LIM and Src homology 3 (SH3) protein 2 (LASP2) is a small focal adhesion protein first identified as a splice variant of the nebulette gene (Nebl). As the newest member of the nebulin protein family, the regulation and function of LASP2 remain largely unknown. Our previous RNA-sequencing results identified Nebl as one of the most highly induced genes in the mouse liver in response to the activation of pregnane X receptor (PXR).

Non-tuberculosis mycobacteria (NTM) can cause severe respiratory infection in patients with underlying pulmonary conditions, and these infections are extremely difficult to treat. In this report, we evaluate a nitric oxide (NO)-releasing prodrug [methyl tris diazeniumdiolate (MD3)] against a panel of NTM clinical isolates and as a treatment for acute and chronic NTM infections . Its efficacy in inhibiting growth or killing mycobacteria was explored alongside evaluation of the impact to primary human airway epithelial tissue.

Article Synopsis
  • A study compared two methods for repairing incisional ventral hernias: laparoscopic repair with intraperitoneal mesh (LG) versus a hybrid approach that includes open closure of the fascial defect (HG).
  • Out of 193 patients, 65 in the LG group and 60 in the HG group were followed up after 5-10 years, revealing similar hernia recurrence rates of around 16.9% for LG and 16.7% for HG.
  • The long-term quality of life and pain levels reported by patients in both groups were comparable, indicating that adding fascial closure did not significantly impact outcomes despite existing recommendations.

Article Synopsis
  • Childhood brain tumor survivors show significant signs of lumbar disc degeneration on MRI compared to age and sex-matched controls, indicating a higher risk of spine issues due to treatment.
  • The study found higher Pfirrmann grades, more lumbar disc protrusions and extrusions, and a greater number of high-intensity zone lesions in the survivor group.
  • Age at diagnosis and blood pressure were linked to the extent of intervertebral disc degeneration, with those diagnosed later in childhood experiencing less degeneration.

Aims: The aim of this study was to evaluate whether, after correction of an adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS), leaving out the subfascial drain gives results that are no worse than using a drain in terms of total blood loss, drop in haemoglobin level, and opioid consumption.

Methods: Adolescents (aged between 10 and 21 years) with an idiopathic scoliosis (major curve ≥ 45°) were eligible for inclusion in this randomized controlled noninferiority trial (n = 125). A total of 90 adolescents who had undergone segmental pedicle screw instrumentation were randomized into no-drain or drain groups at the time of wound closure using the sealed envelope technique (1:1).
