Periodontitis is an inflammatory disease induced by the complex interactions between the host immune system and the microbiota of dental plaque. Oxidative stress and the inflammatory microenvironment resulting from periodontitis are among the primary factors contributing to the progression of the disease. Additionally, the presence of dental plaque microbiota plays a significant role in affecting the condition.

Background: Oral cancer is the most common malignant tumor of the head and neck, and 90% of cases are oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Chemotherapy is an important component of comprehensive treatment for OSCC. However, the clinical treatment effect of chemotherapy drugs, such as doxorubicin (DOX), is limited due to the lack of tumor targeting and rapid clearance by the immune system.

Phenolic acids are known to reduce root biomass and hinder plant development, but it is unclear how they affect potato root traits. Over a 10 year field experiment, we found a negative correlation between the potato yield and continuous cropping years. The substantial reduction in adventitious root (AR) numbers was found to be primarily inhibited by soil vanillin accumulation.

Introduction: The efficacy of mindfulness-based intervention for heart diseases remains controversial. We conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to explore the impact of mindfulness-based intervention on heart diseases.

Methods: We have search PubMed, EMbase, Web of science, EBSCO, and Cochrane library databases through August 2020 for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) assessing the effect of mindfulness-based intervention versus usual care on heart diseases.

Human antigen R (HuR), an RNA-binding protein, has been demonstrated to serve an oncogenic role in various types of cancer. Fibroblast growth factor receptor-like 1 (FGFRL1) has been shown to regulate small cell lung cancer (SCLC) chemoresistance. In the present study, the role of HuR in chemoresistance of SCLC, as well as its possible molecular mechanism involving FGFRL1, was explored by reverse transcription-quantitative PCR, western blotting, Cell Counting Kit-8 assay, flow cytometry and RNA immunoprecipitation.

Biofilms, which are essential vectors of bacterial survival, protect microbes from antibiotics and host immune attack and are one of the leading causes that maintain drug-resistant chronic infections. In nature, compared with monomicrobial biofilms, polymicrobial biofilms composed of multispecies bacteria predominate, which means that it is significant to explore the interactions between microorganisms from different kingdoms, species, and strains. Cross-microbial interactions exist during biofilm development, either synergistically or antagonistically.

Purpose: To investigate the association of polymorphism of IL-1β rs16944(T/C) with intervertebral disk degeneration (IDD), explore the possible mechanism and evaluate the predictive value of IL-1β for IDD.

Patients And Methods: A total of 196 consecutive patients with IDD were recruited, and 196 healthy controls were matched to these patients based on sex and age (±3 years). The polymorphisms of IL-1β rs16944(T/C), rs1143623(G/C), rs10490571(T/C) and rs2853550(A/G) were determined, and serum IL-1β, MMP-1, MMP-3, MMP-9 and a disintegrin-like and metalloproteinase with thrombospondin motif-4 (ADAMTS-4) levels were measured.

Similar to the mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) also have pluripotent differentiation characteristic and may be more ideal for tissue regeneration, especially in tooth regeneration engineering. However, bacterial infection may be a powerful obstacle. Berberine (BBR), known with antibacterial effects, was recently found to play functions in bone formation through promoting osteogenic differentiation from pluripotent stem cells.

Article Synopsis
  • Cancer is a significant public health issue in China, with rising rates of incidence and mortality, particularly concerning concurrent cancers defined as having multiple primary malignancies in an individual.
  • A Chinese family with several concurrent cancer cases was studied using whole exome sequencing to identify genetic mutations that could explain their conditions.
  • The analysis highlighted the NADH:ubiquinone oxidoreductase core subunit S7 as a candidate gene for somatic mutations and identified 16 other genes with germline mutations, providing new insights into the molecular causes of concurrent cancers.

Abnormal expression of miR-224 has been reported to promote cancer progression. However, the role of miR-224 is seldom reported in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). We reported that miR-224 expression was significantly down-regulated in OSCC tissues and cell lines.

The aim was to analyze quantitative (mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) content) and qualitative (G10398A polymorphism) mtDNA alterations as well as human papillomavirus (HPV) infection in cervical cancer prognosis. One hundred and twenty-two cases of formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded cervical carcinoma specimens were collected from the Yichang Tumor Hospital and Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University in the recent 10 years together with medical records. A quantitative real-time PCR (RT-PCR) was used to determine the copy number of the mitochondrial DNA and HPV expression levels.

Fascin actin-bundling protein 1 (FSCN1) plays significant roles in biological processes such as tumor cell invasion and metastasis. However, little is known about prognostic value of FSCN1 in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). FSCN1 mRNA and protein expression were detected by real-time PCR and Western blot in NSCLC tissues and paired adjacent normal lung tissues.

The aim of the study was to investigate the tumor-suppressor effect of GALC in Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-associated nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) and determine whether GALC was downregulated by promoter hypermethy-lation in the NPC cell line, CNE-2Z. Forty-one archival NPC biopsy specimens were compared with 15 chronic nasopharyngitis specimens. EBV-encoded RNA (EBER) was verified by in situ hybridization and GALC protein expression was analyzed by immunohistochemistry.

In the present work we undertook the complete mitochondrial genome sequencing of an important cholangiocarcinoma model inbred rat strain for the first time. Its mitogenome was 16,312 bp and coding 13 protein-coding genes, 2 ribosomal RNA genes, 22 transfer RNA genes. A total of 96 SNPs were examined when compared to reference BN sequence.

Objective To explore the possible role of voltage-gated potassium channel-interacting protein 1 (KChIP1) in the pathogenesis of epilepsy. Methods Sprague Dawley female adult rats were treated with pentylenettrazole (PTZ) to develop acute and chronic epilepsy models. The approximate coronal sections of normal and epilepsy rat brain were processed for immunohistochemistry.
