical approach to the atrium of the lateral ventricle remains a challenge because of its deep location and close relationship to important neurovascular structures. We present an alternative and safer approach to lesions of the atrium using a natural pathway through the parieto-occipital fissure. We demonstrate this approach through cadaveric anatomical microdissection and a case series.

The role of vitamin D in maintaining a healthy cardiovascular (CV) and the renal system has received increasing attention. Low vitamin D levels are associated with the incidence of hypertension, cardiac remodeling, and chronic congestive heart failure. Low vitamin D levels also influence renal disease progression and albuminuria deterioration.

Reuse of internal pulse generator in cases of infection after deep brain stimulation surgery.

Background: Hardware-related infection after deep brain stimulation (DBS) is one of the most serious complications and may need additional interventions.

Upper gastrointestinal bleeding due to primary aortoenteric fistula.

Primary aortoenteric fistula (PAEF) is a rare but clinically important cause of catastrophic gastrointestinal bleeding. "Herald bleeding" is a characteristic symptom which refers to specific case of upper gastrointestinal bleeding that stop temporarily spontaneously and then proceeds to massive bleeding. We present the case report of a 55-year-old male with PAEF who was admitted due to upper gastrointestinal bleeding.

Diagnostic and therapeutic approach to pancreatic adenocarcinoma.

Pancreatic adenocarcinoma is the sixth leading cause of cancer-related death in Europe with survival rates remaining unchanged over the last three decades. Early diagnosis and accurate staging are essential due to the difficulty of curing this tumor in its advanced form. Endoscopic or laparoscopic ultrasonography and computed tomography are the preferred imaging and staging modalities for many patients with pancreatic adenocarcinoma.
