Introduction: Interstitial lung diseases (ILDs) include a wide variety of chronic progressive pulmonary diseases characterized by lung inflammation, fibrosis and hypoxemia and can progress to respiratory failure and even death. ILDs are associated with varying degrees of quality of life impairments in affected people. Studies on the quality of life in patients with ILDs are still limited, and there are few studies with long-term follow-up periods in these patients.

The pathogenesis of cerebral malaria is biologically complex and involves multi-factorial mechanisms such as microvascular congestion, immunopathology by the pro-inflammatory cytokine and endothelial dysfunction. Recent data have suggested that a pleiotropic T-cell immunomodulatory protein (TIP) could effectively mediate inflammatory cytokines of mammalian immune response against acute graft-versus-host disease in animal models. In this study, we identified a conserved homologue of TIP in Plasmodium berghei (PbTIP) as a membrane protein in Plasmodium asexual stage.

In order to maximize the ecological function of red soil drylands and to determine the desirable multiple cropping systems, we evaluated the productivity, circulation of materials, energy and value flows in four multiple cropping systems on the basis of a consecutive three-year field experiment. Four multiple cropping systems were designed: treatment A (CK): wheat/soybean-sesame; treatment B: mixed green manure (rape × Chinese milk vetch × radish)-soybean ‖ maize-mung bean‖ sesame; treatment C: ryegrass-peanut‖ maize-millet‖ buckwheat; and treatment D: rape-mung bean‖ sweet potato; where interplanting was expressed as '/', intercropping as '‖', planting after harvest as '-', and mixed cropping as '×'. Thirteen variables were employed to compare economic, ecological, and social benefits among the four cropping systems using grey relational analysis.

The objective of the present study was to figure out whether human IL-27-producing CD4(+) T cells represent a distinct T cell subset in tuberculosis pleural effusion (TPE). Distribution, phenotypic features of IL-27-producing CD4(+) T cells in TPE were determined. The required transcription factors and signal transductions for IL-27-producing CD4(+) T cell differentiation were explored.

Objective: Although the values of soluble mesothelin-related peptides (SMRPs), including mesothelin and megakaryocyte potentiating factor, in serum and/or pleural fluid for diagnosing malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) have been extensively studied, the exact diagnostic accuracy of these SMRPs remains controversial. The purpose of the present meta-analysis is to update the overall diagnostic accuracy of SMRPs in serum and, furthermore, to establish diagnostic accuracy of SMRPs in pleural fluid for MPM.

Design: Systematic review and meta-analysis.

Programmed death 1 (PD-1), PD-ligand 1 (PD-L1), and PD-L2 have been demonstrated to be involved in tuberculosis immunity, however, the expression and regulation of PD-1/PD-Ls pathways in pleural mesothelial cells (PMCs) and CD4(+) T cells in tuberculous pleural effusion (TPE) have not been investigated. Expression of PD-1 on CD4(+) T cells and expressions of PD-L1 and PD-L2 on PMCs in TPE were determined. The impacts of PD-1/PD-Ls pathways on proliferation, apoptosis, adhesion, and migration of CD4(+) T cells were explored.

Background: The condition of concomitant upper lobe emphysema and lower lobe fibrosis as identified by computer tomography is known as combined pulmonary fibrosis and emphysema (CPFE). CPFE has distinct clinical characteristics compared with emphysema alone (EA) and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) without emphysema. However, the pulmonary inflammation characteristics of CPFE are not well known, and the differences between CPFE and the other two diseases with regards to pulmonary inflammation need to be explored.

Rationale: According to the 2002 ATS/ERS Consensus Classification, a confident diagnosis of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) without surgical lung biopsy is made with consistent clinical/physiological findings and the typical features on high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT). Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) and/or transbronchial biopsy, one of four major criteria in the 2000 ATS/ERS IPF Statement, was no more essential in the diagnostic algorithm of 2002 ATS/ERS Consensus Classification.

Objectives: To evaluate the additional utility of BAL for the diagnosis of IPF.
