Introduction: Recent evidence suggests the relationship between periodontitis and systemic inflammation, which complete blood count can assess (CBC)-derived biomarkers such as neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR). We conducted this meta-analysis to evaluate the levels of NLR and PLR of patients with periodontitis compared to those of healthy controls.  METHODS: Web of Science, PubMed, ProQuest, Scopus, and Open Grey were searched for studies published before October 20, 2024, without any limitation on date and language; then, using the random-effects model, we reported a standardized mean difference (SMD) with a 95% confidence interval (CI).

Background: Uncontrolled bleeding is still the major factor leading to preventable deaths following trauma. This study sought to assess the effectiveness of mini sponge-based wound stasis, cellulose-based local hemostatic, and traditional gauze dressings for the control of hemorrhages resulting from grade 4 liver injuries in rats.

Methods: Thirty Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into three equal groups.

Background: Giant coronary artery aneurysms (GCAA), are rare findings often discovered incidentally in adults. GCAAs are defined by a significant enlargement of coronary arteries, posing a heightened risk of myocardial infarction and thrombosis.

Case Presentation: A 52-year-old male known case of ischemic heart disease (IHD), presented with chest pain and signs of anterior ST-elevation MI (STEMI).

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess how the neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) impacts the outcomes of patients with penile squamous cell carcinoma (PSCC).
  • A meta-analysis was performed, analyzing 14 studies to understand the relationship between NLR levels and patient survival, utilizing established quality assessment criteria.
  • Results indicated that higher NLR levels were linked to worse prognosis and lower survival rates in PSCC patients, confirming NLR's important role in diagnosis and prognosis despite no link to tumor size or stage.

Cardiac papillary fibroelastomas (CPF) are rare, benign tumors with thromboembolic potential. We present a 40-year-old male with a right atrial CPF, referred with acute chest pain. Advanced imaging and surgical excision with tricuspid valve repair were crucial, emphasizing the need for early detection and intervention in symptomatic and asymptomatic cases.

Background: The arterial stiffness measured by pulsed wave velocity (PWV) is associated with heart failure (HF). However, the effectiveness of arterial stiffness and PWV as prognostic indicators in patients with HFpEF and HFrEF is still unclear. In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we synthesized the prognostic value of PWV and arterial stiffness in HF patients.

Introduction: The inflammatory response to burn injuries can lead to organ dysfunction that ultimately results in increased mortality and morbidity. This meta-analysis was conducted to determine the efficacy of inflammatory biomarkers, including the neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR), procalcitonin (PCT), and C-reactive protein (CRP) as predictive tools of mortality among burn patients.

Material And Methods: The biomarker levels of survivors and non-survivors were consolidated according to guidelines for Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA).

Our study aimed to enhance understanding of nasal polyp pathophysiology by reviewing the data for variations of NLR values between patients with nasal polyp and healthy controls. We searched Web of Science, PubMed, ProQuest, and Scopus up to 2 April 2023. The search strategy was not limited to any specific language.

This meta-analysis assessed the use of the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) as a means of early detection of contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN) following diagnostic or therapeutic procedures. We used Web of Science, PubMed, and Scopus to conduct a systematic search. There was no limitation regarding language or date of publication.

Unlabelled: One of the crucial triggers of allergic diseases is an inflammatory reaction and neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is one of the systemic inflammation biomarkers. Our review aimed to evaluate role of NLR in predicting severity and comorbidities of allergic rhinitis (AR). We systematically searched Scopus, Web of Science, and PubMed to find relevant studies.

Background: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to determine the potential value of neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) as an assessment tool in the clinical distinction between uterine sarcoma and uterine leiomyoma.

Methods: We comprehensively searched Web of Science, Scopus, and PubMed for relevant papers published before March 19, 2023. The standardized mean difference (SMD) was provided, along with a 95% confidence interval (CI).

Article Synopsis
  • A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to analyze oxidative and antioxidative markers in patients with recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) compared to healthy controls, including data from 30 studies.
  • Results indicated that RAS patients had significantly lower activities of certain antioxidants, like erythrocyte superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase, and total antioxidant status in serum, while they exhibited increased levels of oxidative stress markers such as serum malondialdehyde.
  • Despite these differences, some antioxidant levels and vitamins (like E and C) were comparable between RAS patients and healthy individuals, suggesting ongoing oxidative stress plays a significant role in RAS pathology, though the exact causes remain unclear.

Article Synopsis
  • Objective: Researchers are tackling the issue of multidrug-resistant bacteria (MDR) by exploring the use of antibacterial nanomaterials to combat infections caused by these resistant pathogens.
  • Methods: The study reviews research from various biomedical databases, analyzing 41 studies on the antibacterial and anti-biofilm properties of different nanomaterials published from 2007 to December 2022.
  • Results: Nineteen types of nanomaterials showed potential antibacterial properties, while seven were identified as agents against biofilms, suggesting that these materials could be crucial in developing new treatments to combat antibiotic resistance and prevent disease outbreaks.

Background: Vitamin D, one of the most essential micronutrients, is crucial in various health outcomes. However, previous studies showed conflicting results and uncertainty about vitamin D supplementation's optimal dosage and duration. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the vitamin D supplements efficiency on serum levels of 25-hydroxy vitamin D (25(OH)D), 1,25-dihdroxy vitamin D (1,25(OH)2D), parathyroid hormone (PTH) and renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) in adults.

Background: The goal of this research was to explore the role of Neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in Parkinson's disease (PD).

Methods: From inception to 4 June 2023, PubMed, Web of Science, and ProQuest were searched for papers comparing NLR in PD to healthy individuals. Standardized mean difference (SMD) with a confidence interval (CI) of 95% were calculated.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study systematically reviewed existing research to assess the diagnostic ability of the neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in distinguishing between tuberculosis (TB) and bacterial community-acquired pneumonia (B-CAP) using PRISMA guidelines.
  • - An analysis of data revealed that TB patients had significantly lower NLR levels compared to B-CAP patients, with consistent results found across various study quality and populations, especially in Asian cohorts.
  • - The study concluded that lower NLR levels could serve as an effective biomarker to differentiate between TB and B-CAP, with pooled sensitivity and specificity values indicating strong diagnostic potential.
