This study aimed to clarify changes in antimicrobial prescribing trends in pediatric clinics before and after the chronic shortage of amoxicillin and amoxicillin-clavulanic acid from 2023 in Japan. Amoxicillin and amoxicillin-clavulanic acid have been in chronic short supply since May 24, 2023 due to increased demand. It is unclear whether this situation has changed the type of oral antimicrobials prescribed by clinics.

We have recently reported that the paracellular route is the major urate transport pathway across the blood-placental barrier. In this study, the mechanism of urate paracellular transport was investigated in several epithelial cell lines including Madin-Darby canine kidney (MDCK) type I, Lilly Laboratories cell-porcine kidney 1 (LLC-PK1) and Caco-2 cells.

The coefficients of sorption (logK ) to the river sediments were also determined from the results of a field survey and laboratory-scale experiment. Three anticancer drugs-bicalutamide, doxifluridine, and tamoxifen-were detected in the river sediments at maximum concentrations of 391, 392, and 250 ng/kg, respectively.

A detailed survey of sewage treatment plant (STP) influent and effluent, and river water was also conducted. Finally, mass balances with mass fluxes of the target PPs through the water flow were evaluated and the degree of contribution of hospital effluent to the environmental discharge was estimated.

Sex hormones administered to farm animals are of particular interest because of their regulatory role in developmental processes. To predict concentrations in humans of the synthetic growth promoter melengestrol acetate (17α-acetoxy-6-methyl-16-methylenepregna-4,6-diene-3,20-dione), a forward dosimetry approach was carried out using data from no-observed-adverse-effect-level doses orally administered to mice or rats and from in vitro human and rodent experiments.

Urate is the final metabolite of purine in humans. Renal urate handling is clinically important because under-reabsorption or underexcretion causes hypouricemia or hyperuricemia, respectively. We have identified a urate-anion exchanger, URAT1, localized at the apical side and a voltage-driven urate efflux transporter, URATv1, expressed at the basolateral side of the renal proximal tubules.
