Background/purpose: Macrophages are considered to play an important role in the development of chronic apical periodontitis (CAP). However the function of tissue resident macrophages in CAP is unclear. This study aims to investigate the potential role of macrophages of different origins in CAP.

Ag modified ZnO nanoflower gas sensitive sensor for selective detection of n-butanol.

Ag modified ZnO nanoflowers were successfully prepared by sunlight induced solvent reduction method. The samples were characterized by x-ray diffractometer, field emission scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope and energy dispersive x-ray spectrum, and the results confirmed the presence of Ag nanoparticles on the ZnO nanoflower. The gas sensing performance of the materials was studied at different operating temperatures and different n-butanol concentrations.

Bilateral, sequential orbital inflammation secondary to relapsing polychondritis.

This report describes a case of a Caucasian man in his 60s with bilateral sequential orbital inflammatory disease associated with relapsing polychondritis (RPC).He first presented with a subclavian vein periphlebitis/thrombosis and swollen left knee. Two weeks later, he developed right orbital inflammation with restricted eye movements.

The modulator role of Urtica dioica on deleterious effects of retinoic acid high doses on histological parameters and fertilization of rats.

Aim: This study purposed to evaluate the modulator and protective role of Urtica dioica (UD) extract against deleterious effects of retinoic acid (RA) high doses on histological parameters and fertilization of rats.

Materials And Methods: For the in-vivo phase, 60 female Wistar rats were divided into 6 identical groups as 1) control, 2) 25 mg/kg RA, 3) 25 mg/kg UD extract, 4) 50 mg/kg UD extract, 5) UD extract (25 mg/kg) + RA (25 mg/kg), and 6) UD extract (50 mg/kg) + RA (25 mg/kg). Biochemical parameters, including luteinizing hormone (LH), folliclestimulating hormone (FSH), malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase (CAT) activities, were measured.

Legg-Calve-Perthes' disease (LCP) is defined as avascular necrosis of the femoral head in a child and may present to a variety of disciplines from general practice to orthopaedics, paediatrics, rheumatology and more. The Stickler syndromes are a group of disorders of type II, IX and XI collagen associated with hip dysplasia, retinal detachment, deafness and cleft palate. The pathogenesis of LCP disease remains an enigma but there have been a small number of cases reporting variants in the gene encoding the α1 chain of type II collagen (COL2A1).

The ocular manifestations of relapsing polychondritis.

Purpose: Relapsing polychondritis (RPC) is a rare, multi-system, inflammatory disorder. Ocular disease is estimated to occur in 14-67% of patients with RPC, and any ocular structure can be affected. Published case reports and series of RPC were analysed to determine the frequency and nature of the ocular manifestations of RPC, including the age and gender distribution.

As promising materials for pulp regeneration, hydrogel scaffolds have been produced to simulate the extracellular matrix and transmit signaling molecules.

Study on the preparation of the hierarchical porous CX-TiO composites and their selective degradation of PHE solubilized in soil washing eluent.

A series of CX-TiO(Carbon Xerogel- TiO) composites with a hierarchical porous structure were obtained through the sol-gel method followed by drying and carbonization, and have been applied to treating solubilizing wastewater containing a high concentration of phenanthrene (PHE). The characterizations demonstrated that the CX-TiO exhibits a hierarchical porous structure, with particles of carbon and P25 being uniformly in the matrix. Removal efficiency of CX-TiO on PHE in soil washing eluent (SWE) were evaluated under ultraviolet (UV) irradiation or dark condition, and P25 was employed as the reference.

Scleral buckling-a brief historical overview and current indications.

The key to successful management of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) is to find and seal all of the retinal breaks, and the two main surgical techniques used to achieve this are scleral bucking (SB) or pars plana vitrectomy (PPV). Techniques for SB have remained mostly unchanged for the last 60 years, whilst PPV techniques and instruments have developed substantially over that time and have greatly contributed to increased success rate for types and configurations of retinal detachments unsuitable or difficult to manage with buckling alone. However, there is a growing dependency to rely on PPV as the sole and only approach for repair of all types of retinal detachment, such that some centres are no longer offering training in scleral buckling.

The Clinical Utility of the TYM and RBANS in a One-Stop Memory Clinic in Singapore: A Pilot Study.

Background: We aimed to examine the discriminant validity of a brief self-administered cognitive screening test, the Test Your Memory (TYM) and a brief neuropsychological test, the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS), supplemented with executive and language tests (Color Trail Test [CTT] and modified Boston Naming Test [mBNT], respectively), in detecting cognitive impairment (CI) in a one-stop memory clinic in Singapore.

Methods: Ninety patients ≥50 years old with a diagnosis of no cognitive impairment, mild cognitive impairment, and mild Alzheimer disease were recruited from memory clinic. They received the TYM, Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), RBANS, CTT, mBNT, and a gold-standard formal neuropsychological test battery.

Effects of preemptive interferon-α monotherapy in acute leukemia patients with relapse tendency after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation: a case-control study.

Interferon-α (IFN-α) inhibits tumor growth and mimics graft-versus-leukemia after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT). In the current case-control study, we compared treatment responses in acute leukemia patients with relapse tendency post-allo-HSCT receiving preemptive IFN-α after withdrawal of immunosuppressants (n = 31) vs. receiving no IFN-α (n = 67).

Analysis of curative effect of I implantation combined with radiofrequency ablation in treating bone metastases.

The aims of this study were to investigate the clinical effects of I implantation combined with radiofrequency ablation in treating bone metastases (BM) and analyze its clinical application so as to provide better treatment protocols for the treatment of BM. A total of 63 BM patients were randomly divided into the I implantation group (CON, treated with I seeds alone, 33 patients) and the combination group (I-MA, 30 patients) to compare the clinical efficacy and adverse effects. Large-scale hydropower system optimization using dynamic programming and object-oriented programming: the case of the Northeast China Power Grid.

This paper examines long-term optimal operation using dynamic programming for a large hydropower system of 10 reservoirs in Northeast China. Besides considering flow and hydraulic head, the optimization explicitly includes time-varying electricity market prices to maximize benefit. Two techniques are used to reduce the 'curse of dimensionality' of dynamic programming with many reservoirs.
