Naloxone is available to the public and can be administered through intramuscular (IM), intravenous (IV), and intranasal spray (IN) routes. Our literature review investigates the adequacy of two doses of standard IM or IN naloxone in reversing fentanyl overdoses compared to newer high-dose naloxone formulations.

Outcomes of sacral neuromodulation for chronic pelvic pain: a Finnish national multicenter study.

Background: The aim of this study was to report the outcomes of sacral neuromodulation (SNM) in chronic pelvic pain (CPP) patients in the Finnish national cohort.

Methods: This was a register-based retrospective study, involving all the centers that provide SNM treatment in Finland. The data of all patients treated with SNM for CPP were gathered from Oulu-, Turku-, Tampere- and Helsinki University Hospitals, as well as Jyväskylä and Seinäjoki Central Hospitals.

Implementing and assessing a service to demonstrate public impact of faculty research in news and policy sources.

Background: As the need to demonstrate research impact increases, faculty are looking for new ways to show funders, departments, and institutions that their work is making a difference. While traditional metrics such as citation counts can tell one part of this story, these metrics are focused on the academic sphere and often miss the wide-ranging public impact that research can have in areas such as the news or policy documents.

Case Presentation: This case report describes how one library piloted and established the Policy & News Media Impact Service, where librarians generate reports for faculty members of the University of Minnesota Academic Health Center that tracks citations of their research in governmental and organizational policies as well as local, national, and international news media.

Contamination by Norovirus and Adenovirus on Environmental Surfaces and in Hands of Conscripts in Two Finnish Garrisons.

This study investigated the presence of norovirus and adenovirus, especially enteric adenovirus, on the environmental surfaces (n = 481) and military conscripts' hands (n = 109) in two Finnish garrisons (A and B) in 2013 and 2014. A questionnaire study was conducted to reveal possible correlations between viral findings on the conscripts' hands and their acute gastroenteritis symptoms. In addition to the swab samples, 14 fecal samples were obtained for viral analysis.

Correlation of sonographic features of invasive ductal mammary carcinoma with age, tumor grade, and hormone-receptor status.

Purpose: To determine whether presenting sonographic features of invasive ductal carcinomas (IDC) are associated with patient age, tumor histologic grade, and hormonal receptor status.

Methods: Sonographic features of 101 consecutive cases of IDC seen at ultrasound were retrospectively assessed based on the BI-RADS criteria of posterior acoustic appearance, tumor margins, and echogenicity. Associations between sonographic features and tumor characteristics were statistically evaluated with attention to patient age.

Outbreak of 2009 pandemic influenza A(H1N1) in a Finnish garrison--a serological survey.

In September 2009, an outbreak of 2009 pandemic influenza A(H1N1) took place in a Finnish garrison. In November 2009, we performed a serological survey among 984 recruits undergoing their military service at the garrison and related the results to self-reported upper respiratory tract infection (URTI) with or without fever. Of 346 volunteers who donated a blood sample, 169 (49%) had pandemic influenza A(H1N1) virus-specific antibodies.

Fabrication and characterization of bio-engineered cardiac pseudo tissues.

We report on fabricating functional three-dimensional (3D) tissue constructs using an inkjet based bio-prototyping method. With the use of modified inkjet printers, contractile cardiac hybrids that exhibit the forms of the 3D rectangular sheet and even the 'half heart' (with two connected ventricles) have been fabricated by arranging alternate layers of biocompatible alginate hydrogels and mammalian cardiac cells according to pre-designed 3D patterns. In this study, primary feline adult and H1 cardiomyocytes were used as model cardiac cells.

Does the implementation of a clinical information system decrease the time intensive care nurses spend on documentation of care?

Background: The number of intensive care units (ICU) using a clinical information system (CIS) is increasing. It is believed that replacing manual charting with an automatic documentation system allocates nurses more time for patient care. The objective of this study was to measure changes in nurses' working time utilization after the implementation of a CIS in a polyvalent ICU of a large Finnish central hospital.

Breaking the connection: caspase 6 disconnects intermediate filament-binding domain of periplakin from its actin-binding N-terminal region.

Periplakin is a member of the plakin family of cytolinkers that connect cytoskeletal networks to each other as well as to the cell junctional complexes. Here, we demonstrate a direct molecular interaction between actin and periplakin. Furthermore, the oligomerization state of periplakin was shown to determine specificity of its binding to intermediate filaments (IF) in vitro.

Ketoprofen for postoperative pain after uvulopalatopharyngoplasty and tonsillectomy: two-week follow-up study.

Objective: In our previous study, we reported that both uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) and tonsillectomy are associated with unacceptable intense pain during the first 24 hours after surgery. To investigate the pain progression at home, we followed the same 53 patients for 14 days after surgery. Twenty-two patients underwent tonsillectomy and 31 patients underwent UPPP.

Geographical differences in the prevalence of hypospadias in Finland.

Hypospadias is one of the most common congenital anomalies but the etiology is not fully understood. There seem to be genetic, endocrinological, and environmental factors involved. Great geographical variation in the prevalence of hypospadias has been reported both between and within countries.

Pain intensity after laseruvulopalatoplasty and tonsillectomy.

Objective: The first objective of this study was to evaluate pain intensity and opioid consumption during the first 24 hours after uvulopalatoplasty and tonsillectomy in the hospital, and the second was to evaluate pain intensity and its progression during the first 2 weeks after surgery at home.

Study Design And Settings: In a prospective parallel group study, 51 patients with uvulopalatoplasty or tonsillectomy were studied. Ketoprofen, a nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drug, and fentanyl citrate, an opioid, were used as analgesics.

Canine distemper of vaccine origin in European mink, Mustela lutreola--a case report.

Cases of canine distemper (CD) related to vaccination of exotic carnivores extend over three decades and have been described in at least nine different species. Our report describes a case of acute CD in a European mink, Mustela lutreola, vaccinated with live attenuated CD vaccine licensed for use in fur-farmed mink. The male mink died of an acute grey matter disease with an unusually long incubation period.

Single cell CGH analysis reveals a high degree of mosaicism in human embryos from patients with balanced structural chromosome aberrations.

We have performed comparative genomic hybridization (CGH) analysis of single blastomeres from human preimplantation embryos of patients undergoing preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) for inherited structural chromosome aberrations and from embryos of IVF couples without known chromosomal aberrations. The aim was to verify the PGD results for the specific translocation, reveal the overall genetic balance in each cell and visualize the degree of mosaicism regarding all the chromosomes within the embryo. We successfully analysed 94 blastomeres from 28 human embryos generated from 13 couples.

Tissue distribution and cell type-specific expression of p120ctn isoforms.

Cadherin-based molecular complexes play a major role in cell-cell adhesion. At the adherens junctions the intracellular domain of cadherins specifically interacts with beta-catenin and p120ctn, members of the Armadillo repeat protein family. Differential splicing and utilization of the alternative translation initiation codons lead to many p120ctn isoforms.

Y-chromosomal microdeletions among infertile Finnish men.

Background: Microdeletions in the Y-chromosome are known to cause a significant proportion of azoo- and oligozoospermia in men. The reported frequency of deletions varies greatly between the studies. Probable reasons for this variation are different selection criteria and number of patients included, and possibly also methodological aspects, whereas the contribution of environmental and genetic factors is not known.
