Label-free histological analysis of retrieved thrombi in acute ischemic stroke using optical diffraction tomography and deep learning.

For patients with acute ischemic stroke, histological quantification of thrombus composition provides evidence for determining appropriate treatment. However, the traditional manual segmentation of stained thrombi is laborious and inconsistent. In this study, we propose a label-free method that combines optical diffraction tomography (ODT) and deep learning (DL) to automate the histological quantification process.

Early Imaging Findings of Hypertrophic Osteoarthropathy Mimicking Bone Metastasis from Extrathoracic Malignancy.

Hypertrophic osteoarthropathy (HOA) is a syndrome characterized by digital clubbing, periosteal bone formation, and synovial effusions. Secondary HOA is associated with intrathoracic malignancy in most cases; however, in rare cases, HOA can be caused by extrathoracic conditions. We report early ultrasound, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and bone scintigraphy findings of HOA in a patient with breast cancer.

We hypothesized that minimal change disease (MCD) pathogenesis may be associated with mitochondrial injury, and that the degree of mitochondrial injury at the time of diagnosis may serve as a valuable prognostic marker. We compared urinary mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) at the time of diagnosis in patients with MCD and age- and sex-matched healthy controls (MHC) ( = 10 each). We analyzed the site and signal intensity of immunohistochemical (IHC) staining of stimulator of interferon genes (STING) using kidney tissues at the time of diagnosis in patients with MCD.

As urine is not sterile, inflammatory reactions caused by dysbiosis of the urinary microbiota may induce interstitial cystitis. A study was conducted to determine whether β-defensin 2 (BD-2), a specific antimicrobial peptide in the bladder, could be used as a novel diagnostic marker for ulcerative interstitial cystitis (IC). Urine samples from three female groups were examined: healthy controls ( = 34, Control group), non-Hunner type IC ( = 40, NHIC group), and Hunner type IC ( = 68, HIC group).

Among the subtypes of germ cell tumors, teratomas are the most frequent in the pediatric population and commonly occur in the sacrococcygeal region and the gonads. Intramuscular composite hemangioendothelioma: case report of an unusual tumor in an unusual location.

Composite hemangioendothelioma (CHE) is an extremely rare locally aggressive vascular neoplasm comprising various benign, intermediate, and malignant vascular components. It is usually located superficially, in the dermis and subcutis of the extremities. Herein, we report a first case of CHE arising from the skeletal muscle in a 67-year-old woman who presented with a palpable mass on her right forearm.

Multifocal ectopic thyroid tissues including breast: A case report.

The current study reports the case of multifocal ectopic thyroid tissues in the breast. Ectopic thyroid tissue is an uncommon entity found not only in the cysts of thyroglossal ducts, but also along the thyroglossal duct. The most frequent location of this tissue is the base of the tongue, but they can also occur in the anterior tongue, submandibular or sublingual region, larynx, trachea, mediastinum and heart.

Minor Glomerular Abnormalities are Associated with Deterioration of Long-Term Kidney Function and Mitochondrial Injury.

Minor glomerular abnormalities (MGAs) are unclassified glomerular lesions indicated by the presence of minor structural abnormalities that are insufficient for a specific pathological diagnosis. The long-term clinical outcomes and pathogenesis have not been examined. We hypothesized that MGAs would be associated with the deterioration of long-term kidney function and increased urinary mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) copy numbers.

Loss of Nuclear BAP1 Expression Is Associated with High WHO/ISUP Grade in Clear Cell Renal Cell Carcinoma.

Background: BRCA1-associated protein 1 (BAP1) mutations are frequently reported in clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC); however, very few studies have evaluated the role of these mutations in other renal cell carcinoma (RCC) subtypes. Therefore, we analyzed BAP1 protein expression using immunohistochemistry in several RCC subtypes and assessed its relationship with clinicopathological characteristics of patients.

Methods: BAP1 expression was immunohistochemically evaluated in tissue microarray blocks constructed from 371 samples of RCC collected from two medical institutions.

Gene copy number variation and protein overexpression of EGFR and HER2 in distal extrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma.

EGFR and HER2 are among the most promising therapeutic targets in solid cancers. The expression status of EGFR and HER2 are associated with the prognosis, and with a number of clinicopathological factors, in many cancers. However, few studies have examined this association in distal extrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (EHCC).

Downregulation of osteoprotegerin expression in metastatic colorectal carcinoma predicts recurrent metastasis and poor prognosis.

We recently reported the downregulation of osteoprotegerin expression in primary colorectal carcinoma and its significant association with aggressive oncogenic behavior, which suggest that this process contributes to colorectal carcinoma development and progression. In this study, we used immunohistochemical staining to evaluate osteoprotegerin expression in 81 colorectal liver metastasis tissue samples and investigated its possible association with the clinicopathological characteristics and outcomes of patients with colorectal liver metastasis. These tissues exhibited significantly reduced expression of osteoprotegerin compared to primary colorectal carcinomas and normal colorectal mucosa.

EGFR, COX2, p-AKT expression and PIK3CA mutation in distal extrahepatic bile duct carcinoma.

Distal extrahepatic bile duct (EBD) carcinoma is a rare but highly aggressive malignant neoplasm. Some in vitro studies have shown that EGFR and PI3K-Akt pathway play an important role in the carcinogenesis of bile duct carcinoma. The aim of the present study is to investigate the expression of EGFR, p-AKT, and COX-2 and the mutation of PIK3CA in distal EBD carcinoma and evaluate the association with clinicopathological factors.

Validation of T Stage According to Depth of Invasion and N Stage Subclassification Based on Number of Metastatic Lymph Nodes for Distal Extrahepatic Bile Duct (EBD) Carcinoma.

According to the current AJCC staging system, the T stage of distal extrahepatic bile duct carcinoma (EBD) is classified according to the extent of the tumor within or beyond the bile duct wall. However many invasive carcinoma accompany stromal desmoplasia that obscure lower boundary of bile duct wall; it is frequently difficult to clearly define the extent of tumors using the current T classification system. In this study, we validated an alternative T classification system by depth of invasion (DoI; T1: < 5  mm, T2: 5 to 12  mm, and T3: ≥ 12  mm).

Myxoid dermatofibroma on a great toe: a case report.

Dermatofibroma is a common benign fibrohistiocytic tumor with many clinicopathological variants. Myxoid dermatofibroma is one of these variants, which is characterized by marked stromal mucin deposition. This report presents a case of myxoid dermatofibroma on a great toe that had been slowly growing for two years.

Downregulation of GLTSCR2 expression is correlated with breast cancer progression.

Glioma tumor-suppressor candidate region gene2 (GLTSCR2) is a recently identified nucleolus-localized protein participating in the regulation of cell cycle progression and apoptosis. Down-regulation of GLTSCR2 in several types of cancers and increased transforming activity in GLTSCR2-downregulated cancer cells indicated its tumor suppressive potential. The aim of this study was to evaluate GLTSCR2 expression in breast cancer and to investigate the question of whether reduced expression of GLTSCR2 may have any pathological significance in breast cancer development or progression.

A polymorphism of interleukin-22 receptor alpha-1 is associated with the development of childhood IgA nephropathy.

Recent studies suggest that dysregulated innate immunity plays an important role in the pathogenesis of immunoglobulin A nephropathy (IgAN). The interleukin-20 subfamily and its receptor, interleukin-22 receptor alpha-1 (IL-22R1), were recently identified as immunomodulators in human diseases, acting as mediators of mucosal host defense. However, the potential role of IL-22R1 in the pathogenesis of IgAN has not been explored.
