Diagnosing neurosyphilis in clinical settings poses significant challenges due to the absence of highly efficient diagnostic criteria. Our objective was to enhance the existing diagnostic criteria and assess their sensitivity and specificity for identifying neurosyphilis in HIV-negative patients. We conducted a retrospective review of patient records from a cross-sectional study carried out between December 2019 and May 2023.

Advances in the protection of intestinal mucosal barrier function by milk-derived miRNAs.

Milk is a significant component of the human diet, providing an abundance of energy and nutrients and a variety of functional factors. Recent studies have revealed that milk is highly enriched in exosomes with intercellular communication functions, which can act on target cells by carrying and delivering miRNAs and critically participating in physiological processes such as host intestinal development, cell differentiation, and immune response. In recent years, the biosynthesis of milk-derived miRNAs and their cross-border uptake mechanisms, the biological functions of milk-derived miRNAs and the universality of their regulatory modalities, the extraction and identification of milk-derived miRNAs as novel active ingredients and their potential as biomarkers have been extensively studied.

Survival influence of gender on 42,345 patients with gastric cardia adenocarcinoma.

Purpose: Some studies indicated that gender is associated with prognostic of cancer, However, currently the prognostic value of gender for gastric cardia adenocarcinoma (GCA) survival is unclear. The aim of our study is to reveal the influence of gender on the prognosis of patients with GCA.

Several echocardiographic methods to estimate pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR) have been proposed. So far, most studies have focused on relatively low PVR in patients with a nonspecific type of pulmonary hypertension. We aimed to clarify the clinical usefulness of a new echocardiographic index for evaluating markedly elevated PVR in chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH).

Transthoracic, thoracoabdominal, and transabdominal surgical approaches for gastric cardia adenocarcinomas: a survival evaluation based on a cohort of 7103 patients.

Background: This study compared the survival outcomes of different surgical approaches to determine the optimal approach for gastric cardia adenocarcinoma (GCA) and aimed to standardize the surgical treatment guidelines for GCA.

Methods: A total of 7103 patients with GCA were enrolled from our previously established gastric cardia and esophageal carcinoma databases. In our database, when the epicenter of the tumor was at or within 2 cm distally from the esophagogastric junction, the adenocarcinoma was considered to originate from the cardia and was considered a Siewert type 2 cancer.

The accuracy and influencing factors of Doppler echocardiography in estimating pulmonary artery systolic pressure: comparison with right heart catheterization: a retrospective cross-sectional study.

Background: Noninvasive assessment of pulmonary artery systolic pressure by Doppler echocardiography (sPAP) has been widely adopted to screen for pulmonary hypertension (PH), but there is still a high proportion of overestimation or underestimation of sPAP. We therefore aimed to explore the accuracy and influencing factors of sPAP with right heart catheterization (RHC) as a reference.

Methods: A total of 218 highly suspected PH patients who underwent RHC and echocardiography within 7 days were included.

Background: Gastric cardia adenocarcinoma (GCA), which has been classified as type II adenocarcinoma of the esophagogastric junction in western countries, is of similar geographic distribution with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma in China, and even referred as "sister cancer" by Chinese oncologists. The molecular mechanism for GCA is largely unknown. Recent studies have shown that decreased expression of E-cadherin is associated with the invasion and metastasis of multiple cancers.

Regional right ventricular longitudinal systolic strain for detection of severely impaired right ventricular performance in pulmonary hypertension.

Objectives: Right ventricular (RV) function is identified as a key determinant of the outcome in patients with pulmonary hypertension (PH). Several studies have assessed the role of peak global longitudinal RV strain in PH patients; however, less emphasis was given to the RV regional longitudinal strain. The aim of this study was to evaluate the regional RV systolic strain in PH patients and investigate the relationship of these parameters with the severity of PH.

Effect of cinnamon essential oil on gut microbiota in the mouse model of dextran sodium sulfate-induced colitis.

Increasing evidence has confirmed that the antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects of cinnamon essential oil (CEO) contribute to protection against inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced colitis mouse model was established to investigate the correlation between the protective effects of CEO and the regulation of intestinal microflora. The symptoms of IBD were assessed by measuring the hemoglobin content, myeloperoxidase activity, histopathological observation, cytokines, and toll-like receptor (TLR4) expression.

B-lines by lung ultrasound predict heart failure in hospitalized patients with acute anterior wall STEMI.

Objective: B-line imaging by lung ultrasound (LUS) is a new tool for evaluating subclinical pulmonary congestion. The aim of this study was to explore the prognostic value of B-line number at admission in predicting symptomatic heart failure (HF) during hospitalization in acute anterior wall STEMI patients.

Methods: This was a prospective cohort study which consecutively enrolled 96 anterior wall STEMI patients without dyspnea at admission.

The value of speckle-tracking echocardiography in identifying right heart dysfunction in patients with chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension.

Right ventricular (RV) function is a significantly important factor in the determination of the prognosis of chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) patients. Speckle-tracking echocardiography (STE) is an angle-independent new technique for quantifying myocardial deformation that is capable of providing data on multiple parameters including longitudinal and transverse information of the myocardium. In the present study, we aimed to study the advantages of STE-derived parameters in identifying RV dysfunction in CTEPH patients.

Garlicin Post-Conditioning Suppresses Adhesion Molecules in a Porcine Model of Myocardial Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury.

Objectives: To evaluate whether garlicin post-conditioning can attenuate myocardial ischemiareperfusion injury in a catheter-based porcine model of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) by affecting adhesion molecules integrin β1/CD29 and platelet endothelial cell adhesion molecule-1 (PECAM-1/CD31).

Methods: Twenty-two swine were devided into 3 groups: 6 in a sham-operation group, and 8 each in the model and garlicin groups. AMI porcine model was established in the model and garlicin groups.

P120 catenin attenuates lipopolysaccharide-induced blood-brain barrier dysfunction and inflammatory responses in human brain microvascular endothelial cells.

Increasing evidences suggest that p120 catenin (p120ctn) exerts important functions in the regulation of pro-inflammatory molecules. However, the relationship among p120ctn, inflammatory responses and blood-brain barrier (BBB) dysfunction as they are the initiator of sepsis is not unknown. In this study, we found that p120ctn expression was correlated with an increase in the permeability of BBB and a decrease in the expression of tight-junction proteins in human brain microvascular endothelial cells (HBMECs) after LPS challenge.

Multi-Cereal Beverage Fermented by Lactobacillus Helveticus and Saccharomyces Cerevisiae.

A novel multi-cereal-based fermented beverage with suitable aroma, flavor, and pH fermented by lactic acid bacteria and Saccharomyces cerevisiae was developed. Twenty-seven lactobacilli strains were screened for acid production (pH and titratable acidity) in a mixture of malt, rice, and maize substrates. It was found that Lactobacillus helveticus KLDS1.
