Investigation of acetyl-CoA carboxylase-inhibiting herbicides that exhibit soybean crop selectivity.

The sustainable control of weed populations, particularly resistant species, is a significant challenge in agriculture around the world. The α-aryl-keto-enol (aryl-KTE) class of acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACCase)-inhibiting herbicides represent a possible solution for the control of resistant grasses even though achieving crop selectivity remains a challenge. Herein, we present some of our investigations into identifying the most promising structural features within the aryl-KTE class that give the highest chance of achieving soybean crop selectivity, whilst also maintaining strong and broad efficacy against problematic weed species.

Influence of Surface Flows on the Shape of Fractal Domains.

Tidal breathing is associated with a 30% change of the surfactant-covered alveolar surface occurring about 16 times per minute. To model this highly dynamic process, erucic acid monolayers at the air-water interface were compressed fast. Brewster angle microscopy imaged the fractal liquid-condensed (LC) domains and quantified the surface flow in size, direction, and duration.

Predicting Actual Social Skill Expression from Personality and Skill Self-Concepts.

However, the way in which they are typically assessed via self-report questionnaires has one potential downside; self-reports assess individuals' global self-concepts, which do not necessarily reflect individuals' actual social behaviors. In this research, we aimed to investigate how self-concepts assessed via questionnaires relate to skill expression assessed via behavioral observations after short interpersonal simulations.

Evaluation of a novel classification system to predict local recurrence in sarcoma patients undergoing hemipelvectomy with iliosacral resection.

Aims: Iliosacral sarcoma resections have been shown to have high rates of local recurrence (LR) and poor overall survival. There is also no universal classification for the resection of pelvic sarcomas invading the sacrum. This study proposes a novel classification system and analyzes the survival and risk of recurrence, when using this system.

The Bateman-Type Soft Tissue Reconstruction around Proximal or Total Humeral Megaprostheses in Patients with Primary Malignant Bone Tumors-Functional Outcome and Endoprosthetic Complications.

We aimed to evaluate the functional outcome and endoprosthetic complications following the Bateman-type soft tissue reconstruction around proximal or total humeral replacements in patients undergoing resection of a primary malignant bone tumor. Between September 2001 and December 2018, a total of 102 patients underwent resection of a primary malignant bone tumor and subsequent reconstruction with a modular humeral megaprosthesis in our department. Fifteen (15%) of these patients underwent a Bateman-type soft tissue reconstruction and were included in this retrospective study.

Melorheostosis of the Fossa Intercondylaris Femoris - A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Introduction: Melorheostosis is a rare benign bone condition characterized by excessive segmental sclerosis of cortical bone being reminiscent of dripping candle wax. It typically affects the long bones and can cause impingement and nerve compression syndromes that may require surgical treatment.

Case Report: We report the case of a 49-year-old male patient with a 12-month history of the left-sided knee pain and a concomitant limitation of his left knee flexion to 90 degree.

Complex Bone Tumors of the Trunk-The Role of 3D Printing and Navigation in Tumor Orthopedics: A Case Series and Review of the Literature.

The combination of 3D printing and navigation promises improvements in surgical procedures and outcomes for complex bone tumor resection of the trunk, but its features have rarely been described in the literature. Five patients with trunk tumors were surgically treated in our institution using a combination of 3D printing and navigation. The main process includes segmentation, virtual modeling and build preparation, as well as quality assessment.

Good to excellent long-term survival of a single-design condylar constrained knee arthroplasty for primary and revision surgery.

Purpose: The purpose of the study was to determine the long-term survivorship, functional outcomes of a single-design condylar constrained (CCK) TKA in primary and revision cases as well as to assess specific risk factors for failure. It was hypothesized that primary CCK TKA had a better survival than revision knees.

Methods: One hundred and forty three patients who underwent revision TKA (n = 119) or complex primary TKA (n = 24) using a single-design condylar constrained knee system (Genesis CCK, Smith & Nephew) performed at a single institution between 1999 and 2008 were retrospectively included.

Single Myofiber Culture Assay for the Assessment of Adult Muscle Stem Cell Functionality Ex Vivo.

Adult skeletal muscle tissue harbors a stem cell population that is indispensable for its ability to regenerate. Upon muscle damage, muscle stem cells leave their quiescent state and activate the myogenic program ultimately leading to the repair of damaged tissue concomitant with the replenishment of the muscle stem cell pool. Various factors influence muscle stem cell activity, among them intrinsic stimuli but also signals from the direct muscle stem cell environment, the stem cell niche.

The isolation and cultivation of intact, single myofibers presents a superior approach for studying myogenic cells in their native position. The cells' characteristics remain more similar to muscle tissue than in cell culture. Nevertheless, no routinely used method in higher vertebrates exists.

Skeletal muscle aging - Stem cells in the spotlight.

Aging is characterized by a progressive decline in tissue and organ function often linked to a reduced stem cell functionality, a cell population important for regeneration. Skeletal muscle mass and regenerative capacity decrease with advancing age. Muscle stem cells, also termed satellite cells, are a prerequisite for regeneration of skeletal muscle.

Skeletal muscle possesses an enormous capacity to regenerate after injury. This process is mainly driven by muscle stem cells, also termed satellite cells.
