Chemical transformations at metal oxide interfaces that are triggered by mechanical energy set the basis for applications in the fields of tribo- and mechanochemistry, ceramic and composite processing, and piezoelectric devices. We investigated the early stages of tribochemically initiated radical chemistry of structurally well-defined TiO and BaTiO nanoparticles in argon or in oxygen atmosphere. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy enabled the determination of the chemical nature and concentration of paramagnetic surface species which form upon uniaxial powder compaction at room temperature.

Configurations of composite metal oxide nanoparticles are typically far off their thermodynamic equilibrium state. As such they represent a versatile but so far overlooked source material for the intergranular solid-state chemistry inside ceramics. Here, it is demonstrated how the admixture of Fe and In ions to MgO nanoparticles, as achieved by flame spray pyrolysis, can be used to engage ion exsolution, phase separation, and subsequent spinel formation inside the network of diamagnetic and insulating MgO grains.

Ion exsolution can be instrumental to engineer intergranular regions inside ceramic microstructures. BaO admixtures that were trapped inside nanometer-sized MgO grains during gas phase synthesis undergo annealing-induced exsolution to generate photoluminescent surface and interface structures. During their segregation from the bulk into the grain interfaces, the BaO admixtures impact grain coarsening and powder densification, effects that were compared for the first time using an integrated characterization approach.

To date studies have not investigated the culture-independent microbiome of bile from dogs, a species where aseptic collection of bile under ultrasound guidance is somewhat routine. Despite frequent collection of bile for culture-based diagnosis of bacterial cholecystitis, it is unknown whether bile from healthy dogs harbors uncultivable bacteria or a core microbiota. The answer to this question is critical to understanding the pathogenesis of biliary infection and as a baseline to exploration of other biliary diseases in dogs where uncultivable bacteria could play a pathogenic role.

Powder compaction-induced surface chemistry in metal oxide nanocrystal ensembles is important for very diverse fields such as triboelectrics, tribocatalysts, surface abrasion, and cold sintering of ceramics. Using a range of spectroscopic techniques, we show that MgO nanocube powder compaction with uniaxial pressures that can be achieved by gentle manual rubbing or pressing ( ≥ 5 MPa) excites energetic electron-hole pairs and generates oxygen radicals at interfacial defect structures. While the identification of paramagnetic O radicals and their adsorption complexes with O point to the emergence of hole centers, triboemitted electrons become scavenged by molecular oxygen to convert into adsorbed superoxide anions O as measured by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR).

Nanostructured segregates of alkaline earth oxides exhibit bright photoluminescence emission and great potential as components of earth-abundant inorganic phosphors. We evaluated segregation engineering of Ca- and Ba-admixtures in sintered MgO nanocube-derived compacts. Compaction and sintering transform the nanoparticle agglomerates into ceramics with residual porosities of = 24-28%.

Case Report: We report on a 37-year old patient with sudden onset of pain of the right scalp and an ipsilateral small pupil, presenting five weeks after chiropractic manipulation of the neck.

Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) was a randomized, multicenter feeding study designed to assess the effects of modifying dietary patterns on blood pressure. Among the most challenging aspects of conducting the DASH trial was the recruitment of participants at the 4 clinical centers. As part of the recruitment drive, 347,500 brochures were mailed, 250,500 coupons were distributed in coupon packs, 114 advertisements were published in newspapers or bulletins, 140 radio and 74 television advertisements were broadcast, and 68 screening events and presentations were conducted.

The Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) study was a National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute multicenter trial that compared the impact of three dietary patterns on blood pressure (BP) among adults with high normal blood pressure or mild (Stage I) hypertension. DASH's high minority representation (two-thirds of the 459 randomized participants came from minority populations, and 60% of the cohort were African American) offered a valuable opportunity to assess factors affecting minority enrollment and retention in clinical trials of lifestyle modification. Recruitment strategies included targeted mailings to specific groups, mass mailings, community and worksite screenings, and mass media advertising; the four DASH clinical centers also reimbursed participants from $150 to $160.

We present a retrospective study on children with the final diagnosis osteomyelitis, who have been examined in Tübingen from 1985 to 1991. The different types of infantile osteomyelitis were classified due to the causative organism and findings in 3-phase scintigraphy and X-ray films. For the chronic type of osteomyelitis the study was extended to the years from 1979 to 1991 and the results of an earlier report were included.

We report the case of a 41-yr-old woman who presented with arterial hypertension and tinnitus in the right ear synchronous with pulse. She had previously undergone surgery for suspected pheochromocytoma without positive therapeutic effect. CT and MRI revealed a homogenous tumor with contrast enhancement in the right hypotympanon and foramen jugulare, and [123I]metaiodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) scintigraphy demonstrated strong tracer uptake in the same area.

Multiphoton ionization mass spectra of nonvolatile molecules laser desorbed into a supersonic beam are recorded. It is shown by indirect measurements that the laser desorption of neutrals is not mass limited, but lead to the formation of neutrals with intesities large enough for intense signals. To investigate the efficiency of the multiphoton ionization process with varying laser pulse durations, simultaneous laser pulses of 500 fs and 5 ns or 100 fs and 5 ns have been applied to the neutral beam.

We report the case of a 39-yr-old female with a liver lesion that was incidentally detected by ultrasound. Examination of biopsy specimens revealed focal nodular hyperplasia. A metastatic tumor in the right os ilium developed in the following weeks and showed specific uptake of 99mTc-hepatic 2,6-dimethyliminodiacetic acid (HIDA), suggesting metastasis from a differentiated hepatocellular carcinoma.
